Edited by: DIGI Byte on 28/04/2010 12:57:15 I'm sure many of you have used the Alt+Click menu (right click by default)
This menu is the most convenient and often the best way to select and set your destination, etc. Now... there are several issues with using this menu, obviously the first issues that anyone will notice, depending on how you want too use the menu you right click on a certain part, however if you want to warp to a location you have to right click on open space, simple?
Its not so simple if your ship or your camera is inside or surrounded my a large object or many objects, you have to wrestle with the camera to find an open space to right click, this can be solved with a simple new option when you click on an object when you wish to select open space.
another thing many players notice but they over look is depending what your doing, you often have too wrestle with the menu and sub-menu's just to make a selection. Eg, your in a hurry and in your haste you want to warp to 0 of your preferred station, but your mouse keeps on rolling over another selection as your trying to select it. This tedious selection causes allot of stress and frustration for many players, even when they are not in a hurry, guiding the mouse to your selection feels like your doing surgery.
I have an idea for new design, that is easier too use, look at and quickly allow the player to make there selection.
_ _ _ . _ _ _ Here is the horrible current Alt-Menu. Current Alt-menu System I have highlighted and made keys showing guides on how you would use it, to display how much trouble it is too use it, just to click a button.
In my idea, this is all compressed into more of a quiz style layout, removing the dreaded "on rollover" and using a structured tree layout that is simple to use.
How it works; I have highlighted certain areas, the pink represents a button or a link that will go back to the selection
EG, in this picture,
If I click on the header or button "warp to within" it would take me back too
where I made that selection, and by keeping this layout in a smaller area, the player is able to easily select what they desire without having to make the mouse do a epic journey across the screen which feels like "The Lord of the Rings" just to press a button.
(also if you haven't noticed I added a possible feature as a tick box, That can show you where your current auto-pilot's path is headed, it would simply look like a yellow Dash - next to the name and category showing where the auto pilot is pointed)
And now with that in mind, lets take a look at the current one and you make your choice, which do you like? Current Alt-menu System
Thanks for your time.

Yeah this is definitely a +1 build for me. Collapsed tree instead of spread all across the screen...much better. I prefer this.

Nice. Personally, I'd go further and actually implement this in a fixed place on the screen along with all other options that appear depending on the context of the situation.

An excellent post, clear and well thought out. I hope CCP take a good look at this idea.

LOVE it, would make my like easier! I see no downside. CCRES is recruiting pilots who want to live in WSpace/Wormholes. Fill out an application here! |

+1 Bump
This is a fantastic idea though I agree, the option to use the old menu system should be retained. I would recommend this be used as the primary system.

Interesting UI change, I don't think I've ever seen this style of menu system before. What other applications/games use it? (just so I can play around with it to get a feel for it)

I don't know any other game has a menu system like that, The closest thing I know of that has a menu like that is the program photo-shop and its layers panel.

i love this because.. 1. use would be alot simpler, in smaller space 2. no closing off all the tabs you have open cus you mouse off for 1 second.
i use a laser mouse on a somewhat reflective surface so sometimes my mouse moves on its own, particularly during slight motions like using the pop up branch menu, this idea would help that .

So... Your to lazy to click?
ok first of all... You need to understand this... your hand is on the mouse... your finger is alread resting ontop of the button, and even in the current menu system, you still have too move your mouse over the selection...
And clicking doesnt slow you down, Its not hard to click the mouse, it doesnt slow you down, if you complain about clicking taking up too much time or energy, I think your more suitable to play solitare, not an online game.

Your presentation of your idea is excellent, but an ignorance of usability is beginning to show.
BTW, what your idea is trying to address is relevant to this, and I agree that the sometimes huge menu items could do with work. -

Edited by: DIGI Byte on 29/04/2010 16:17:34 at the moment the rollover causes more trouble than its worth and it leaves a messy trail of boxes over the screen.
Also, you can't say clicking is bad, making 2 extra clicks is worth it if it removes that mess we currently have, and you can't bag out on usability, when many other games and programs people use have lots of clicking, take minesweeper for example, or if thats too old fashioned how about diablo 2? where every attack is a click, or how about World of Warcraft?
The point is, 2 or 3 extra clicks wont make Eve suck
If clicking annoys you then why don't you install some voice reconition software and voice command your computer to click for you?

That is subjective, and that 'messy trail of boxes' is called an interface.
Originally by: DIGI Byte Also, you can't say clicking is bad, making 2 extra clicks is worth it if it removes that mess we currently have
I can say clicking is bad, and that 'mess' is a nice flowing menu system which keeps clicking and (in the absence of long station names) movement to a minimum.
Originally by: DIGI Byte and you can't bag out on usability, when many other games and programs people use have lots of clicking, take minesweeper for example, or if thats too old fashioned how about diablo 2? where every attack is a click, or how about World of Warcraft?
So the fact that other games are badly designed make it ok to make this one badly designed? Anyway, I don't know about Diablo or WoW, but minesweeper requires those clicks. EVE patently does not, since it currently does not have them.
Originally by: DIGI Byte The point is, 2 or 3 extra clicks wont make Eve suck
It might speed the onset of RSI though. And that would suck.
Originally by: DIGI Byte If clicking annoys you then why don't you install some voice reconition software and voice command your computer to click for you?
Tried it, not good enough. I'm pretty good with keyboard shortcuts though.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not some usability evangelist, I'm the one around here who thinks the UI is ok as-is - but that doesn't mean I'll advocate making it worse. -

Well that is your opinion and that is why I think what DIGI suggested should be a alternative cause some people may like the current system more. But I still think it sould be implemented.
