I do have to say that this actually happened to me....
I've also almost lost a ship because I didn't see that tackler speeding for me from 300km to under 40km until I saw the bracket closer than it should be (yes, I have brackets on since the patch because of the bug). I was roughly 15 jumps from the fleet scouting another system...so why the delayed overview? By the way, this is my signature.

Can you confirm that the 3s overview update is a bug as well, or did you just decide to nerf range-sensitive ship like that?
The update rate has not been changed but there are now less full reloads of the overview when in fleet
Is this dependent on fleet size or not?

Exactly the type of workaround Logi pilots hope will be effective for the months to come until the fix.
Heh, if you use the overview to target fleet members in your logi you are doing it very wrong.

Why are there three calculations being made for distance to your ship? Why aren't they all being hooked into the same equation? This could also be another "lag" reducer in fleet encounters and something the devs may want to consider looking at.
I can certainly see one kind of logic to it:
Flag a ships as "low/med/high priority" ù a flag that takes roughly no effort to check. All range calculations go through the same mechanism, but that mechanism is called up with different intervals depending on the flag. The only extra code is the flag check, and the savings in work load come from not constantly calling it for every last item on the grid, and instead reserving that level of attention for only a select few objects.
àwhether that's how it works or if actually produces any savings is a different matter.
The logic was more based on what I hear/read/see (on the fan fest videos) about how I/O is the main issue with lag in EVE. If the game is making 3 different calculations for distance, thats 3 different commands it needs to send each client on grid per ship.
So... 200 v 200 battle.
1 ship moves it needs to send out exponentially more updates rather than 1 x 400 and have the distance displayed client side. ________________________________________________ <--- My in-game me. |

Originally by: CCP karkur This only happens when you guys are in a fleet, right?
This is a bug and it will be fixed soon. If you guys notice that the overview is not updating properly, click the overview tab and it should start working again. Also, I believe it helps to change the overview filters so your fleet members are filtered out.

So is it a bug or a feature... two very conflicting responses in the same thread, And the 2nd quote is a contradiction in itself how can it both be not changed yet reloading less often

Well, yes, I guess you could say it's a contradiction, but let me try to explain what I meant:
The bug is that the overview is kind of frozen, it does not update distances and resort (that is normally done without total reload of the scroll). We have not changed the rate at which this update is supposed to happen. However, we did make some changes to the overview so it's not constantly reloading when you are in fleet (which is something people have been complaing a lot about).
The bug will be fixed very soon.

Quickfix for now seems to be changing overview settings. I find tabbing out and back quickly fixes anything frozen to my overview. ---

The problem is even OUTSIDE of the fleet OW doesnt update as often as before. You get circa 3 seconds between updates. I already managed to "teleport" my basilisk 6km from enemy and "teleport" around 20km in ceptors (that means someone sees me at 30km and in next update im 10km from him). This is NOT good especially in small gang combat where you actually need to pay attention to even slightiest distance changes.

Originally by: CCP karkur However, we did make some changes to the overview so it's not constantly reloading when you are in fleet, and that change is not considered a "feature" change.
So is that specific part a bug or a feature, and does it impact all fleet sizes?
In short, will we require to drop fleet to have the overview update normally after the bug is fixed?
The problem is, for small gang stuff/etc, if you fly ships which demand to be outside of brawling range, it's more or less needed to have the overview reload at very short intervals, so that is in fact quite a bit of a change.
Having it as a option you can turn on for large gangs and such seems like a great idea, but it's really going to hurt small gangs very badly where having up to date velocity and distance information is very important. I'm aghast that you did not feel the need to actually document this change.

After the bug is fixed, the overview will update normally for fleets (that is, just the same as if you were not in a fleet)

And will that update time be like it was before the patch? If it's gonna be 3 secs in or out of fleet then I can see that as being a bit of a problem. I don't understand how you have to cripple the overview in order to improve other things. Perhaps it would be best to remove the patch until CCP programmers can get it right (won't really be missing much anyway). I thought that's what testing was all about.

Yes, it should be the same, nothing has been changed that should affect that (as far as I know).

Edited by: Messoroz on 29/05/2010 17:40:18 The only fun overview bug I've experienced recently was a ghost player stuck(player wasn't in local/system and couldn't right click) in overview at the same fixed distance and changing states randomly from target locked, to neutrel, to red. I was not in a fleet and it last for about 1 hour.

Originally by: Abrazzar Only thing I have notices is that they set the updating interval of the overview for distances to 3 seconds. The updating interval for selected items in the item info section is still at a fraction of a second. Haven't encountered your issue yet.
This is idiocy, 3 seconds is looong when some ships are able to go at 2-5km/s.
Next we will have damage updates every 3 minutes :D
I hear they have that feature out in 00 already.
