I don't get this. Except that Ubuntu is free.
People use linux for their os because they are above average in computer literacy and don't mind the extra hassle of setting it up just like any other niche hobbiest out there would pour over his infatuation. Realistically its no better or worse than a windows os for general computing after it has been properly configured.

it is marginally 'safer' for the average user, not requiring anti-virus or defragmenting tools..
I have a friend who runs at least 3 different AV, just because she has no clue how to actually use a computer... i keep telling her id install linux for her, but she is resistant to change as always.

I use Ubuntu, OS X and Windows 7 frequently. Although each has its merits, I set my default OS to W7 about a month ago. I just find it's so much easier to use, plus utilises all the hardware in my case.
