Srsly. In the US it's considered a girl's sport...which would be absolutely hilarious if they ended up somehow going far. No one really gives a crap about the World Cup in the US.
I think it's forgivable to suck at a pansy sport.

I thought it was starting to "catch on" over the Pond, at last.
I always suspected a grand conspiracy (Tin Foil Hat Time ) clandestinely supported by the American Football powers that be, to undermine the popularity of Soccer in the US by making sure the womens team are brilliant and loads of kids films are made about soccer.
Mike Myers and Woody Harrelson were on TV last night in an England v Rest of World pro-celebrity Charity soccer match at Old Trafford, Woody got the winning goal in the penalty shoot out!
Actually "Team USA" do have one or two decent players now. We'll still do 'em over on Saturday tho.

It has ever so slightly started to catch. Will take a while before it becomes popular though. Also, Fˇtbol players sexiest ball players.

The US will take that group, the only good thing England bring to the World Cup is their hooligans singing, can't wait for some Rule Britannia myself.
Funny fact added, US fans are the most numerous coming in from abroad apparently.

Which is precisely why no one there cares about it.
Also, ROFL @ all the soccer fans taking offense to my post.
To compare rugby to American football is a bit premature; first of all, in rugby you arm tackle...you don't spear someone in the chest with your head in the hopes of knocking them unconscious like you do in football. It's really easy to say, "Oh yeah, they're all wearing pads lawl!" when you've never played it. I've played rugby, soccer, and American football and I can tell you that the most painful, physically trying of them all is American football. The pads are there to keep you from getting killed, not to keep it from hurting. Every single hit hurts like hell. Sure, in rugby you get a knee in the face and a black eye or a busted nose occasionally, but only occasionally. You're not running down the field at full speed using your entire body as a projectile in the hopes of physically hurting the other person so much that he either gets taken off the field or he's afraid of you for the rest of the game.
On the other hand, I much prefer the sportsmanship and camaraderie in rugby to American football. American football has become too individualistic and not anymore a team sport, imo.
Soccer? LOL. They trip on their own feet and they go down crying. Sure, their skill is really impressive with all their dexterity and whatnot...except for the aforementioned broken eyelash and having to be carried off the field. I'm looking at you, Italy...probably the only thing I hate about living here: soccer fans.

It's the #4 male sport in the US because the other three are baseball, football, and basketball. It's always been like that. It's growing because kids are becoming more and more coddled by their parents who don't want them to get hurt. There's also an air of "everyone gets to play" instead of "you play only if you're good enough" with younger players. Honestly, though, my only gripe with it is all the whining and lack of strategy. Running for 90 minutes is no easy feat. However, the whining and crying has got to go.
I will say, however, that English football is a bit more entertaining than most other teams. There's less whining and such.

I may be wrong, but my understanding is that in the US, football is extremely popular among children up to college age, but because their are no, or few, football scholarships to higher education, interest and activity drops at that age, as sports talented kids are necessarily directed towards more 'traditional' American sports.
Also, England are abysmally bad at our 'national sport', and hopefully we will fail to progress from the group, so that we can settle down and enjoy the rest of the competition without the dumb hype and jingoism.

There are scholarships for just about everything in the US; there are fencing scholarships, lacrosse scholarships, band scholarships, hell there are even chess scholarships. I'd say that the interest drops mainly due to peer pressure in high school; kids get tired of being teased, which, sadly, is a way of life in high school.

I completely disagree with that analysis for the reason of its growth. In the upper levels of soccer, kids club through professional, fˇtbol has an injury rate equal to football and basketball and easily surpassing baseball.
Football, fˇtbol, and basketball are full contact sports and soccer has a concussion rate approaching that of football and rugby. Also, the concept of parents coddeling kids by pushing then into, falsely labeled, safer sports as a whole is bogus due to the growing popularity if youth rugby in a good number of places in the states.

If soccer has a concussion rate "approaching" football and rugby, then it's because they're taking dives. Soccer, baseball and basketball are not full contact sports, not in the slightest. Lacrosse is a bigger contact sport than soccer. The injuries in soccer are due to accidents and most often are ankle and knee injuries by sliding, diving, and such. You don't run down the field TRYING to overtly hurt someone in soccer. There's a difference between accidentally sliding into someone's ankle and hitting someone so hard that their helmet flies off.

I guess you are not really familiar with real, down-to-Earth soccer.
In soccer, they throw themselves against the ball, or the opposing team member's ankle, in full tackle. With very, very hurting footwear.
Headbutts, kicks, push, tackles, leg sweeps, all of them are illegal...and all of them happen in most of the matches.
We are talking real, measured injuries in here. I can assure you that the worst injuries I have ever witnesed were soccer ones. I mean real, gut-revolting broken bones, legs split open and such.
I am definitely not a soccer fan (in fact, I can't stand it) but it's not the sissy sport you're depicting. Far from it.
Check this, for instance. All this footage is from the same match, and I assure you it's not a particularly gruesome match.

Also, I guess this kids (Americans) are "diving", right?

But can you do THIS in American football? and your idea that soccer lacks strategy is laughable. Sure it's more subtle, and they don't stand around broadcasting codes with gangsta hand gestures for every set piece, but just because you aren't knowledgeable enough about the game to appreciate it, does not mean that it is not there.

We typically frown on the grabbing of other men's genitals; it doesn't exactly help your case against it being a sissy sport, either.
Soccer lacks strategy, and I can prove it to you:
"Oh look! He just scored a goal for one point! I wonder how the other team will catch up...will they be forced to score a goal, score a goal, or perhaps score a goal? Maybe they'll get close enough into the opposition's side in order to score a goal."
Yep. Great strategy there.
Not knowledgeable about the game? Dude, I live in Italy. I'm forced to watch this crap every Sunday for the past 6 years. It's boring, lacks strategy, and is full of pansies. "OMG! Someone tripped him and made him fall down! Wow, that must be a full-contact sport!" Please.
You see, you're assuming that I've never played it and know nothing about it. Not true. You, on the other hand, obviously have never played American football or else you would've realized that the comparison of the two is like night and day. They're apples and oranges, completely different. One sport is for people who like to whine and cry, and the other sport is for people who will beat the **** out of you if you whine and cry, mainly your own teammates.
