Nowhere is safe. If someone attacked you then CONCORD would have come to your rescue, but maybe not quick enough to prevent your demise.

Oh yes it is possible. Normal? I dunno. Only in a station are you safe, provided you don't (direct) trade or work with contracts.
Auto piloting is the way to get yourself suicide ganked. It helps when ever you boot up EVE to go into, what I call, "paranoia mode". Just play the game with just one thing in your head: everybody is out to get you, one way or the other, where ever, when ever you are they will do their utmost best to gank you.
Welcome to EVE.

You should read a bit in the Crime and Punnishment section of Eve forums to get a better understanding of your liklihood of getting ganked. If you are in a hauler, your liklihood of getting ganked increases with the value of your load. Manually jumping to zero reduces your risk, but does not eliminate it. Autopiloting in a shuttle can get you ganked by somebody who is bored, but it is a minimal loss unless they come back and pod you too.
That said, I'll use autopilot when moving 20+ jumps in an empty hauler or flying in a shuttle but I still observe a few basic rules: Never autopilot near a trade hub (esp Jita), near a common gank system (e.g. Niarja), or through lowsec. When I move higher value stuff (50M+), I try to use a heavily passive tanked battleship and always jump to zero (no autopilot).

What were you flying?
Any cargo onboard?

You can be attacked anywhere, except I the few new player systems are out of bounds and so petitionable.
Even if your cargo was not worth it you may still be attacked if someone mistakes its value. Someone may have set off a smart bomb just for a laugh.
You do not give any details about your circumstances to say much more.

Only if the attacker has nothing to gain from it. Ganking someone hauling valuables in a rookie system is as allowed as in any high sec system. It's killing people for the sake of killing them that is not.

Ok thanks, didn't know that. I also messed up the original post but too late to edit, it makes no sense right now

this is why I tank my hauler... and you'd be suprised the kind of passive tank you can throw on a Badger2.
just last week I survived an attempt near amarr by at least 2+ thrashers. I say at least 2 because I came pack to my computer just in time to see concord lighting them up. poor guys didn't even break the shield.

When you get suicide-killed in high security space your pod will continue traveling on autopilot. This means you might have gotten killed in a 0.5 system (usually happens if you have been hauling something valuable) but when you come back to your computer you will find your pod at the destination system, which can be 0.9 or 1.0 sec status. Open your character sheet and check under combat log -> losses to see what exactly killed you and where.

Still can't petition it, it's not against the rules to suicide gank for teh lulz.

Sure you can petition it.
You just get laughed at, a generic response of "too bad", and you contribute to the congestion of the petition system

Some will pop you no matter what the sec lvl of the system is, depending on what you are flying and if they don't mind taking the sec status hit. Alot of Zephyrs went down right after they handed them out. 1.0 systems were prime systems to target them in as people generally feel they are safe.

I suicide ganked a pod one time in high sec spacejust because my sec status was too high for my liking. It's now sickeningly high so I may have to do it again :( But just goes to show, it doesn't matter what you are in or what you are hauling, it's always a risk.

Tough enough to survive a good deal of suicide attempts. A lot of peeps will see the invuls running and not bother. Only downside is that for true effectiveness, you need to be around to activate the hardeners. Swap the Rigs around for cargo ones where applicable.

Don't AFK while hauling valuable cargo and in all cases, properly tank your hauler.

I saw an industrial destroy a battle cruiser that was apparently out to get the cargo. It was pretty fun, and I'm sure embarrassing for the BC :)
