Ok, lets say a Drake and a Gila fought and they got within scram range and scrammed each other.
If both ships are fitted with > 70k ehp, obviously it will be a fairly lengthy fight if no one else intervenes.
Question: If the drake decided to simply shoot the Gila's heavy drones (even if the gila has spares), would this be an effective means for the drake to win the fight? How easy is it for HAM missles to destroy an orbiting Ogre II or Beserker II?
Anyone have any experience with popping drones as a tactic in this situation?

Edited by: Harotak on 10/06/2010 18:22:07 you are looking at around 5 volleys of CN Terror per Ogre II assuming max skills on both sides, so around two full minutes to kill 10 ogre IIs. I would just shoot the Gila since the drake should come out on top in dps/ehp assuming equal isk in fittings.

It would be a bad idea to shoot drones with missiles. Your not doing very much damage against the drones, and if both are in scram range, he can just scoop them before they take armor damage, and quickly relaunch and continue his pwn.
Also, you shoot his drones instead of him, so even if he has less dps than you, the fact that he can shoot you more, means a lot.
Best tactic would be to just overload launchers for as long as possible, and use your own light drones to shoot his drones. And fit a medium neut if possible, Gila has terrible cap.

Why are we assuming that the Gila pilot is a complete idiot? Any sane Gila pilot will be nano fit (IOW, much faster than a Drake) and using a 24k or better point. What will actually happen is the Gila will orbit at a nice safe distance and laugh as the Drake fails to do any damage at all. However, if the Gila doesn't drop sentries away from the fight, the Drake will shoot the heavy drones and probably convince the Gila pilot that the cost of destroyed Ogre IIs will be greater than the value of the Drake's loot.
End result: Gila either disengages to save ISK, or kills the Drake out of spite. -----------

This, really.
Gila is not a close range brawler. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A webbed Ogre II will take full damage from HAMs.

Or the Gila pilot fights a proper HAM-Drake who starts webbing and killing his drones. His choice then is very simple: disengage and abandon his drones or lose his ship. Trying to recall them leads to the Drake pilot overloading his MWD and sprinting into scram range unless the Gila notices and, again, is forced to simply abandon his drones.
If the scram lands, it's game over for the Gila.
It works against Ishtars (as they've found out to their cost, "lol drake" swiftly becoming, "WTF HAPPENED") and it'll work against Gilas. Putting the 'irate' into 'Pirate' |

Again, why are we assuming the Gila pilot is a moron? The correct way to disengage and recover drones is to hit the recall button and burn out to 50-100km to wait for your drones to catch up. Zero chance of being caught by a Drake, and you should recover most, if not all, of your drones.

The Gila is twice as fast (with LG snakes, which any decent solo cruiser pilot should have) as a Drake, is considerably more agile, and is a good ship to fit a faction point on. The only way a Drake is going to get a Gila into scram range is if the Gila pilot decides he'd like to fly a different ship. -----------

I agree entirely but it's still worth the Drake attempting it since competent pilots are pretty rare. The time you don't bother chasing is the time your opponent sits stock still at 20km and waits for his drones there :p Either way the Drake isn't dying so flying a counter-tactic in those situations can't make you any worse off.
