I'm looking for some new/interesting/good Anime to watch. Here are the criteria:
Genre: anything similar to Ghost In The Shell, Appleseed, Evangelion, Vexille etc.
It doesn't have to be a feature film, an animated series is fine. I've watched most (99%) of all similar stuff in the above genre thats more than a few years old. I'm looking for something new and interesting that I haven't seen/heard of yet. So, any suggestions? -

I'm generally not a fan of Anime. These films may or may not fit your definition of the genre. But I do own all of them and feel good about recommending them.
Akira: The is the standard as far as I'm concerned. Last Exile: Very good, even though the ending is weak. Final Fantasy: Stands up to repeated viewing.
Also, can recommend Paprika, even though I don't own it.

Personally I love Spirited Away, by Miyazaki. I can't honestly say it's anything like the ones you mention, as I've never seen them, but it's magical all the same.

I have only seen the first few episodes of Ergo Proxy, but it intrigues me with its dark feel. ALso the soundtrack is phenominal.

A Hard sci-fi anime? Thank you!
And I'd recommend Legend of Galactic Heroes - primarily Space Opera / Military sci-fi.

The only retail version of Thundersub I managed to track down a while ago was a site called www.grendizer.net, but it is closed until further notice apparently. I didn't mind since I have my collection, but this makes that series next to impossible to locate.

Time of Eve.
Human android relationships. True scifi in a sense that its asking questions of what would happen in a scenario where androids pass turing's test. Not only in conversational form, but visually too.
I suppose its one of those series of which you could propably watch with your whole family, or with people who haven't seen any anime. ___________ ___________ ___________ |

I came to recommend Planetes too. It is one of my favorite animes of all time. Would also recommend Crest/Banner of Stars - its got a unique take on FTL and space combat w/ a rather unique perspective - arguably, the story is told from an appropriated child growing up as one of the Bad Guys.

Stuff I've also seen: Time of Eve, Ergo Proxy, Macross stuff, Akira, Final Fantasy (the feature film).
IMO "Last Exile" and "Spirited Away" don't qualify as 'Sci-Fi'.
Is "Planetes" fairly combat/paramilitary oriented like GITS and Appleseed? Or is it more civilian oriented in a space environment? -

Civilian, it centers around the "debris section" of some space corporation. They're there to basically clean up space debris. The first scene of the first episode really shows the importance of that.

I don't know how much these are "Sci-fi", but here's a whole bunch that I personally liked:
Eureka Seven
Mars Daybreak
GUNxSWORD
Vandread (A personal favorite that I wish had a third season.)
RahXephon
Banner of the Stars
Gurren Lagann
And I don't know how good this one is as I just now found it, but it looks rather interesting:

Pretty decent. Some "3d animated" scenes in it, but overall a good show.
If you're looking for a Sci-fi / WTF anime, then Speed Grapher is pretty commendable. _____________________________________ Haruhiist since December 2008

I'll also reccomend the Crest/Baner of the Stars, Vandread as well as Planetes, all three are very very good series.
Asides from that, Legend of the Galactic Heroes(if you like politics) Heroic Age The Third Full Metal Panic Mnemosyne(second half is science fiction, but do NOT watch it in front of even mildly sensitive people :) Gundam 00 Macross Frontier Cowboy Bebop Dennou Coil Trigun(some science fiction elements) Steam boy(steampunk)

...You know, I never did watch Crest. Didn't even know it existed until about half way through Banners first or second season, and at that point enough flash-backs had happened for me to pretty much piece it together.
But yest, start with Crest if possible.

Yeah, I've seen those, pretty good IMO.
To the rest: thanks everyone for the suggestions so far!
I hadn't seen "Memories" yet, and the animation in that was excellent (from a technical and art perspective) and the story telling was really good as well.
Blane- while I've seen Blassreiter, I agree that it's a good recommendation. The 3D animation in it is very well done IMO, particularly for a TV series (vs. a feature film). The story and character development isn't half bad either. I've seen Speed Grapher as well and it has some pretty decent animation in it too.
Content aside, Mnemosyne has really good animation and art and it's storyboarded really well as the shot construction is well put together. -

Edited by: Reiisha on 14/06/2010 01:38:52 Cowboy Bebop has already been mentioned and would be my first suggestion if you want scifi. It's kinda grungy though.
Scrapped Princess is a very interesting take on the whole thing, it downplays the scifi element a bit but it's worth it :)
Martian Successor Nadesico is something i've seen a long time ago - Worth a watch, though it's very tongue-in-cheek most of the time.
.hack (dot hack) is a pretty good one. MMO anime!

Other than already mentioning Cowboy Bebop, as a fantastic one.
Vandread is good, but it's a little cutsie. So be prepared for that.
Other than that I'll just list a few random ones I guess:
Outlaw Star - one of the best ones I've seen Blue Submarine No. 6 - CG combined with Anime. Only like 6 episodes. Post apocalyptic. Blue Gender - Not sure if I've seen all of this. It's decent. Starship Troopers: Roughnecks - It is CG, not anime. However, it's good if you can stomach very early CG.
Will add more if any come to mind.
