On a side note: The foreign press has obviusly focused most on the fly-ban that followed the ash, but not reported about the terrible conditions of the people that live in that area, mostly farmers. The noise from the volcano, the pitch black conditions in the middle of the day and the loss of animals that have had to been put down since the new eruption. People can bearly go out of the house, get little to no sleep due to noise and seeing their lands being destroyed is truely tragic.
Until the eruption is over that is, volcanic ash is some of the most fertile soil types imaginable. That'll be green again in no time flat. But until then, yes it must be pretty horrible for those living just far away enough to not have been evacuated.

Same here, they say that some of the lava-chunks that the volcano spits out in the air are the size of a car. Unbelivable force.

I hope so. It rained a couple of days ago and turned the ash into a concrete like cover :)

Those are rather small chunks. When St. Helens went off it took out the entire north face of the mountain.

And the bang was the loudest noise in human history. Its daughter (anak Krakatau) has a long way to go to beat her mum

recorded history.
thing is, there seems to be evidence of an even larger explosion in the area, dating back to prehistoric times. Think the remains of it are a caldera in the area with still some activity.
nevermind good ol' Yellowstone too. ---

It's so hard to find good reliable information on this thing... So many people and "reporters" just writing random bull**** without providing any source or reference.

the media coverage of this needs more footage of news anchors/reporters attempting (and preferably failing) to pronounce eyjafjallajokull rather than just refering to it as "a volcano in iceland" or some other varition ____________________________________________ Please resize your signature to the maximum allowed of 400 x 120 pixels with a maximum file size of 24000 bytes.StevieSG |

Edited by: So Sensational on 07/05/2010 15:39:36 Is this the QnA thread for volcanoes? I hope so because I have a question. When a volcano like this erupts, does it uh, ease the pressure of other volcanoes around the world or is it completely unrelated? Do eruptions like these delay Yellowstone or dem Siberian Tarps from going off? It may seem dumb but I don't know **** about volcanoes.

I'm sure it does, but there's a reason I don't know **** about volcanoes, having problems finding that information isn't it. There's alot of text and pretty pictures to sift through on wikipedia/google before I find my answer, if I find it.
