I'm just starting to PvP and I find that I have difficulty getting a good appreciation of who's where on the battlefeld. My overview is well set up, but I shouldn't just be using the overview, should I? The tactical overlay doesn't help, it just adds to my onscreen information overload.
My question is how can I set up my view to get tactical insight? Clearly one view doesn't fit all uses. I'd welcome opinions on level of zoom, position of the camera, usage of the overlay etc.
To give a specific example, one thing I have tried is to zoom far out and look stright down. This gives a 2d view of the x-y plane that I can make sense of, but it is misleading when people move on the z-axis.
I'd appreciate any thoughts, tips and screenshots.

I always fly off the overview because in most cases you will want to hide your brackets. Which means you won't actually see the ships icons in space.
You will get used to it after a while. As for a Tac overlay, the only time I ever use it, is if I'm in a cloaky and trying to navigate around things in space or get past a gate camp.

Edited by: Florio on 14/05/2010 10:40:51 In a fleet fight you tend to zoom out as much as possible to reduce lag and fly off overview.
In a duel you may want to do a close camera "Look At" your opponent to see if they're orbitting or trying to pull range, or to help you reduce transversal. Vital.
On gates and stations I normally fly so that I can just see my ship, and then spin the camera to get a full understanding of who is where.
Tactical overview is good for uncloaking hostile ships and using on grid safespots.

Most of the fighting I do is solo or small gang so I leave the brackets on(just a thought).
As the others said, use your overview primarily. Make sure you have velocity, radial velocity, and angular velocity(some people prefer transversal)showing on your overview.
This will give you a good idea of what your targets are doing. How fast they're moving, how fast they're moving towards or away from you, and how fast they are moving around you.
Hope that helps.

Fleet: no brackets / only hostiles on overview / zoom out Small gang: tactical overlay on / all brackets / zoomed so the 10km ring is visible when viewed overhead then tilt the camera so the numbers form a squished X
Tactical overlay makes decloaking covops and recons absolute child's play. It also makes manual piloting easier as I can just click away as I see the target approaching a ring that I want to keep him out of. |

Edited by: Toot O''Rien on 15/05/2010 15:28:49 I like the last post. I was not sure how the better hunters zero in on recently cloaked ships line of travel.
I keep transversal and velocity columns on the overview, and fairly standard, zoom out in larger gangs sans brackets and gangmates, and I 'Look At' single targets I am trying to tackle so I can see where they warp to if I miss.
