After reviewing the PI skills I've come across the opinion that remote sensing is (mostly) useless, for one major reason:
After you've scanned the planets within your radius, the skill no longer provides anything of value. The planets don't change, and with the limited number of planets you can maintain through skills you're not able to actually make use of every planet within 9 ly.
At best, I can see it being useful for the initial phase of getting into PI. But once the planet information is collected into a database for everyone to see, the skill basically falls off the map as something productive.
Thoughts? Am I missing something important?

You need Remote Sensing I to be able to scan a planet at all. Remote Sensing III is a prerequisite to Planetology.
I can agree that taking it to further might not be necessary. But if you often manage your planet from somewhere 5 to 9 light years away it would be nice to have it to IV or V.
Anyway, I wouldn't call it useless.

Wait, I thought remote sensing only allowed planets to be scanned. What defines how far you can "manage" a planet(build on it, etc).

You can manage a planet from anywhere, even docked. Scanning a planet is limited by range in light years according to the Remote Sensing skill (I think it is at max 9 ly). To be able to put down a command center you have to be in undocked in the system.

Fair enough. It does seem like anything beyond level III then will be of much use to me.

Edited by: Steve Thomas on 31/05/2010 00:20:21 it depends though, if you need to rescan becaus "shahewhomustbeaobahyed" droped a mass of extractors on you and plays clickfest 2010 for hours on end convinces you to move its nice knowing you dont have to be right there to get a new scan map.

I think remote sensing can be usefull past level 3 for Captail Pilots. Or anyone intent on using a Jump inside the 9ly. As you can see what systems are in range this way too. With out using other peoples tryed and true websites for plaining jumps you can just check on your toon at least up to 9ly.
So the skill is usefull out side of PI and for other reasons.
Is it a rock? Point a Lazer at it and profit. Is it a ship? Point a Lazer at it and profit. I dont realy see any differnces here. |

haha ya and now all we need is the Remote Ship Sensing up to 9ly. hahaha no need to be in a system to scan a ship down now lmao.
True blue bounty hunter skillz :)
Also would like to see a skill that lets my buy other peoples kill rights :)

Remote sensing
Quote: The ability to gather and analyze remote sensing data from satellites in orbit around a planet and to produce proper calibrated surveys.
Level 1: allows scans within 1 ly Level 2: allows scans within 3 ly Level 3: allows scans within 5 ly Level 4: allows scans within 7 ly Level 5: allows scans within 9 ly
Where does it say you can control planets? It just gathers and analyzes the data.

As far as i know you do not need the skill once you have a control center on the planet?
And you do not need either Remote Sensing, Planetology or Advanced Planetology if you have a friend that can send you a screenshot of the ressource distribution

You don't even need above level 1 in remote sensing to be able to see the distance, since when you tries to start scans outside of your range it will say "At your level you can only scan planets in x ly, this planet is at yy ly". Think you will need at least level 1 or it will say "You need remote sensing to be able to scan etc..", but haven't checked and are too lazy to log into an alt and see.

Don't forget that making a remote sensing will give you an inacurate scan, the only way to get the best scan of a planet with your actual planetology skill, is to warp to the planet or have a CC on that planet. I stopped scanning remotely long ago, you need at least to be within the system to have a good picture of the planet, otherwize you will not see many hotspots.
So yes for me mostly useless. Not worth getting beyond lvl3.

There is one specific use which no one has mentioned, is PI related, and may become useful in the future: Ease of finding other Players' colonies.
Since the best way to find colonies is to scan for a mineral with the color bars set to the minimum - you need Remote scanning to do at all... higher levels would allow you to find enemy colonies without being in the system. This might prove useful when hiring Dust mercs. ---

Not really. Capital pilots just use the capital navigation window for that sort of thing. Far far more useful

That's probly true I dont fly capitals. It was just an ideal I had on other usefull ways the skill mite be used. Is it a rock? Point a Lazer at it and profit. Is it a ship? Point a Lazer at it and profit. I dont realy see any differnces here. |

The skill does allow scanning from a greater distance, but there is a price to pay for it. The distance from the planet decreases the accuracy of the results. Try it. Whatever skills you have in Planetology and Advanced Planetology, the precision of the scan is inversely proportional to the scanner's distance from the planet.
Scanning to see what other installatios may already be on the planet? You can scan at the limit of your range, cloaked, set sensitivity so the entire planet is "white" and easily locate other installations.
Scanning in search of resources? Get on top of that planet, cloaked, to get the most accurate results.
Good hunting.
