For a while now i have had a problem with eve whereby it loads the splash screen and then nothing happens. This seems to be somewhat tempermental as sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt.
Does anyone else have this problem? Has anyone managed to fix this problem?
I have had this issue since wine 1.1.35 or so, since i upgraded to Kubuntu 9.10
Any help will be much appreciated, thanks

~/.wine/drive_c/windows/profiles/username/Local Settings/Application data/CCP/EVE/settings/prefs.ini
set the bitsCancelled=1 to bitsCancelled=0 and remove write permission from the file.
sudo chmod ugo-w prefs.ini
should fix it

Before firing up the eve client, also try disabling networking until the login screen loads. Then reenable it.

I always had to hit patch notes after doing it. It was wierd. I've resorted to changed the bits cancelled thingy to 0 via sh scripts.
sed -i -e '/bitsCan/ s/1/0/' /home/yourname/.wine/dosdevices/c:/users/george/Local*Settings/Application*Data/CCP/EVE/c_program_files_ccp_eve_tranquility/settings/prefs.ini && padsp wine explorer /desktop=Eve1,1680x1000 "C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE\eve.exe" -j5
Change yourname too, well your name. lol
And for each sh script change the Eve1 to something different.

Yeah, I had this problem on Mint (Ubuntu), but not on Arch (I read somewhere that there is some issue with the Ubuntu kernel). Basically, what everyone says above is correct. Also, I might add -- it helped if I ran Eve in an emualted virtual terminal in Wine (it is an option in the winecfg menu.) Otherwise, just disconnect from your network, then start Eve. If your client won't connect, you have to click on the "patch notes" or "news" as was said above.
Let's see if that works...
