lets nostalgia about what eve was like when you joined, sometime I miss the old ways things were but for the most part eve has improved a lot since then
when I joined in 2006 it was just after red moon rising, tech 2 ships were new, and capitals, pos warfare and moon mining had just been introduced
> hurricane, harbinger, drake, myrmidon, abaddon, rokh, maelstrom and hyperion did not exist
> there was no overloading, and modules has a solid green background
> the UI was static, it was not adjustable, the overview was on the left and the drone and fleet windows underneath it, the centre display of the UI could not be moved about and everything often overlapped but it was still fine
> the Eos and Vagabond were the most feared ships, and they were about 250 mil
> there have been multiple HP boosts since, and battlecruisers had about 2k or 3k armour, you could nearly rep all the shields on a cyclone in one burst
> t3 ships, electronic attack ships, black ops, marauders and heavy interdictors did not exist
> no titan had been built, only a handful of motherships were in service, it would be 7 or 8 months before the first titan was to be built, piloted by cyvok of ASCN
> active tanking was the way to go, dual rep megathrons were fearsome
> there was no faction warfare, low sec around amamake and egghelende were death traps
> the stabber was a very popular ship, lots of people flew them in pvp
> nosferatu would drain cap like a neut does now, nos domi and nos cyclone were super powerful ships
> warp core stabs didnt mess up your scan res and range, a vagabond was often fit with 2 warp core stabs
> the scanner had a little map on it with a display of the system you were in, like the minimap when you press F11 has now, except it was built into the scanner
> the scanner could spot NPC's in belts, I remember roaming low sec scanning out faction spawns in a stabber
> webs had 90% strength, if you got webbed there was not much chance of getting away unless you webbed back MWD'd like a nutter, MWD's couldnt be shut down
> the zealot had 4 guns, the eagle had 4 guns, the sacrilege, damnation and malediction were laser boats
> nanophoon's were everywhere, bumping was everywhere, you could bump anything off a station with a nanophoon, you could fly it like a vagabond with torps and nos, vagabonds could hit 8,000 or 9,000 m/s if you spent the money on them
> and most importantly, the cyno effect was an awesome cone tunnel of lightning that made the screen shake

The main thing I remember when I started playing was that there was no warp to zero, that sucked and made traveling multiple systems a pain. Many people had bookmarks along their frequent traveled routes so they could land on or close to gates.
Eve was much harder back then but that is what made me subscribe.

There was 9k people on peak nights
Lag was unbearable
Players could steal any and everything,no flagging
CNR was a rare sight as did all navy ships for that matter
No skill queuing,as a nOOb,the alarm clock skill switch was the norm
I was willingly mining

I joined in 2004, things I remember
- Zombies being banned for tanking concord on the gate at Yulai while pew pewing noobies (I managed to get away) - slow boating to everywhere where you didn't have bm's at the gates (eve universe felt very big back then) - No T2 - Seeing a battleship was quite a big deal and wondering how you'd ever afford one even bigger - Tank CEO being one of the most respected PvP'ers (still around I see) - Travel hubs, like Pator, which were forever crashing and people getting stuck in the system, or undocking - CCP putting up a message on the Sunday night when we broke 10000 concurrently logged in users - ravens kicking ass in PVP (not like now) - Cruisers that could fire Torpedoes and they would decimate any PVE rat - The cruise missile skill being rank 6 and training it to level 5 only to see them getting nerfed a patch later - m00 being the bad ass pirate corp (they even still around?) - CCP Kieran - sensor dampeners with infinite range - and much much more...

Edited by: Melor Rend on 07/04/2010 14:54:00 Torps (and missiles in general) hitting all targets (no matter how small) for full damage.... *wipes mouth on his sleeve*
Or when fielding more then 30 people was considered blobbing (though I believe we didn't actually call it that back then).
Ahh... the good old times.
Edit: a further great one was also:
tutorial agents that sent noobs to lowsec for their first mission... rofl. And then being insta-wtf-bbq'ed by a full-rack-of-heatsinks geddon on the gate. Epic.

started in dec 06
many of the things gneez said but some other fun things like undockign from jita and waiting for privateers to pop someone and ninja'ing the t2 mods and making good money for a noob.
myrmidon and eos were usefull ships salvaging and loot/can baiting in the tutorial complex ( first nooby pvp experience and hatemail) salvage was very profitable (tripped circuits i think were 140k each)

Originally by: Polaris Lumine - ravens kicking ass in PVP (not like now) - m00 being the bad ass pirate corp (they even still around?)
Ravens still kick ass in pvp, just not solo.
Also last time I checked most of the m0o guys had run off to play potbs, the only member of that corp I've spoken to in ages buys and sells so many characters I don't even know who his current character is >_>
As for the topic at hand:
I started playing back in 06, literally a month before they started giving people 800k SP at startup (and we had no increased skill training time, so I had about 800k SP when they made the change...was not happy about that )
Tier 2 BCs and tier 3 BSs wouldn't be coming out for another few months, no one had any titans yet (least I don't think so, ASCN may have pumped theirs out already) and there was no wtz. But, I think the most important thing that I miss more than anything else: They had snowballs that didn't melt a week after christmas. Within my first month of playing I had roughly 70mil to my name, after I discovered snowballs I literally spent 50mil of it on the buggers, they were so much fun :D |

Red moon Rising nub here!
Cap ships could use acceleration gates I remember tagging along as a looter behind a Thanatos doing lvl 4 missions.
Cap ships could be built in Hi sec and jumped to lo/null sec.
tractor beams had just been introduced but salvager's and wrecks didn't exist.
Rats used Mwd in Deadspace, having 3 or 4 Machariels bearing down on my low skilled Domi was scary

This. Using a shuttle to make bookmarks 15k behind a gate for that 20 jump trade route.

back when I first played the game at release, before quitting in 2004:
No Sentry Guns in low-sec When you jumped through a gate you didn't appear on the other side, but at a moon Armour Tanking didn't exist Basic Insurance didn't exist Insurance lasted 5 days only BS Rats didn't exist L4 Missions didn't exist Battlecruisers didn't exist Destroyers didn't exist Mining Barges didn't exist No Stacking Penalties Only 'safe' ways to get ISK were hi-sec mining, industry and trading Battleships were a rare sight
Came back in 2006, pretty much Gneez' list there

a few others I could think of
> warp disruptors didnt come in t2, only t1 and no overloading, so 20km warp disruption range was the hard limit, except for arazu/lach
> torpedoes went nearly as far as cruise, but they were very slow, and did a bit extra damage
> multispecs on everything, multispec caracal's and domi's were common, dominix would often combine warp core stabs, nos and multispecs to be an unstobble lol-machine
> gangs had no structure, whoever gave out the best relevant bonus's to a gang just gave them as soon as they joined, there was no need for rank 8 and rank 12 leadership skills
> learning skill had to be at lvl 5 to train the tier 2 learning skills
> there were no scripts, remote damps were very powerful, but ECM was even worse (its gone through 2 or 3 nerfs since then)
> people flew the deimos, it was respected as a blaster ship, now nobody flies it really
> the hurricane was nearly released with 7 turrets and the harbinger with 8, but a lot of forum complaints caused them to be pre-nerfed a little (they are still great ships though obviously)
> nobody used afterburners, nobody used warp scramblers
> the arbitrator could field 75m3 of drones, tracking disruptors didnt have scripts
> covert ops ships had the old models (vigil with a big sensor dish on the front for the cheetah) and looked a lot better
> the nightmare was a 4 turret 4 launcher ship like the typhoon, and it was an armour tanker with 7 lows, it fitted 4 lasers and 4 torps, and rich people would fly them like nano-phoons with nos and torps
> machariel twice the size of a chimera, chimera was smaller than an armageddon |

Heh...I remember beta and not liking the game very much. I was more interested in another game I was playing at the time and really didn't want to spent what little free time I had split between the two...so EVE lost (at first). Later, more of my friends left the one game for EVE and I ended up following. I just started a new character at that time (which I have since sold, much to my daily regret).
Things I remember from rejoining the game not long after EVE went live...
Alliances before there was a game mechanic for them. Fountain Alliance, Curse Alliance, Stain Alliance...just to name a very few.
The Great Northern War.
Old-school gankageddons with lows filled with heat sinks that didn't suffer stacking penalties.
Pre-RMR missiles. I've fired very few torps and even fewer cruise missiles since the RMR patch...heheh. I haven't owned a Raven since the patch.
Yulai was the trade hub. Jita was busy, but I remember Yulai as being the main trade hub.
Frequent in-game faction "events" and the ability to interact with CCP representiatives acting on behalf of the various factions. I think these things still happen but it seems very rare.
The very first Alliance Tournament and what a thing of wonder it was.
"Bookmarking" everything for travel. Gates...stations...belts.
Scanning all of Fountain Region's moons when moon-mining hit the game. I was in FA at the time.
The Apocalypse was the mining ship. Highs filled with Miner IIs. High-sec belts were always filled with mining Apocs and anchored Giant Secure Containers.
Old style officer spawns in 0.0 that could actually kill you and were fairly hard to solo and making about a billion and a half isk off of the drop the first time I got Cormack Vaaja. That was a lot by the standards of the time. I almost had to warp out a few times because my tank was breaking. These days, tanking Serpentis is laughable.
Mining for a building my first Raven. Flying it into battle against a trio of the aforementioned old-style Gankageddons and watching it melt in seconds. Haven't really mind much since then except for a few corp/alliance ice mining ops.
Getting a note from one of my Research Agents that I had been awarded a Covert Ops Cloak II BPO...a DAY after my offer expired. I was out of town on vacation with no i-net access. Back then, these things were a pittance to build and selling for very large sums. I was sick to my stomach...and still feel a twinge every time I think about it.
There were no battlecruisers or destroyers in the game. T2 ships were rare. Battleships were pretty much king. The artillery Tempest was ascendant. Stradivarious/Polaran sitting hundreds of KM off a gate insta-popping things was a thing of beauty.
Burn Eden visiting Fountain and making us look very bad.
I'll add more as and if I think of them.

I recall having a Thorax was the best thing ever, and was mining in it, with 8 heavy drones as defence :)
I recall being able to fit 2 mwd's to a battleship and go so fast it was unreal!
A very early memory too was playing on Sunday and a pop up saying "omfg we hit 5600 people online!"

- You needed lv 4 science to use a tractor beam. - Tech 2 cost an arm and a leg to buy. - no warp to zero. you had to make bookmarks 15KM ahead of your gate and warp to your bookmark at 15KM. - Ice belts in empire were still spawning. - no contracts. it was called escrow. - mission agents were in Trade hubs (Jita)
And much much more.

when you could equipped and activate multiple MWDs. a Scorpion could MWD faster than warp speed for a few seconds.
When 0.0 spawns were actually hard. If you didn't kill them fast enough, more and more would spawn on top of you. Eventually you'd have a dozen BS and 20 frigs/cruisers shooting your ass.
Dreads/carriers barely had more HP than a BS, and a minmatar deathstar's artillery could insta pop them if several guns fired on the same target. . Domis/vexors could field 15 drones. All other ships could field 10.
Cruise missile Kestral was king of PvP.
0.0 was safer than highsec, because it was so empty you'd rarely run into anyone, and there were only 2-3 stations per region.
Sniping BS could insta lock your pod and pop you (no scrips)
There were no rigs or rig slots.
You had to stagger your missiles because if you fired them too close together they would blow each other up and not do damage.
Missiles had LoS and would hit the first thing in its path, regardless if you were targeting it or not.
All gun ammo did the same damage, So there was no reason not to use the longest ranged ammo.
Lots lots more, some of which has already been said, some of which I can't think of. Oh no you don't! Incoming witty reply, ETA: 300 seconds! |

T2 Capacitor Recharger = 25m T2 425mm Rails = 20m T2 Damage Control = 300m!!!!
Covert Ops Cloak = 85m
Command ships pushed 300m easily.

In june 2003 there were like 2-3 industrial ships mining in a belt.
Knowing absolutely nothing, i looked at them from my little velator, i was thinking how u'bber powerfull those guys must be
Another two from before you were born: remember one of the ccp devs joining our npc corp channel in the first few weeks of the game, thanking us for joining/playing.
2003 was absolutely fantastic for hauling your stuff up from 0.0. Back in the day the world/american playerbase was a very small percentage compared to us euro's, you could afk a loaded alt up... only around 1000 logged on between 5-8.00 gmt:) ______ Your signature was a freakishly huge image and needed to be nerfed. When I joined in "Cold War" the Dreadnaught was still the first and only capital ship (not counting freighters). I think the Moros was able to use +5 more Drones with each new Skill Level on top of the 10 standard drones.
The first capital ships were build and losing a Dreadnaught, or having one stolen was CAOD-worthy news.
Thorax having 8 Heavy Drones!
Oursulaert was a new trade hub and second only to Jita.
16k users online was a new record, but when more 100 people were inside a system, even with with most of them idle, lag was unbearable.
A feeling of emptiness, just moving a few jumps away from the hubs and main routes you could be the only one in the system. 0.0 still felt like a frontier.

- Providence used to be the best region in the game for solo/small gang roaming
- Even though they were awful, I had a Dramiel I would fly around occasionally and do hisec plexes with, because they look so cool! Occasionally I'd wonder why CCP made such a beautiful ship so terrible
