Hey guys. Im just curious really. Does EVE online currently have any real competition in the sci-fi MMO category. Will there be any during 2010?
Dont get me wrong I love eve, I am just curious as to what else is out there? Or perhaps will be soon?

That will depends on how Infinity and Black Prophecy turn out, since those two are pretty much the only potential competitors EVE has. Star Trek Online and the upcoming Star Wars: The Old Republic aren't really competition since they appear to have entirely different mechanics (no Sandbox for one).

BP is more like another WoW in space
Infinity looks like the ultimate challenge but it doesnt look like it will be released anytime soon and by the looks of things majority of the features are or will be in eve with the exception of a FPS style combat.
EvE has way too many unique features to be able to compete with, games would either have to copy or be completely different. I think infinity will attract people like eve did back in 2003, slow and steady, but then whats the point of playing a dead game with lots of features and old bugs when you can just play eve ;)
I have a theory about the next two years in general for eve and feel by the end of 2011 we will have all or most of the major soon things completed, its just the way things have been going, how they have been designed and I am convinced fanfest was moved from 2010 to 2011 for a BIG reason, concealed too.
I think in terns of competition it would be pretty hard to compete with a complicated game, so while some involve space it is far easier making a wow type game (so 5 year olds can play) than making a complicated game This is so not my main

I'm sure Infinity will steal a lot of Eve players, it'll be coming out shortly after Duke Nukem Forever.

Eve has no competition. Even other space games are just cookie cutter MMORPGs with spaceships. Eve is really unique.
1) Player driven economy... there are no "no trade" epic swords. You can actually become very rich simply by trading. 2) Skills instead of levels... ding! gratz! 3) Killing, scamming, stealing and backstabbing are not only tolerated but encouraged and considered mini-professions... oh noes! Ninjas! 4) Ever evolving ever improving game play via FREE expansions... and these expansions change the game in big ways. It's not just a higher level cap and some new epic gear in a new epic instance. 5) RP fluff. Eve gives us a reason to fight if you want one. There is a steady stream of fiction out there to keep different factions ****ed at each other.

quite wrong.
there is a steady stream of ****ups out there to keep diferent player organizations ****ed up with each other.
...granted that nowadays it's a wee bit stale on the 0.0 front, but I remember when everyone was ****ed up with everyone, at least on 0.0 ---

I remember too and despite the heavy drama, it was an epic timeline, but eventually something like that will probably happen again, I think ;)

What makes me like eve over than other mmos (and even most sci fi games in general) is that it has got no aliens. Being alone out here makes it so much more cosy <3 -

But yea thanks for the input guys. Ive been playing eve well over a year now and im very sure il still be here in another year To be honest it seems like the only thing thats even near EVE is that Infinity thingy. The atmospheric flight does look very nice.
Hey didnt CCP experiment with atmostpheric flight with EVE?

Vendetta Online is an indie space based mmo with alot of similarity to Eve. Free updates like Eve, free trial with no cc, and you get to manually fly your ship too.

only MMO I've ever played that has had anything near the scale or harshness of EVE is an old MMORTS called Mankind. Sadly certain major game flaws, exploits and terrible management ruined it, else it'd probably still be going strong today

Infinity will never be released. I considered trying that before EVE (Noctis IV and Freelancer got me into space exploration games). Infinity looked to have as much progress as Noctis V.
