Since moving to ATI from Nvidia a few months ago, I been getting a very strange bug. It's actually really, really annoying.
Suns often "flicker" on and off very quickly. It's so distracting. I have only had this bug since moving to an ATI card from Nvidia.
Have other people had this problem? Is it possible to fix it?
Cheers Eugene

ATI cards are just very buggy. Got one myself to replace nVidia aswell. And what a mess, lags in dustclouds, flickering ingame and flickering in on the desktop too when it changes idle modes. I got 2 screens. However ATI fixed the last issue..by simply disable any power saving mode with 2screens in their latest driver.
ATI is fast...but very buggy. Its like driving a Ferrari, but having top stop for a 30mins break every 10km.
So now im waiting for nVidia to launch their next middle performance cards. 440, 450, 460 to get a new..again
So stupid I gave my old 8800GT away! --------------------------------------

I suggest you do a driver sweep and download the latest version. Same for you OP, I have not experienced this problem with my 4870x2.

Tried reinstall aswell. This is a HD5770 card.
EDIT: The issues are also fairly common if you visit forums. Specially for people with more than 1 screen. --------------------------------------

It probably doesn't apply now, but in the past when changing from nvidia to ATI (or vice versa), I always did a OS reinstall.
I'm currently running a 512MB HD3850, and it is excellent. Eve looks awesome and my missus is somewhat jealous (I must get her PC upgraded ).

5870, no issues here. Running 10.5 Cat's. And to those spewing reliability nonsense - at least ATI don't release drivers that break their cards ---

I've had cards from both manufacturers and the only reason I went back to Nvidia was due to ATi's poor driver support.
I love ATi cards, low power consumption, fast and all at a great price. If ATi could get their act together with drivers, Nvidia would be well and truly fubar'd.

Try turning off the 'Sun is occluded by ships/planets/objects option.' Sometimes when the sun flickers, it is a far-off asteroid belt or station that blocks is for a second, but the camera shake is so dramatic at that distance is will produce a flickering effect as it passes over different objects.

Just out of interest (and for personal error-tracing reason), do you have "occlude suns" turned on? If so, doe the problem persist if you turn it off? ——— “If you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡… you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.” — Karath Piki |

Confirmed, or you can just turn camera shake off, it's annoying anyways.

Well you may see it that way, personally I've only recently moved back to Nvidia after giving ATi a good year but I've had enough. I see it more in the way of consistency, sure Nvidia dropped the ball with the 196.75 driver, but they were quick to pull it and let people know. **** happens.
Like I said, if ATi sorted out the driver support, Nvidia would be well and truly screwed and I'd buy another ATi card. They are after all cheap and very fast.

Edited by: Tiberizzle on 31/05/2010 21:32:00 ATI cards have probably the worst drivers in the world. It's a real shame they're ripping marketshare from nVidia with an inferior product by benchmarketing to the gamer/overclocking kiddos.
Best solution: buy an nVidia card and be amazed at how it actually works, and driver issues are actually resolved promptly rather than maybe before EOL of your card.

Edited by: Grez on 31/05/2010 23:25:34 The amount of tripe being spewed around in this topic is unbelievable... People still hold on to 2-3 year old driver woe tales.
I've owned 3 ATI cards in the past few years (4550, 4870, 5870) and none of them have had any issues what-so-ever. On the other hand, my brother who has owned 4 Nvidia cards has had nothing but reliability issues with them (fans dying, cards having to be sent back due to dying, capacitors blowing, general overheating to failure, games constantly throwing GPU BSOD's and glitches).
We each have our own stories to tell, but please for the love of God keep it to the facts. As of today, and as of the past few years, neither company is particularly ahead of the other. If you take the recent fiasco with the Nvidia drivers disabling fan speed ramp-up, then ATI are ahead. Not to mention ATI do monthly driver releases - Nvidia do not.
In the past, ATI had issues with drivers, and that's no secret. But just because a company had issues in the past, doesn't mean you can hold them to that account for years to come. Do your research!
As for the actual issue at hand, I have an ATI card and don't experience the issues you're having. Perhaps you should update your drivers, ATI release monthly drivers @ link (top right hand corner). ---

Graphics cards fan boys, whether Nvidia or ATi, they will always see the other side as having the worst drivers and/or cards.
If you want to stick with facts, at least try and be objective. Claiming one Nvidia driver screw up puts ATi ahead in the driver stakes, is just more fan boy nonsense. There are examples the other way, such as ATi issues with BFBC2, but they are being sorted.
Anyone would think you lot are on commission.
