Greetings, dear EVE Online players and developers!
We would like to create a topic about mysterious and very successful endeavors performed by a player named The Monkeysphere and a couple of his alts in Eve Online. Those events eventually lead to a public outcry and investigation on the most polular Russian EVE community forum at www.eve-ru.com We would also like to raise an issue about a general use of exploits and tampering with client side of the game.
To CCP staff:
With our utmost respect for the developers, we ask you to take a note, that in the first three days of that topic appearing on Russian EVE forum, the thread got over 1000 replies. At the moment that thread got over 2000 replies and the entire Russian EVE community is in an uproar.
The alleged exploiter, The Monkeysphere, registered and posted on the Russian forums (http://forum.eve-ru.com/index.php?showuser=25746), claiming that he was doing it to combat macrobot users. However, it seems that lately he got tired of killing macrobots and started to kill regular players, who brought it up to the Russian Eve Community. Our preliminary figures state that The Monkeysphere was petitioned over 30 times, however, GMs claimed that "their logs showed nothing."
We are not making any conclusions about The Monkeysphere allegedly using exploits, the only one who can confirm or deny that is the CCP team. Nevertheless, we can say for sure that there definitely is an issue, and it should be resolved.
Unfortunately, the situation got more complicated. From the very start of the public outcry, Monkeysphere immediately ceazed his "pvp" activity, which raises some additional suspicions about the methods he was using.
Those who may doubt that The Monkeysphere is unusually successful at ganking ratting ships - just take a look at his killboard. According to the figures, he was the most accomplished ganker in EVE during the last year. Nobody in the entire game can compare to him in the number of ratting battleships destroyed during that time. http://eve-kill.net/?a=pilot_detail&pl...&view=kills
Described below are several signature characteristics of the methods that he uses: Appearance in local channel:
Lately, we received a multitude of different reports written by players from various corporations and alliances about an unusual gang, which moves through 0.0 sec. Most of the reports describe very similar occurrences, which could be summed up into a report about The Monkeysphere abuse:
1) Victim didnÆt see anybody in local chat before he was scrambled by Arazu (Goose Hypocrisy) It looks like this. When the player detects neutral in local chat û he immediately warps to POS. But by this moment he discovers , that Arazu is already near, scrambling him. It takes just 10 seconds (showing up of neutral in local, warp to POS, detection that Arazu is already nearby)!
2) In most cases, when the victim was sure, that something is going wrong û there was a distance to nearest gates that, Arazu takes at least 1 minute to reach. For regular Arazu it takes approximately 45 seconds to travel 1 AU (acceleration, acceleration in warp, braking in warp). But there where cases, when victims claimed that there were over 40 AU to the nearest gate. Even for warpspeed rigged Arazu it take 50-55 seconds to travel this distance. And now the most important! It requires to guess where the victim is from the very first time to remain concealed for 50-55 seconds and tackle the ship ! The third paragraph is about it.

Edited by: Xtover on 23/04/2010 19:53:15 you write "siezed" his activity, you mean "ceased"
you also changes the claims that they went to warp to a POS, originally and in the thread they say they attempted to warp to a SS and log... which is standard macro behavior.

3) Often victims where in complexes, not in belts
Time which is required to find a ship in complex leaves no possibility of staying unnoticed (We all know that in 0.0 space people learn how to monitor local chat quickly). Here is the example of the ship killed in complex - http://eve-kill.net/?a=kill_detail&kll_id=6261974 (Alvus Queen are not spawned in belts). This carrier was in complex aligned to POS (Cause he already knew that The Monkeysphere was flying not far away) - http://eve-kill.net/?a=kill_detail&kll_id=6363589.
When the first neutral revealed in local he clicked ôwarp toö but couldnÆt initialize warp as he was already tackled before someone showed up in local.
4) Most people raised an uproar had super expensive ships (To save their vessels they were monitoring local very attentively). a) Machariel (killboard cost - 3,13 billion isk) http://eve-kill.net/?a=kill_detail&kll_id=6352883 b) Golem (killboard cost - 4,23 billion isk) http://eve-kill.net/?a=kill_detail&kll_id=6246099 c) Vargur (killboard cost - 2,14 billion isk) http://eve-kill.net/?a=kill_detail&kll_id=6184900 d) Golem (killboard cost - 9,68 billion isk) http://eve-kill.net/?a=kill_detail&kll_id=6184758 e) Golem (kilboard cost - 3,87 billion isk) http://eve-kill.net/?a=kill_detail&kll_id=4012066
P.S. In our investigation at eve-ru.com, we discovered an exploit that The Monkeysphere have used. A bug which allows pilots not to appear in local was replicated .
Screenshots and video evidences of The Monkeyshpere exploit where placed at forums and youtube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8uj4BNYi-ss http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ODUeTKmV-5o http://dl.eve-files.com/media/1004/NoLocalExploit2.rar
Also there are several utilities which where used to replicate an exploit but they will not be available for public access.
We ask EVE û online community to help us to investigate current events , and also expect official comments from CCP.

Watched the youtube vid. All I see is a guy ratting alone in local, then some other guy logging back in and auto-warping to the spot where he logged off near the ratter. Fail. -- Eventus stultorum magister. |

No, in the video the player in question is clearing in the system and yet does not show up in local... until he wishes to.
Whatever his motives, that is a problem that needs to be corrected.

Yeah, I'm just going to remove myself from any discussion on this one. I don't have time to sort through the threadnaught and evidence to make an informed opinion.

Excellent post. Evidenses are collected, an exploit itself is described, links to the killboard also are there. Let's hope, CCP already is working on solution of this issue...

Do you support exploits?
Whether the bot community is bringing this to light or legitimate players, what does it matter if the claims about the exploit are substantiated?
