The loss was not worth 60mill however the conveniance was. Just a name and shame for my fellow pirates who honor ransoms in hopes of more people paying them.

seriously.
some may honor ransoms, but generally speaking honoring a ransom is not consistent with the behavior pirates have already exhibited in attacking you, if its not <10M its not even worth tossing the dice.

I have made more in honored ransoms than i have in just killing the person. I have even ransomed the same guy more than once. He would not have paid the second time if i lied the first.
Ill never pay any of the Tropical Bunny Killers again though :)

Only the coolest pirates dishonor ransoms. Tropical Bunny Killers are cool for doing so and the OP is just a stupid noob who deserved to lose his isk.

Ransoms are hit or miss, not a stupid noob for paying. Some pirate organizations have fairly solid reps for honoring their word, some don't. I've personalyl caught people, ransomed them, then offered a small monthly protection fee or various levels. Works well for residual income.

I don't get how the OP is stupid... Ransoms are fairly common and usually honored, for exactly this reason. People not honoring ransoms are screwing up the game for us.

Think of it like this.
If you asked them to let you go first, and then you'd give them the isk, what pirate would EVER do that? And you're not even the one who proved yourself the unlawful aggressor in the situation.
If they wouldn't trust you to be let go first, then why should you trust them to let you go after you give the isk?

Agreed. In the years i've pirated I haven't ever paid a ransom for myself and i'm dumbfounded by those who actually pay the ransoms I ask for. I've honored all the ransoms i've recieved, but I highly doubt the other pirates in my region do the same (though generally they're too busy throwing disco's at gates to ask).
If someone catches me and asks for ransome, great, that buys me time to get my m8t's headin to the scene for revenge.

Of course, that can be turned around, as people paying ransoms are also screwing up the game for others, for exactly the same reasons. |

Possible rewards for pirates, X when you shoot someone, possible damage to victim Y when he gets shot. X is usually lower then Y.
If you're after monetary gains, a ransom (Z) somewhere between X and Y would be the sensible thing to do for both pirate and victim.
Some pirates live on the other "noble" pirates backs though and like to have X+Z where others only take Z. But the height of Z directly depends on whether it's profitable for the victim to pay it and still risk getting shot even when paying the ransom.
So, pirates dishonering ransoms lower the amount of ransom people would be willing to pay.
To illustrate that, if I have a 1 in 5 chance to get shot even while I paid a ransom, 5 times the ransom+the damage done to me should not go over 5 times the ransom done to me.
If this chance drops to 1 in 3, it would be 3 times the ransom+damage done to me which shouldn't be higher then the alternative: getting blown up 3 times.
So, short version: pirates dishonering ransoms lower the average amount of ransom people are willing to pay, so even even if you dishonor ransoms yourself, it's good for your own wallet to get all other pirates to still honor ransom.

Fixed for you.
To the OP: Sorry about your loss. Usually it's worth it to pay ransoms since pirate corps that gain bad reps are no longer able to make ISK, and are usually branded kill-on-site by other nearby pirate corps.

Edited by: Herzog Wolfhammer on 03/06/2010 01:46:35 Are there any pirate corps organized and powerful enough to run actual protection rackets?
I refer to the sort that have control of a given area and those who want to pass through or inhabit for any length of time can purchase the "right" not to be popped and protection from other hostiles.
Ransoming is more like a post-facto protection racket. :-P
With LVL 4 missions given adjacent to low sec (appearing to) ending up in low sec, you figure a protection racket could have better profit potential than "kill everything that moves".

Really, paying is the best possible outcome since, assuming the negotiations go well, the pirate makes more from you than he would from your wreck and you lose less than you would buying a new ship.
Really, the trick is to check out a corp's reputation. Plenty of pirates honor ransoms; some don't. A 30s run with google will probably tell you what you need to know.

Shame... They should know better..
Pirates that do not honor their ransoms won't last very long tbh, if you have a reputation that you do not honor your ransoms, people will stop paying, and you will lose a big cut of your income.
Too bad it happened, & OP, you got their corp name wrong. -

Looking for the tears. Yep none
Name and shame. That is all i am up to. Some of my fellow pirates do care. The ship was only worth about 30mill with all mods/stuff in the cargo. I paid them 60mill for the convenience of not getting popped. I have money to burn. I have billions you ****. I know what was going on. So stfu.

B) You were someone's *****?

What's this? Trying to justify being an idiot about paying a ransom? No worries, I'll give the benefit of the doubt to you since your first couple sentences were so promising.
