So for those of you who have read the Empyrean Age novel and were able to see that Home Guard uses Combat MTAC's you know where this is going.
For those of you who say "Screw fiction, I'm here to play," Let me explain. MTAC's are Mechanized Torso-Actuated Chassis. They're mechanized exo-suits. See link to Eve Wiki: http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/MTAC In the novel, Kaalakiota's military branch, Home Guard, uses them as combat mechs and weapons platforms.
So the bottom line is: We capsuleers are funding these Dust wars when they come out. We can fund them tanks, fighters, dropships, jeeps, the whole shebang.
I want to be able to outfit my mercs with a squad of Combat MTACs.
Balancing crap can be sorted later. Its just that these seem too good to leave out of the game, and have actually sat pretty common in the EVE cannon (ships are assembled with them, unloaded and loaded with them, parts are manufactured by them, they're used in mining outposts, and also in NPC military forces)
TL;DR: I WANT EM!
post your thoughts. ------------------ I'm not sure if my eyes are actually bleeding, or if it's merely my brain bleeding out through my eye sockets, but either way, it hurts to read what you just wrote |

Depends on how its balanced. If infantry and/or vehicles can take one out with teamwork and guile then it would be a welcome addition.

Also Tr Werner vet.
BFRs where not a bad idea, they where a good idea implemented in a overly complex fashion that eclipsed everything that made planet side good and changing the game way too much, too quickly that alienated long standing customers.
I dare say the same would have happened if they had implemented MAX suits (dust needs MAX suits) half way through the games life.

NC Markov, the BFRs where made of pure failure.
that said something like the mechs in Avatar would fit in better to Dust.

Didn't like Bifs, but could have lived with them, had the cheating not gotten outta hand.
I did have a love for mossie dropping on lone Bif's with AT and jammers though, and sniping them with the scout rifle into their systems over and over was always funny as hell. ------------------------

nobody says mecha have to be all-powerful. it's just a vehicle, and each should have a purpose. besides, the only thing that keeps mecha going is cool factor. look at Heavy Gear for a reasonable combined arms approach. it can be done.
for example, it could be best defender unit. not very fast, but maneuverable, with jump capability. it would suffer on open ground, and shine in ambushes. ________________________________ : Forum Bore 'Em : Foamy The Squirrel - [jedi handwave] "There is no spoon." |

Well ok I likely will still buy it even though it is console only. But I still wish they would have a pc release.
Originally by: EliteSlave If anyone has ever played planetside from inception to the point where they introduced the mechsuits will realize this is a fail to bring in
Beta tested planetside and it was a blast. Was no longer playing by the time the mechs were introduced. I was recently considering it again but all I keep hearing is how mechs ruined it.

Edited by: Aldarica on 22/06/2010 11:34:32 Truth is... mecha would terribly suck in real combat. They're stupidly tall, fragile and unstable with their high center of mass and those two long robotic legs. Any armoured vehicle designed in similar fashion as modern tanks (only bigger) would **** them. If they're not blown away to pieces with first hit they would be certainly knocked out of balance and thrown down to ground.
Also I wouldn't want to drive one into the mud or sand

I agree with that part - they are kinda cool. I'm just saying that whole mecha concept is so flawed that such fragile yet complicated machines would never be built in real world.

Not to mention the walking harvester (which, granted, never reached the market).
Originally by: Aldarica Also I wouldn't want to drive one into the mud or sand
Actually, mud, sand and other soft and unstable surfaces is exactly why you'd need legs: to spread the weight around and put it in different spots where the surface is slightly more solid, and not rip the whole ground up in the process. It all depends on what you use as "feet" (which in a more advanced scenario can be exchanged to match the surface you'll be facing). ——— “If you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡… you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.” — Karath Piki |

If they put that silly thing down on tracks, add more mobility, armour and firepower then it might compete with modern IFVs or maybe even MBTs. But then, we couldn't call it mecha any more, eh?

Ever heard of Ground pressure? I wonder how would GP look like with one of those heavy machines standing on two relatively small feet...
Originally by: Tippia Not to mention the walking harvester (which, granted, never reached the market).
Of course it has never reached the market. Why would anyone buy that clunky, slow, easy to stuck and probably pretty expensive machine over the simple and effective tracked one?

Yes, which is exactly why the walking harvester was developed: to provide a different (controllable, and even alterable) pressure pattern to treads or tracks.
