I'm in a lvl 4 worlds collide mission against Serpentis and Guristas, and I'm in the first room shooting serpentis.
Aggro them fine, then launch my drones. After a while, they drop their target on me and start shooting the drones.
I always thought wormhole Sleepers did this, and not the general rats in highsec. Is it normal for them to retarget like that, or did they get bored of me shooting at them and decided to take out their frustrations on my drones, or did EVE update something I was unaware of?

I recall that the Serpentis frigs in the first room will target your drones, though I cannot recall the Guristas doing that. By the way, you don't have to kill those frigs for the gate to unlock (unless they've changed something very recently). Snipe the BS/BC targets, and that's all that you really need to do.

This was near the very start, even before I've gone through one of the two gates. I'm choosing serpentis side, approach, aggro them comfortably, think I can go back to the gate and sit on it while I tank and shoot them down at leisure.
All of a sudden they're not coming at me, going back 100km away from the gate (and out of range), still targetting.
Okay, so I approach again and they approach me. I launch my drones. After a short while, I notice the BS rats aren't targetting me anymore and I was losing the drones.
Only question I'm asking is: do lvl 4 mission rats actually retarget?

Sorry, I should have been more specific. I think the answer to your question is "yes", the rats will retarget your drones. And the rats are leashed, so they won't chase you forever, and will eventually turn around (while still firing at you, as you've seen).
Edit: the vast majority of L4 rats will not do this retargeting. You aggro, you launch drones, and the drones will be safe.

Ok, on the leashed rats. Do they continue not orbiting you even if you get within 'threat' range, and you're directly firing at them like normal rats would?

IIRC the rats go out from their beginning position they're orbiting only a certain distance, then return. Once they're back, they run the aggro AI cycle again and aggro what is next around, which is usually the drones. -------- All I want is a better mankind.

As the poster said above, the NPCs in WC's first room have a special ruleset.
Their bounties are lowered to prevent exploiting, their allowed distance off their starting point is limited (again, to prevent kite-exploiting).
So, if you kite them too far from their starting point, they reset and get back (those who played other MMOs: it's the same as when you pull a mob too far and it quickly returns back in its starting point).
Once they are fully arrived back at "home", their AI is reset and so they target what's closest to them again, usually it's your drones.

on the Sansha/Angels version of WC, the Sansha in the 2nd room will retarget and kill drones even when you are showing that you have all the aggro
i've run it 20 times at least in the last month and that's happened on 3 or 4 of them.
the problem with the first room is that the rats are chained to their starting point so they go back and forth and once they go far enough away from you to untarget you they then move back and often aggro your drones instead of re-targeting you. Seen that happen plenty of times too
over all it is not a very good mission for drone boats

I just sit on the gate and snipe them with sentries...couldn't be easier.

Atleast the Angels in the first room of worlds collide retarget in the angel/sansha version. Usually in worlds collide I leave my drones in till last. You don't need to kill the frigs in the first room to access the gate.

This has been happening for a long time. I just figured if you are out of the frig range but your drones aren't, they will shoot your drones.

There are also some awesome bugs that happen to. Like you can be right at the point they orbit all the time and they will constantly retarget your drones. There was even a time where they refused to aggro me at all as I was burning through the ships and I had no drones out.

Rats have always retargeted in the first room of WC that I know of. I simply use a sniper fitted BS to pop them from long range, because of their "leash" they rarly get close enough to do much damage anyhow. ____________________________________________ When going to a party with wine, women, and song.
