Remember when El Gordo promised not to raise fuel duty for the year? Then raised it 4 times that year?
That's why we have expensive petrol. Oh, and there will be another fuel tax rise in October. ____________________

interesting thing is, the barrel price isn't that outrageous either, yet we're seeing a price climb like the one back in 2008. ---

Well, here we go, someone complaining about petrol prices and laying blame with NO clue as to why prices are so high ... so, yeah lets blame the politicians. As for the muppet who said the election would be lost because of it, think on. Do you REALLY think that the other side will lower the tax or increase it next budget if they get into power ....? The reason the good ol' USA pays less for its fuel compared to the EU is that the US Federal/State govts subsidises fuel to a massive amount. Report If you want to search for yourself just type "US federal subsidies of gasoline" into Google. The current reason for such high fuel prices can be put into 2 basic reasons ... 1) Countries such as China and India are buying more crude oil than ever before therefore pushing up prices 2) Speculators on the markets are buying oil to artificially raise the price therefore making more profit for their investments. As traditional markets such as currency trading are no longer paying big bucks they are moving into fuel as never before (theres always been oil trading but never before on such a large scale). Also remember my dear Britons and other EU'ers: Higher taxes on things such as fuel means less taxes out of your pay packet. Taxes to pay for all the things we hold dear have to be raised somehow. Driving your car on a daily basis ISNT as nescessary as you think. Petrol et al are considered a luxery not a right.
Always makes me laugh when the morons come out and complain about petrol prices. No-one on the British political divide will lower fuel taxes, EVER. They will only increase. Learn to live with it or buy a bike.

I read this book once where a supposedly enlightened and democratic contry (secretly controlled by a sinister clique of rich families) staged an illegal war in an oil-rich dictatorship, accompanied by a massive campaign of disinformation and staged terrorist atrocities before and after the event, in order to sieze control of it's mineral resources.
Once they had control of a significant oil reserve, control of it was handed over to the ebil financiers pulling the strings behind the scenes and they sat on it in order to limit supply and keep profits high, whilst simultaneously having any advances in alternative energy sources sabotaged and their inventors quietly done away with.
Can't for the life of me remeber what the book was called though. Still; thank chemical chance it could never happen in the real world eh?

So, supporting an illegal war, selling all our gold at the lowest possible price, raiding the pension funds, and borrowing heavily to get us out of a recession which was caused by excessive borrowing, they're all forgiveable. But hiking up the fuel duty is the real deal-breaker?
The sad thing is, you may be right. Because that's the one which affects everyone right now.

If you're going to rant at people, at least get it right.
In the UK, fuel tax as of September 2009 was 56p per litre, and it has since gone up by another 1p per litre to 57p. 17.5% VAT is also charged on this, making the total tax on a litre of fuel 67p.
Now, at my last fill-up I paid 117.9p per litre. So 57% of everything you pay for fuel is tax. 57%. That's a colossal amount of tax. You're paying more for tax than you are for the petrol itself!
As for your argument about oil prices: bull****. In 2008, crude oil had an average price of over 91USD per barrel (peaking at over 126USD). In 2009 it dropped sharply to about 53.50USD per barrel, and it is now starting to rise again, with a price of 72.90USD in March. Still nowhere near as high as it got in 2008. People put up with high fuel prices because of this illusion that oil prices are at an all-time high. That's wrong. They're not. ____________________

Thats exactly the point, if fuel goes up, everthing else goes up at the same time. Logistics costs go up for supermarkets, food gets hit the most as Britians fresh fruit and veg, around 95% of it is imported. By aeroplane.

Source BBC - http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/food_matters/foodmiles.shtml
Originally by: BBC Thanks in part to concerns about climate change, more people are stopping to consider the impact that everyday goods - including food - have on the environment. Food miles, the distance food travels from field to plate, is a way of indicating the environmental impact of the food we eat. Half the vegetables and 95 per cent of the fruit eaten in the UK comes from beyond our shores.
Increasingly, it arrives by plane - and air travel gives off more CO2 than any other form of transport. Agriculture and food account for nearly 30 per cent of goods trucked around Britain's roads and, according to a Government report in 2005, the resulting road congestion, accidents and pollution cost the country ú9bn a year.
My apologies for forgetting the details of this little factoid, half the veg and 95% of fruit imported, with a growing proportion of that transported by air.

$2.80 here where I live. Highest it ever got for me was $4.20 I think.
I was actually somewhat happy when fuel costs were expensive, as it got the public to start thinking about the future of oil. Once prices fell again, people suddenly forgot all about it. Hopefully when oil prices go up again, people will start considering renewable energy sources seriously again also. ----------

Well it's been almost exactly one year since I got my car. And I remember unleaded selling for 92.9p per litre. Now I've just checked and the same petrol station is selling it at 118.9p per litre. Back-of-the-beermat sums tell me that's... 28% rise in one year. That's... a little bit higher than inflation isn't it. ____________________

Yes well, My truck is 1997 with 180,000 miles that I paid in full with my own money when I was 15. My insurance is $27 a month. Gonna drive it till it DIES!
Besides I also have my 45 mpg ride that I take as much as I can as long as there isn't ice on the ground and I don't need to carry something that won't fit in my backpack/saddlebags. Oh no you don't! Incoming witty reply, ETA: 300 seconds! |
