Reasonably new to the game, but I have received many of these messages already.
You all probably know the one: "Hi, I'm moving to low sec tomorrow and can't bring these highly desirable ships with me. Please convo me to buy at a healthy discount."
I've never bothered to convo, as I assume the person will try to pull a trade window scam. (Usually the characters are a month old and have a surprising number of very expensive ships that they likely can't fly).
My real question is, is this scam even based on a real phenomenon? Do people actually sell all their goods in high sec when they join a low sec corps (I assume their new corps must supply them with stuff?) Or is this just a case of people copy-catting a scam they've seen before?

Yes, it's a scam. Usually it's the victims of the same scam that does that.

i nearly fell for this scam. what happened was i was on my alt in amarr and saw this ridiculously good offer in an evemail i got. says he wants to sell 3 navy mega and 2 something faction ships. since i was just browsing the contracts for ships recently i kinda knew the general price for these ships. so i convoed him and asked him if he still have 2 of the navy megas in stock. he replied sure. i was -genuinely- happy it wasnt sold out. so i asked him to contract em to my main. the thing with me is, ALL money i get from my alts i transfer straight away to my main (to see how much i was gaining overall for my missions) so i dont have any isk on this particular alt.
and wat do you know, he trade windowed me. seriously tho, by this time i still dont think he's a scammer because it says Navy Megathron in the trade window. however due to the laziness that is me to hop on my main and transfer the isk, i flat out closed the window and went to sleep.
that is the story of how i avoided a scam. scam free since 2007. <3

if you're buying a ship worth a billion and the guy cant be assed to make a 5k contract... its a scam. all legitimate traders will make a contract for you.
although, some people do sell their high-sec goods before they move to low sec/null sec. its a bad idea because you never know when you'll need to go back. its best to just expand your assets, instead of relocating them into an area that might not even be yours tomorrow.

Especially with the out of the blue tradewindows that try this scam, I tend to attempt a reverse-scam: just enter about 1% of their asking price in the tradewindow. I'm probably not the first to try that though, none of them have fallen for it
I read in some other thread about a scam involving quickly changing the amount of isk inbetween the time they add the item to the tradewindow and them clicking accept. Might be a tad risky though, if you're not fast enough, you'll have just bought a very pricey standard megathron - We provide the risk CCP forgot to put into high-sec mission running. |

Keep trying. I have received a few very cheap "Royal Federation Navy Fleet Caracals" and other such nonsense ships this way. The funny thing is when the scammer *****es and moans because he has been scammed himself.

It works. Usually the scammer tries to accept very quickly so you won't have time to realize what's going on and retract your offer. So quickly that they don't even bother to check the price themselves.

This prevents against the renaming scam...but unfortunately not against the last second ISK change scam or the bait-n-switch. This is why I only use trade windows between alts.
On another note, has anyone noticed that the login time is under an hour?! I forgot to mention that you are in fact reading something that is called a signature. |

a variation on this scam is to get someone to join your corp, tell them to sell their stuff and they can buy stuff in your 0.0 space, then when they sell their stuff and buy it in your space, boot them from corp and keep it all.

Originally by: Ghaylenty some people do sell their high-sec goods before they move to low sec/null sec.
I assumed it must happen, with such a frequently run scam built around it, but it seemed like an odd idea in the first place. Thanks for the answer!
It's too bad trade windows and the fact they can't be used if a scam is possible (i.e. deals with everyone but yourself). Especially since the fix is as simple as:
- items and money are placed in the window; (same as now)
- both parties click a "lock items" button; (the new part)
- both parties inspect items in the window and they cannot be removed (Although the whole transaction can be cancelled by either party); (same as now)
- if everything is fine both parties click accept; (same as now)
- the transaction occurs and both people get what they had the opportunity to inspect (same as now except people get what they expected
Of course, contracts can substitute. But why not fix a mechanic that's alrady in the game but is (by poor implementation) useless. I could understand if the idea was to encourage scamming (which is part of the game) except, really, an in person trade (what I understand the window to represent) should be the least likely place to get scammed.

Tell that to the fake Rolex and fake purse sellers in RL. You think you are getting a good deal and you end up paying for a Wal-Mart watch with a heftier price tag.

I disagree with the latter point. If you're genuinely leaving high sec, liquid ISK is more useful to you than assets in regions you might not come back to for months. You can always buy replacements for whatever you sold off if you ever go back to high sec.
But yeah, any legit player will use the market or contracts. The trade window is only useful for things that cannot be marketed or contracted (ie, partially used t2 crystals). Anything else is probably a scam.
