I've got a mining character up and coming and I am starting to grow weary of the nasty yields im getting. What's the best way for a solo miner to go about working on his standing with the mining corps? I've got enough combat skills to do most missions up to level 3, but i'd rather just do what i'm good at and skip all the ship fitting and amunition buying that I don't need in the long run. Is there a trick im missing to getting a decent standing without a lot of combat misison grinding?

Since you are a miner you can probably fly a hauler of some sort so you could do courier missions.
Agents in the following divisions will give you courier missions like 80+% of the time; accounting, archives, manufacturing, production and storage.
But I am not sure how good is standing gain from these as I haven't done any in a long time. ---

With the exception of R+D agents (who don't really give you missions in the traditional sense), all agents will eventually give you a kill mission. You can reduce the amount however, by selecting the right ones. In the following list, the lower you go, the more kill missions you get:
Archives Production Accounting Manufacturing Storage Distribution Mining Financial Marketing
All others give more than 50% kill missions.
Standing gains for courier missions are not that good (little risk = little reward), but mining missions can be very rewarding - some of my L3 mining missions give me about 1mil ISK and 1000LP. However, these missions can be done quickly, so you get storyline (good faction standings boost) missions more quickly.
One other word of advice - when chosing the corp to work for, make sure you can access their refining stations. I made the mistake once of trying to get refining standings for a corp, only to find their only refining station was out in losec.

Thanks for the tips. I've already done my homework on the few corps i'd like to boost standing with. I tried to target two major corps (who's refineries were both accessable and not far from my trading sites) in my home region as well as one in some adjacent areas where I move from time to time when prices shift.
I've started running some courier and mining missions for one of the corps, definitely seems like i'll have to locate a storyline agent in that corp to make an efficient time of it. Presently, with lvl2 and 3 couriers, i'm making a measily 0.1 to 0.3 standing gain per mission (most on the low end), though they do go quickly compared to lvl 3 combats (at least with my combat skills).
The mining missions offer a wee bit more for my effort, but the lvl2's (all that is avalible in terms of mining agents at present) seem quite annoying. Roids clustered around a HUGE collidable object that i need to navigate around in my mining barge and/or set multipul waypoints for prior to mining with a shuttle/frig. Quite a pain. My mates suggested I get a mining cruiser or frig to get them done faster, but the amount being asked for pushes the limits of their capacity. I suppose I can outfit a cruiser or something specifically for this task, but it seems easier to just run the couriers instead. Hopefully the lvl3-4 mining missions are a diffirent story.
One thing I forgot to ask, what is the optimal standing for refining? I believe i saw a post suggesting it was only 6.9 (iirc) rather than a full 10 (which would be a monumental task indeed.
Thanks again. -Minnie

I think you need standing of 6.67 at a 50% yield station. And the following skills; Refining V, Refinery Efficiency IV and relevant ore processing skill I. ---

Yikes, i think i neglected to account for station yield. Just noticed one of my primary bases has a 40% yield. =/ I suppose that means more points in a particular ore processing skill?

At 40% station you should still be able to achieve 100% refine with 5/5/4 skills and the 4% implant or 5/5/5 skills without the implant.
Edit: I'm not 100% sure though. Maybe someone else can confirm this? ---

That's correct
40% station needs 5/5/5 or 5/5/4+implant to get 100% 35% station needs 5/5/5+implant to get 100%
About the mining missions - just jet can them. I've never had a problem with flippers on mining missions, and it makes it a heck of a lot easier. Just fit your hauler with a tractor beam and afterburner to pick the cans up at the end.

You need a standing of 6.67 or higher to remove the corp tax (the "We Take" amount), regardless of the station equipment yield.
Skills at 5/5/5 will get you 100% at a 40% station, 5/5/4 will get you 99.4%, so the 1% H40 implant would be sufficient.

You really should aim for a corp that has 50% base yields. This allows you to get away with 5/5/1 skills.
When you consider that the skill you need at level 1 is actually 1 skill for each of the specific ores you regularly process AND scrapmetal processing. That level 1 requirement is so much more attractive compared to level 4. (I know you need ore processing skills at 4 for T2 crystals, but I like the ability to refine ANYTHING my corp mates choose to have refined).
and btw: 6.67 is the correct standing for zero tax regardless of the station yield. Personally, I'd recommend finding a corp that offers both a 50% yield refinery AND medical facilities - that way you can grind up to 8.0 standings on the same corp and get jump clone access as well. ______________________ Agony Unleashed Home of the PvP University |

Edited by: Umega on 11/06/2010 01:30:32 5/4/1 with 50% for ore. 5/5/1 for modules (I believe).
Altho I'd recommend 5/5 and if it is within your reason to do so and do modules too. Mineral prices are slowly seeming to stablize.. soon is a good time to set up buy orders for the low meta/refine fodder modules that are still seeded through wrecks. They will be hitting their lowest value when the mineral market bottoms out. So buy buy buy.. wait for when minerals rebound, or crunch numbers to try to figure how high they will eventually hit.. melt.. put up minerals on sell.. accumlate mass potential profit from refining/repro.
