The PI factories keep producing even if the destination route is full. Unlike something like a mining laser that stops if full, the factory dumps the product, grabs more raw materials and does a new cycle. It runs till the mats are gone, never producing anything.

Edited by: Judas Yanakov on 16/06/2010 16:39:33 Use a storage facility buffer. I route everything to storage and then onto the next tier, that way leftovers dont get wasted. The answer is ALWAYS 42.

Oh sure, I can buffer everything, or they could stop the factory like a simple mining laser does.
That we can work around things like this, or like losing mats in half full unstarted factory runs doesn't make it correct design.
PI is really rough, it could have used another month in development.

Well actually storage is about half as much m3 as the launchpad. Everything should be routed through the launch pad because it has the most space.
The mechanics are dependent on your setup.
I would be nice to get a notification in the planet tab of the science and industry window. Ideally I would like to have a macro management and a micro management system.
Macro which would allow for restarting cycles quickly and micro for adjusting production connections and changing routes making it more efficient.

+1 would streamline things a LOT

You'd end up with all your factories depleting at different times, would be a nightmare to administer.

I've not found that to be an issue as long as there is some extra product in storage for a buffer.

Don't use a storage facility at all.......
A launchpad and storage facility use the same powergrid yet a launchpad has twice the storage amount of a storage facility. The launchpad does require more CPU however.
But.......currently I can't get my setups to even reach over 50% cpu, so that is not a limiting factor, powergrid however is.
So, as long as cpu allows it: use launchpads instead of storage facilities.
