I am trying out trading and was testing some ideas.
I seen an item that I could buy out and then resell for a small profit. The intention was not about the profit just testing to see if I understood how trading would work.
In the time it took my eyes to move to the bottom of the screen to see the purchase in my items, the exact same item was reposted for the same qty and price.
Thinking the market orders just didn't update, I closed the market window and reopened it only to find that in fact the order was reposted within the blink of an eye.....no way I can make a profit now.
So I am wondering if that is what a market bot looks like or is there a trading mechanic that allows you to do this?

There is, expired orders may have this effect until cleared on downtime. You think you are buying from the order you see, but instead you are buying from a hidden expired order not yet cleared.

NPC orders will re-up instantly when filled AFAIK, tho it should be for a slightly higher price each time. Are you sure the time left on the order was < 90 days?

Has to be the expired order mechanic.
Regarding high-sec mining:

Did the "time left" on the order remain at 71 days 12 hours and change ? If yes, that order has not been touched at all recently. Every time you repost or update and order it resets to a whole number of days - AFAIK, nobody can post an order that expires in X days and 12 hours the exact moment you post that order. So it would have had to be the problem with an order that expired, disappeared from the list, but is still active until next downtime.
If the time did "reset" to a whole number in days, then it was a repost, and it is fishy.

Its counting down, currently at 71D 11 hours and change. Given that it was a few hours ago, I think its original time was 71D 15H but not sure.
If we can only set whole days and not days and change then I guess it must be waiting till downtime.
I just can't believe that of all the items, of all the glitches, of all the things for me to blow my first trade seed money on I picked that.
I take it as a sign that trading has it out for me :) But that is ok, lesson learned and I do bite back ;)

Or you just sort the market by price.

Closing the market window doesn't work, sometimes you have to relog to get the market orders updated properly. However, I only experienced this in Jita. |

The person that was selling said item simply had a limit on the amount you can buy. People often do this trying to scam. If you post lets say a small ancillary current router for 800k each and you put 5 of them up, the 6th one you put up you change the price to 8m. People being impatient will will simply click away thinking they are all being sold for 800k then bam! they buy one for 8m. "I don't know how to put this but I'm kind of a big deal."-Ron Burgundy

Edited by: Matalino on 17/04/2010 13:18:21 Is there an order for a lower price in the same station?
That is the only way that I know of where what you are describing can happen. You can click on the order you wish to clear, however, you always buy from the lowest priced order in that station, therefore the order that you clicked on does not change.
As Akita noted, there is no way to repost an order with 71 days, 12 hours. Reposted orders must start fresh at one of the drop down options, all of which are multiples of 24 hours. This doesn't work for sell orders. You cannot set a minimum quantity for sell orders. It only works for buy orders. Likewise, Margin Trading only affects buy orders.

Could also be a masked CCP sell order. Had the same thing with Pyerite about two weeks ago in jita. I bought out the order about 6 times and everytime it got refreshed with the same odd number in units(around 7.1million), the same price and the same time till expiration(also an odd number but def below the 90d mark). I've recently observed this with faction tags. Another identical sales order gets re-posted instantly after buying out the original one.
There are rumours about trade bots, and this behaviour is different from the time when ISK trader gangs had monopolized the implant market too.
