Then as an Irishman....you need to broaden your horizons, because there are better irish whiskey's out there then Jameson's. Bushmills 21 is a great irish whiskey. Midleton is right up there as well. (The first being a single malt and the latter a blend)
When out and on the whiskey, the Irish drink almost exclusively Jameson's whiskey. Last summer I drove up north on holiday, and was still up there at the beginning of the marching season. I stopped off at the Bushmills distillery to pick up a few bottles, and it was in the middle of a protestant town, which means it was plastered in red and white flags, and was dishing out attitude to drivers of southern plated cars via the local meatheads. I'm a recent 'blow-in' down south so don't know the full story, but I guess that might be something to do with the Irish and their Jameson's.

jamesons is one of the whiskys you can actually mix with. Mainly because its so bad from the start, that you cant in no way ruin it more than it was. Other whiskys you can use for, like, lets say painting thinners are american bourbuns, like Jim Beam, Four Roses and Jack Daniels..

Ive never been able to get my palette to agree with whiskey, even a proper expensive one.
I make vodka my tool of destruction which has always left me curious as to whether or not i could enjoy an uncasked whiskey, perhaps some of the japanese ones ? Can anyone of you masters of the scotch tell me if a young uncasked whiskey would go down well with a vodka drinker ?

Originally by: Zeba I used to drink whiskey up until just a few months ago. Then I discovered fine imported vodka and am currently enjoying a nice bottle of Keter One for mixing though Chopin is another favorite when I want to do shots with its smokey flavor. Haven't looked back.
I heard the crap we get here in the UK doesn't compare to real vodka. c/d? I probably should try filandia or something, but not a real fan of vodka anyway.

Whiskey, ah, whiskey... how could I possibly describe the experience of drinking whiskey.
Imagine yourself in the wind-whipped deserts of 19th century Egypt. Your servants have un-earthed the tip of an ancient tomb. As they scrabble to dig bare-handed to expose more of the sand sunken monolith, you cannot help but stand back and watch in awe. Truly, you have witnessed the rediscovery of something ancient, something forgotten. As the servants clear away the sand from the tomb entrance, you prepare to step into the unknown.
As you venture chamber through chamber, you behold wonderful treasures. Relics of empires long forgotten, architectural plans for structures which haven't been built in two millenia. Finally you arrive at the master chamber, where the great golden sarcophagus of the pharaoh has slept for aeons. You carefully lift the bejeweled, ornate burial lid, and cast your eyes upon the dessicated, shrunken form of an ancient king. The mummy gazes back at you with hollow eyesockets.
And then you jam your tongue in that ancient mummy's butthole.
That's pretty much what whiskey tastes like.

I actually know bugger all about whiskey/whisky, but I too would like to look like I'm not a basement dwelling sub-human living on scotch eggs and fizzy pop.
Could you guys please point me towards whichever site it is you've been getting all the nice names of drinks you've never tried from.
If it's any help I'm quite prepared to pretend to be an outraged Irish Whiskey/Whisky (never sure which one to use here) drinker disagreeing with the Scotch fans.
Incidentally, next time you guys are going to ressurect this already done to death pose thread, can you please let me know in advance so I can do my research and look like I can handle my drink too. TYVM.
In before the obligitory "I'm a real man and smoke cigars" thread.

Nice try, but hopelessly wide of the mark as I'm in my early 40s and have spent quite a considerable amount of time enjoying the effects of alcohol without feeling the need to be a pretentious snob about it.
You're also missing the entire point and acting just like the pseudo-connoisseur twunts already all over this thread. I'd lay odds that very few of them could tell the difference between good single malt and blended cheap crap for the masses in a blind taste test, let alone have a pallette trained enough to differentiate between any of the names they are flinging about with such gay abandon.
This is the EVE equivalent of schoolboy sexual boasting, and about as believeable.
I'm still not impressed.

Certainly. When it comes to researching which whisky to buy I rely heavily on sites like For Peat' Sake and Connosr. Most of the time I read up on a particular whisky after trying it or have sort of made up my mind about buying it (sometimes it discourages me, sometimes not).
Try to understand... Getting all religious about (a) whisky is pretty fun in itself and seeing the reactions of the non-believers is even better. Few things are better than enjoying a particularly smoky whisky while someone goes "HOW THE HELL CAN YOU DRINK THAT?!".
Does that make me a snob? Yes, I suppose it does... But it's all in good fun, and it doesn't mean we think less of others. (well, maybe a little) If you find yourself on the receiving end of such mockery, just ignore us for the trolls we are and let us drink our drain cleaner in peace.
I started this post with the intention of defending my position, but I realise that I'm not getting anywhere. Regardless of that, start researching! By the time the next whisky thread comes up I expect you to out-snob me, or at least give it a fair shot. Remember, I'm very faithful to scotch, which makes me very ignorant about the other types. Use that to your advantage.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have alcohol that needs drinking. Ta!

You gotta try it at least once. It is unbelievably smooth and aromatic.
The Macallan isn't quite in the same price range though, and it's a far more powerful flavour. Dont get me wrong; it's smooth and delicious, but in a far more assertive way than the Blue. There's also something about it that goes straight to my head in a way that other whiskies dont. Frankly, it ruins me. It's not that expensive for me, because one glass is all I need.
Okay, maybe 2

Not at all. I have quite a few affectations of my own; long hair (what's left of it), a beard you could hide several rats in, a large fast motorcycle (mostly stock I'm afraid) and a tendancy to wear shades even when the light level doesn't merit it. I whole-heartedly understand the need some folk (including myself on occasion) have to draw attention to themselves. (Vrmmm...b.b..b.bbrmmm... prop, prop, prop, prop).
It's just that there are different ways of doing it.
Personally I've seen very few custom cars that I'd describe as "hot", but then I do live in the chav-infested UK where hot custom equates to old Corsa/Saxo with knackered suspension, a wheel arch kit, an improbably wide exhaust on a standard system and tin foil taped to the interior of the rear windows. Granted many of the "babes" in the passenger seats (when the gaffa tape isn't tight enough to prevent escape) are "hotter" than the cars themselves, but that's not exactly difficult is it now? Thora Hird is hotter than half the "custom" cars I've seen floating about my poor benighted country.
I like what I like and it isn't for me to tell anyone else what to like, or how to use it... however much of a twunt they look.
I just have a sneaking suspicion that most (please note, not all) of the posers posting in this thread have never tried anything stronger than lager top and wouldn't know quality whiskey/whisky if it bit them on the arse. I've tried "decent" whiskey/whisky and I'm afraid it's just not a taste that I've been able to accquire; it all tastes like drokking paraffin to me.
Of course, I could be wrong. It might be that EVE just happens to be the default choice of internet spaceship game for whiskey/whisky snobs everywhere... but somehow I doubt it.
Jealousy? Yup, guilty as charged (sometimes) but aren't most of us? Possibly you yourself are without aspirations of any kind and don't suffer from it? Or perhaps you have found your inner child, made friends with your demons or (insert new-age cosmological, psuedo-hippy BS here) and are above such petty emotions. Maybe... maybe not.
(I'm thinking not as you've actually bothered to have a go at internet forums.)
However, one thing I'm certainly not jealous of are sad acts pretending to be cool on t3h interwebs. I could have joined in the alcohol related circle-jerk that this thread has become, but I felt that the more appropriate response is derision and disbelief.
I also tend to have a tendancy to be very vocal about expressing rage; there's no "silently" about it I'm afraid. Go on; have another go. Three tries for a pound.
Get well soon.

JW blue guys...REALLY?
Not saying it's a BAD scotch...but if you wanna drop that kind of coin on a scotch...it shouldn't be a blend. Hell...go with Mac 25 in that case.
I would like to know if anyone has tried the King George V variant of the blue. I still wouldn't be able to justify the price...but would just like to know what the flavor profile is.

haha I love this reation, especially from the girls who I hang out with. Guys my recoil a bit but will try to act like its not so bad, girls tend to make a big deal out of it.
I enjoy the smell and taste of whiskey. Hate tequila and triple-sec. Vodka meh. Gin and Rum are good.
I know nothing really about whiskies compared you most the guys here, but as a student I can drink whiskey and be a snob amongst young 'uns.

As I sell wine, whiskey, vodka and gin for a living (and thankfully i've gotten to taste all of them - 280+ wines and over 50 spirits in all) I feel I can throw my hat into the ring for this thread.
Makers Mark and Woodford are bourbans and therefore not real whiskeys at all but very nice non the less. But they lack the ooomph, aroma and taste of the real thing. History tells us that Irish whiskeys' are the original however, Jamesons Irish Whiskey is vastly over-rated while Bushmills is sublime to say the least. Jamesons Redbrest is pretty good and Connemara Single Malt is just damned fine. IMHO the best scotch comes from the Islays. Juna is very very nice ('Superstition' being my favourite). Im quite partial to Oban and always have bottles of both Juna and Oban in the house. Ardbeg is too coffee/chocolatey for me. Talisker is good but not great (cos its quite peppery) while Laphroaig is just plain great. Aberlour A'bunadh is a great after-dinner whiskey because, as its matured in sherry casks, it retains the sherry aromas (just like Laphroaig). Caol Ila has a greenish tinge and is famous for its slighlty peaty/seaweedy flavours but its not for me. Glenlivit, Glenmorangie, Glenfiddich, Glenkinchie, Royal Lochnagar et al are all good highland whiskeys but lack the subtle aromas and flavours of the Islays. However, in saying that, the Royal Lochnagar Select Reserve Highland Malt Whisky will probably be the best whiskey you could drink for your 21st. At around ú130 a bottle its worth every penny.
In brief - find a good Islay Single Malt and stick with it as your everyday whiskey but for that very special occasion, get something very special. For me, it has to be the Royal Lochnagar Select Reserve.
ps: happy birthday

I'm feeling oddly left out every time one of these discussions pop up. I just can't pick a side in the whisky/whiskey debate. Ireland or Scotland, they've both produced some stellar stuff. I direct my rage towards bourbons instead, that just doesn't do it for me. they always seem... somehow synthetic.
As for personal favorites, they both happen to land on the scottish side of the fence. For single malts, I'm a big fan of Highland Park. For blended, I go with Chivas Regal. None of these are the best of their kind I've ever tasted, but they're at a reasonable price point for the quality.

I've never really been much of a whisky fan - I've never yet found one that agrees with me.
Every other year or so I'll take the notion to have a wee dram and each and every time I find it makes me wretch.
I tried a nice Talisker once, but that's about it.
