Hi, the official OS X client is a bit crappy, because it run slow, need much ressources and is not that smooth then it should be. Now I think about running Eve on my MacBook using wine. Has someone tried this already?
I make this thread to get help, if it doesn't work and if it work, to tell you my experience :)
What do you think about this idea?

In my opinion, the problems with the Mac client are because they run under the Cider wrapper. I think you will probably have similar results running it under Wine. They still won't run like a native client.

Xeah, the problem is the cider wrapper. But cider is very general, i think with wine it should be a bit more for eve and in fact of this it will be faster. Thats what i thought. I will try it the next day and then look :)

Bear in mind that Mac OS X doesn't have a proper version of Wine, and overall 3D acceleration support is poor compared to the Linux version. If you are going to give it a shot, you may be better off trying Crossover Games since they focus on 3D acceleration. ---- FREE Explorer Lead Megalomanic EVE Null-Sec Player Influence Map http://dl1.eve-files.com/media/corp/Veritefw/FWinf |

I thought macport's kept parity with the normal releases of WINE? Although nothing stopping you downloading the tar ball and compiling it yourself once you've got all the dependancies nailed down.
Last time I tried WINE it worked pretty well on OS X, coreaudio and such all seemed functional and it's capabilities seemed no more and no less than the usual Linux version.
It's worth noting that WINE is at the heart of the Crossover product you mentioned. Probably not the latest unstable release either.

Macport's version (which is just a self-compiled version anyhow) is up to date, but the developers don't take any significant efforts to support WINE on OS X. The 3D support is as buggy as all hell compared to WINE under Linux, which is a huge problem when you're talking about playing games. Crossover is better about this (they ditch X11 for something of their own), but there's still a stark difference. ---- FREE Explorer Lead Megalomanic EVE Null-Sec Player Influence Map http://dl1.eve-files.com/media/corp/Veritefw/FWinf |

Actually they probably roll XQuartz in to their front end, same as Transgaming do.
Now, I would say that the latest builds of WINE (1.2-rcX) are achieving parity with Linux as far as the OGL<->DX stuff goes. Speaking as someone running EVE via Wine on OSX you understand.
It's not quite as integrated as crossover or a Cider wrapper though I'll grant you.

Quite the reverse I'm finding. MBP isn't running as hot, gets same or better frame rates with more graphics goodies turned on. That broken X11 implimentation that causes the slow down when you go to the desktop... doesn't impact quite as bad (it's still there mind, but no where near as bad).
It's not as well intigrated as the Cider client though. And occasionally refuses to start resulting in having to kill wineserver and go again.
