Edited by: Hal Jericho on 25/05/2010 19:00:40 Hey all,
I'm relatively new to EVE, though I've dabbled off and on during the years when WoW was too cartoony. I've always really liked the idea of the sandbox MMO but never had the time to really get into EVE until now.
Onto the point of my post: I can't decide between an industrial character and a combat character. There's a lot I like with both:
INDUSTRIAL: I've never had a chance to participate in the PvP that is market-wars. No other game really has the 0.01 ISK game. I'd like to manufacture a bit and mine for extra cash (but not necessarily mining the materials I use -- I understand the concept of opportunity cost).
End-game? I think a null-sec mining corp would be great fun -- mining in a fleet, hanging out, etc.
The downsides? There's no real heart-pounding PvP moments.
COMBAT: I like the thinking-man's style of combat that EVE has -- it's not twitch and it's not lop-sided like in WoW or Guild Wars. Running missions, however, looks like it could be as boring as mining in the long run!
End-game? I thought getting involved in a mercenary corp would be good fun -- beating up on people and getting paid to do it sounds somehow more honorable than lurking in lowsec looking for lost noobs or trying to bait highsec carebear miners by flipping cans.
The downsides? PvP combat -- been there, done that. Sure, EVE has a higher penalty for dying than all other MMOs, but that's the difference between strawberry and vanilla, really.
(Quick edit: I'm not saying that I find all PvP combat boring, but WoW PvP was super exciting at first when it was new and then became a huge and predictable grind -- and that's partly the reason I've moved on to EVE!)
I guess what I'm REALLY looking for is this:
Can I get some anecdotes from null-sec miners and combat pilots describing what their endgame is like? Maybe if I had some real experiences to compare to what I'd theoretically like to do, I could make an informed decision.
1. What do you like most about your chosen career path? 2. What's the most exciting thing about it? 3. What's the most boring thing about it? 4. How many hours a week does one need to invest in EVE to really get something out of it (e.g., if I can't log-in at 2AM to undercut competition by .01 ISK, I shouldn't be playing a trader, etc.)? I really don't know how much of a time investment mining in nullsec is, especially compared to a combat pilot running RvB, for example.
TL;DR: I can't choose between Industrial & Combat, so I'm looking for experienced pilots to share their opinions and info so I can make a decision.
PS. I'm thinking of trashing this toon anyway (but keeping the name since I like it) because I think I messed up his second re-map. Stay tuned for an attribute/remap question after I've made my career decision!
Thanks to all who reply!

Do both. Run multiple accounts and use your industrial accouts to pay for themselves (with GTCs) and fund your PvP activities.

I honestly hadn't consdiered that option.
Isn't it really time-consuming to farm the ISK up for 2 PLEX a month?
I'll consider it, but I'd still like to hear some end-game anecdotes about nullsec mining and anti-pirate combat pilots.

The whole point of having industrial accounts to make you money is that you don't have to farm anything

I see what you did there...
By end-game I mean what I'm planning to do with the majority of my time on a character with a fair number of corresponding skills. I can't fly a Hulk or Interceptor on day 1.

Good question. I really don't have a good reason why not. Combat is combat, and either way you're blowing up something somebody else paid for.
Pirate corps usually don't have any interest in industry, though. It's a shame I didn't start this game in 2005 so I'd actually have a shot at fighting/mining on the same character and not have to support 2 accounts.
Is it possible to dabble in frigates just far enough to be a competent tackler/support but actually do mining as my main profession without hamstringing myself by having to skill-up in too many directions?
If so, which race's ships would be ideal for this? I'm guessing Minmatar, since I've heard the Rifter is really flexible in small gangs due to projectile falloff being awesome (either orbit @500 under their tracking or at 7k deep past their falloff) and that the Vigil is an awesome tackler.

I'd recommend just staying with one account for now if you plan on buying gametime with ISK. It doesn't take much to overwhelm you with farming boredom :/
Like someone already said, do both. I'd go the combat route, since it's by far the cheapest to go with and with a great return in ISK aswell. Basically you need 100m for a decent Battleship, and you've got yourself a plex farming character. PvP and PvE skills walk hand in hand, so you can get a taste of that aswell.
Personally I created a combat toon (this one), which I did everything with until I could afford some Research alts which now generate ISK for me so I can have fun with this toon fulltime.
