Now we only need to reverse engineer the chemical reactions required to get to the combination of chemicals this artificial life is made of and we will get the prerequisites of abiogenesis. --------

I have to say I agree with one half of my self. The other half, the one that is a greedy bastard that wishes his autoimmune disorder was erradicated by science, loves this type of stuff.
Also, I saw a Discovery show on genetics. This guy spurned by the concept that birds descended from dinosaurs wanted to grow chickens that have tails. They at least had video of eggs showing that he was successful to get some to start growing tails while still in the egg. Pretty awesome yet scarry stuff.

oh I totally agree with you, but let's be honest: this thing will make it all go **** up, as soon as someone thinks about either making a weapon out of it or a ways to produce clean water.
and I am pretty sure someone just thought about that already. ---

the brain is the most powerful computer ever, and it just evolved by chance. imagine the computing and storage capacity of a artificially designed genetic computer. but we must build in a self destruct mechanism for when it developed thoughts and feelings.

Damn it's going to get really tough to see in here with all that glare.. would you people kindly remove your tinfoil hats? Cause you know.. its such radical thinking. The whole self replicating, self adapting tiny lil organisms that can cause harm to the human race. None of that exists already in reality today. Create an army of our own lil bugs that do good but might turn on us! Oh the horror.. the HORROR!
It's fantastic news. Couple this with nano tech.. the medical cures that could ensue from this are amazing. Cancer gone! Self replicating endless energy.. a new way to conjure up the mythical perpetual motion generator, using synthitic DNA! ASTOUNDING. Can we imagine that instead of being frightful? I seriously hope the fearful and God/ethical nuts let it continue on its merry way unhinder'd. If a God did create the Uni.. then the laws in place would stop us from doing something he/she/it doesn't want done.. and as far as I'm concerned, anything we or whatever accomplishes is a 'whatever, knock yourself out and have fun' to him/she/it.

dude, I know it's an amazing stuff. it can help quite alot on our lives and all that.
but let's be honest, someone will think of a way to weaponize this, OR, there will be an accident, a mutation or something where this will go on a rampage and start eating away our hydrocarbon-based stuffs for example.
it's not being paranoid, it's being realistic. ---

OK, first of all the brain does not operate like a computer and the two should not be compared. Secondly, evolution has nothing at all to do with chance or luck. Unless by 'chance' you mean the origin of life which may or may not have been down to luck.

No they are not. A computer can only process a sequence of 1's and 0's ... on and off ... high volts or zero volts. A computer can only do what it has been told to do by software. It can not think. |

All in all we are machines, just different hardware and software.

This isn't so much a scientific breakthrough as it is a decorative milestone. Like the moon-landings it seems very exciting to outsiders but doesn't really mean as much in practical terms as it may appear.

No, we are not machines, no the brain is not a computer, no computers are not modelled on how the brain works, and no, IBM do not claim that they are. In case I didn't express myself clearly enough, NO

Nice we got that cleared up then. Sorry to derail, but every so often someone posts something with such stupendously huge errors and misconceptions that it threatens the whole fabric of the multiverse.
Fortunately I was online today to sort things out.
Meanwhile back on topic .... Yeah it's awesome that an atheist American scientist has created a man made life (not quite as awesome as the holey grail of kick starting life from base elements, but still pretty awesome all the same). Whatever you think may come from this advance in science, one thing is clear ... it is yet another jagged nail in gods coffin

Charles Darwin postponed releasing his ground breaking theory of evolution for years because he was worried about the impact it would have. And the impact was huge. Approx 150 years ago was the last time someone could say they believed in the virgin birth or in holy miracles whilst keeping a straight face.
I hope this new research isn't stifled due to fear, or even worse, religious objection. It's natural to fear the unknown (Darwinian evolution is responsible for that!), but this sounds pretty big ... as much as Darwins theory or the harnessing of electricity. About time we had a proper break through instead of just refining existing techs.

Nothing to add, but I'm genuinely shocked that pacmans birthday has generated more interest than this major scientific break through!

I beg to differ, and so would every scientist that studies the human body
EDIT: TO all the Pac-Man haters, this thread has double the posts as that thread. Give this one time to develop. There is mouch more potential in this thread for discussion, then the other thread offers in the act of reminiscing.
Well; maybe they could both last long, but trust me, this type of thread use to go numerous pages where as google startup page topics rarely make it to page two.
