I currently work at a steel mill, make about 70k a year. But since it was opened in the early 1900s(one of america's first,it has world records, etc) it has always had the threat of shutting down. I'm a union worker there and the past year I was laid off for over a year, putting me into bankruptcy and no jobs to be found anywhere at that time.
Now, I have the opportunity to jump ship and go to a supplier of enriched uranium fuel for commercial nuclear power plants. It will be about an hour drive everyday until I can move closer, but do you all have any opinions on the job security or any concerns either way?
I know its not great asking on here, but trying to get a variety of opinions. The steel mill is unsafe and extremely hostile. My father is a one of the big managers there and he constantly wants to quit. But is to old he says, but as soon as I mention leaving to the other job he thinks I'm crazy

Yea because corporations breaking laws is great! Lets destroy unions and let them run over people. I was salary. Make more money on this side and can live with myself easier. Can't even describe how they behave at this plant. Anywhere else I'd see nothing wrong.
But when its 90f outside, 160 in our working area, its kinda useful to have some cooling. My father put one in the area I'm working in, and the plant manager decided all AC's had to go down because they "made the plant look like a trailer park"
Realize who the **** your dealing with before you take sides

Like I said ppl, always finding something to whine and complain about. You unions guys are soft. While the rest of the non-union workforce is hard at work making money for the company, ur sittin their with ur protest signs complaining.
You guys are pathetic. They should bring Ronald Reagan back from the dead and fire all u brats. Oh and explain that, "Realize who the **** your dealing with before you take sides" statement to me

Edited by: Rylie Gayle on 30/05/2010 03:24:33 Edited by: Rylie Gayle on 30/05/2010 03:22:02 I meant that by, know who your dealing with company-wise. A lot of places are fine ran by themselves. Like I said, I was on the other side of the fence. I have been salaried, union hourly, and non union hourly.
Yes in a competitive world such as today union benefits are great. But its not just the benefits that matter to me. Its the abuse of the work force. Sadly there are to many unions that turn around and abuse their corporation right back. Union workers say they are 'union brothers and sister' well if that's their belief then the union and the company is their mother and their father. They should treat them both with equal respect.
The company for which my union works for takes every chance they get to break any and all safety laws regulated by the government towards us, they harass us at every turn, and make it an entirely hostile work environment. The ONLY reason I'm still there is because of the benefits and the pay. But is that normal? Is it normal for a ****ing building to explode, OSHA gets called in to investigate, they are lied to until a video pops up on youtube which is then subsequently pulled off of youtube and in the end the company gets slapped with a 10,000 dollar fine for something that could have killed many people.
I personally seen a guy avoid being burned to death by narrowly ducking down before a fireball the size of a car flew over him.
Thats why unions are supposed to be formed. To protect workers. But I agree with a lot of anti union sentiment. Unions these days protect a bunch of drugged up idiots who put **** on a train rail to watch it get 'smooshed' only to be confused when he gets fired for sticking his ****ing hand under a moving train.
Unions should protect workers rights, wages, and safety. Companies shouldn't require unions to do such.
Edit: And the only reason I post this is because the company I work for now has left me so ****in jaded as to how the workforce actually is. I feel I can't trust companies. I'm literally scared to go to the other job in fear that it could some how be worse.
Edit: And the building that exploded. It literally exploded thats not an exaggeration. Although the official explanation was an "unexpected reaction" I call pouring molten metal into water a ****ing explosion. And the building was at least 4 stories tall by at least 1/2 mile wide.

Eh, dont worry.
You just ran into some jerks a few years back, most people did it seems, judging by a few documentaries.. ("Looks like a trailer park", wtf, jerk much? you probably earned more than him )
But, yeah - if it earns you money and you can drop out when you need to, then it's fine. So long as you can break even with the fuel costs though, and you can deal with the hours.. |

Well, it could be that you have this false feeling that your old man does mind it when you leave your current job and go (for example) to the nuclear power plant. You control your own life and not your father. He probably will understand that you need a different job, or not. If he doesn't, let him. Like I said - your own life is in your own hands and not in his, period.
(I consider this a typical father-and-sibling-at-the-same-job scenario combined with creditcrisis)
