Well, as CCP Hammerhead said, "We won't auto-transform your character. We talked a lot about developing such a system but the new characters are just so much better and so different we decided a human eye was going to be the best way to copy your current portrait." So, there will be new character creation system and it will be impossible to make your "new" (i.e. current) character look the same as before. (I think it would be really difficult to make exactly the same portrait again even with the current system.)
Plus there are many players who will use the new system to completaly change their look.
So, when (if ever) Incarna is released, we're all getting a plastic surgery! Lol, someone should come up with a backstory for this happening to all capsuleers of New Eden at the same time, otherwise it will be really weird :)

Interesting.
I would really dread to have to redo the portrait of my main toon . Support toons who cares how they look? Can`t find the best way to say this but... it "ruins" the immersion you had so far with yer characther.

Here's my attempt (feeble as it may be).
The self labeled 'demigods' that Pod Pilots would like to be known as, have always suffered the threat of total synapse collapse upon the entering or exiting of the Pod Module. Short of waking up in their clone station upon the destruction of their Pod and spending a few hours preparing a new ship, crew and supplies, many would never again breathe air or walk through a station, their Pod being their home for life.
In development for several decades sees the technical upgrade of all Pod Modules and biological interface equipment that makes separating the form from the pod that much safer, quicker and easier than ever before, with one minor side effect.
After even a few days the biological form adapts to it's embryo-like atmosphere and begins to lose muscle mass and reduced circulatory ability, meaning that without a new body, selected and designed by the pod pilot, their current form would not survive the shock from exposure to the atmosphere outside their pod environment.
The new system will allow all pod pilots to first design a new form with the updated hardware and a free clone upon completion of the design. All Pod Modules will be retro-fitted and all existing clone bodies will be upgraded.
It will of course be good practice to plug in a long duration training skill during the period of upgrading to ensure synaptic receivers remain active and alert during this time.
It is not known the effects of planetary gravity on a pod pilot form as tests are on-going, the official advice will be to conduct activities at stations where gravity is uniform across New Eden.

I believe that you design the basic body shape at the same time and they just take a snap shot of the head for the in game use and keep the body and face for walking in stations activities. They did say excessive eating &drinking will slowly reshape your body by adding weight, that there would be gyms to remove excess weight also there would be in game plastic surgery as a player skill so you can get other players to help mod your face. Of course this was the discussed in the original announcement several years ago. Macrointel, the place were the nature order of the universe does not hold sway. Well, like Hitch Hikers guide to the Galaxy did with Hairdressers we could say they were all put on a ship and ejected into space. They are picked up and, desperate for work, agreed to do everyone's face for a discount as long as it was done immediately.

I wrote that when I was concentrating on two things and having three conversations (verbal not IM) at the same time, so it's probably disjointed in places.
I knew the basic elements, but didn't put the effort in to each paragraph - I'm sure it it could be even better in a shorter form (ala Shadow).

No no, we looked like that all along û it's just that the imaging algorithms in the DED pilot registration terminals was a bit flaky and could distort the features of the subject something fierce. CONCORD had spent all of the Assembly budget on buying insta-gates and anti-podship goo-destabilisator-o-tron cannons to get the population under control, so the fix was put on the back-burner until the next hardware revision cycle (and no-one liked the DED chief back then anyway, so the cycle "accidentally" got extended a bit longer than usual). ——— “If you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡… you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.” — Karath Piki |

No. They might, however, boost standings to some agents.

Jovians interrupt the cloning "image" technology used in PODs and the cosmetic data of all capsuleers is lost. A massive identity engineering project follows, and each capsuleer (their brains are still instact, after all) must engineer a new appearance for his or herself.

As far as I recall all capsuleers were plugged into the same system of capsules. That means that all work the exact same way. So... You ask for a backstory WHY did it happen that we will all have plastic surgery?
CONCORD introduced an upgrade to capsule software. It was to make all capsuleers have all the knowledge to pilot all ships right in the moment you enter a capsule. It was to be a REVOLUTION for all fights in space, a revolution for the human race. Something went wrong. When the new script was introduced it created an error, later called the red goo error. It caused the genome of all the people in capsules to get damaged. All DNA data, including the data in the capsules got irreversably damaged. CONCORD forced the CC*cough cough*P developers who made the script to finance new genomes for all capsuleers. They had to insert a minor ammount of DNA to all new pilots, only DNA data regarding external appearance. Your current clone has plastic surgery, all jump clones are trashed and you are coppied again with new, better (or sometimes worse) looks. ALL THANKS TO COUGH COUGH PEANUTS FROM ICELAND! And their borked script.

Well, I think your reply wins the thread. Shadow's reply is (more or less) funny, but not really serious :) Also, making that up while doing other stuff is kinda admirable. I'm trying to imagine what would your reply look like if you were concetrating just on that... And also your backstory is "compatible" with the Jovian Wet Grave story, where the first pilot testing the capsule ended up with seriuos neural damage.
