Surely there must have been a few corps along the way that simply imploded and the members quit playing, leaving their POS's unfueled and unguarded.
So is it possible that there POS's out there that are sitting there with ships and bpc's and who knows what else just waiting to be found? I know that even unfueld the towers still have a shield, so would you have to take down the shield first to "smash and grab"?
And finally, if so, is there any way to tell if a pos is offline while scanning it down? Or do they all appear the same on the probing map?

Edited by: Ospie on 11/05/2010 13:53:21 Yes they exist, no they don't have a forcefield.
Easiest way to find them is use directional scan with both towers and force fields showing, if you see more towers than forcefields it means there's an unfueled/abandoned pos there.

Are there abandom POSes... yes there most certainly are. The trick is finding them. In hi sec, I've yet to see one. For that you would need to war dec the corp.
In Wormholes, i see it all the time. Usually the corp quit or it's possible they lost their scanner and couldn't find their way back to the WH.
As for what you need... depends on the size of the POS. A small tower, a long time and a lone BS could do it. A medium tower needs more DPS, and a large, just leave it be or bring in one heck of a fleet. Kill the tower, then pop the various modules for any loot, though more than likely, someone's already done so.
As for scanning... no but just find the POS and warp to it or near it. Set your directional scanner to cover everything and if there is a shield, it will showup on the directional scanner. Granted no, you can't just warp into a system and quickly probe out POSes without shields, but with some work you can figure it out.

You could get lucky, yes. Don't have to take down the tower if it's offline. Just shoot the stuff you want to loot. Labs and such. If you want to unanchor and steal the pos mods you have to kill the tower.
As for scanning, count the number of towers and the number of forcefields. If the number of towers is greater than the number of forcefields, there is an offline pos in system and you can start the process of scanning down which one.

What about ship hangars? If they left ships behind. Would you have to take down the shield to fly them out? And bpos/bpcs would be in the labs, but wouldnt they mostly get destroyed from popping the labs? or could you "loot" the labs without popping them?

Read the answers you already got again and you will have it answered... The shield is OFFLINE, meaning its not there, so no you dont have to shoot it... And you would have to shott the ship hangar as structures only drop loot if they are destroyed.

you can also kill the tower and unanchor the mods. they will drop loot when you repackage them in station.

The forcefield is offline, but offline towers still do have their shield. They are still easier to take down as you can use close range fits and heavy drones. Since the forcefield is offline any thing normally inside the forcefield is now targetable.

Only labs do that, and then only BPOs that were in a non-delivered job. The stuff that would have been in the hangar area (decryptors, BPCs...) are lost when unanchoring. -- 081014 : emoragequit, char transfered to a friend, 090317 : back to original owner blog |

My corp recently found such a c2 with 2 ship hangars and 2 corp hangars. The corp hangars gave us some free fuel worth several of millions (only 2 types though) and the ship hangar dropped a thantos, iteron 5 and bestower... no one could fly the thanny so we blew it up for the loot and lols, took the bestower back with us though, Golden Orb Technology inc was the alliance name. That was a good day for us :)
I found another one tonight too and destroyed the ship array, got a nice new shiny osprey with shields warp stabs and core probe launcher complete with probes for my alt.. hangar array dropped sleeper loot too ^_^
AFK corp pos hunting is fun, and very profitable :P

Edited by: Pankas Carter on 13/05/2010 02:24:30 Keep in mind, if you find this in a wormhole, you might stand to make more ISK (and friends) by contacting the corp/alliance first. They might pay you a good ransom for the location, and it certainly won't hurt your reputation (if you're not an arse about it)
I mean, it's not like they can magically find their way back and defend it should they not cave.

This is what happened when we found the carrier with the offline POS, the corp that owned it seemed more interested in swearing at us than paying a small finders fee (yes we offered nicely and would have accepted less than we were asking for) for taking them back in though so it does't allways work.
