Imagine how long it would take to read one of those.
The CD may be cheap, but the reader could be as expensive as ****! __________________________

stupid question.
'Described as a new crystal form of titanium oxide, the material switches from a black-color metal state that conducts electricity to a brown semiconductor when exposed to light,'
Doesnt that kinda mean that it must be handled in a dark room? .. and by dark, i mean no light?

Everyone knows that light burns nerd skin... and nerds are the only ones that'll pay all the extra money for these

this.. is true
and referring to the storage density, i dunno about you guys, but a 1tb disk (probably far easier to read/write on) would be plenty for my average backup needs (well, for me thats a full backup sans utorrent download folder about 5 times) Hell, even at 1/5 of their projected maximum we are talking 5tb..

First of all, those 25TB discs won't be the end of the line... Most probably. However:
And to answer your question: I think it is more related to the moment the laser beam hits the surface or track of data. Normal sunlight or room light won't be enough to trigger this kind of switch. At least I don't think so, that would be highly impractical.

Edited by: Karma on 29/05/2010 09:09:07 wait.. so I'll lose a whole 25tb when the disk goes unreadable (much like old CDs, DVDs, MDs, floppies, harddrives and every other type of storage-media does) ...
that's a lot to lose in one go.
on the other hand.. anyone remember those little crystals they had in Babylon 5? ;)

Yeah they seemed to be used for much the same sorts of things that USB sticks are used for today. Isn't living in the future fun? ____________________
