My account is like one week old. I already knew not to grab any cans floating around no matter what they might say "free items" "Stuff for new players" etc. I was excited to start making some money mining and set up shop far away from others in 1.0 space. Then came along a player that wants to steal my cans, target me, and follow me from place to place giving me a hard time. I never play on pure PvP servers, it's not my style. I just want to do my own thing and be left alone. Why does Eve let other players do this anywhere they like? How would you like to be brand new to the game and the other players are always trying to trick you into some way they can destroy you? That's why this game sticks at 35K and doesn't grow. Man I feel so welcome here...not.

I don't understand are you asking for suggestions to avoid this sort of thing? or simply complaining about how this game isn't like WoW?

EVE Online is fundamentally a PvP game.
Quote: How would you like to be brand new to the game and the other players are always trying to trick you into some way they can destroy you?
We were.
I had my jetcan flipped twice, and some ore stolen the second time. Both times I left the area and returned in an Industrial to take back my ore when the coast was clear (risky).
After the second time, I moved to a 0.5 system that had lots to mine and few people. When I went scouting for a new home in a shuttle, I found a Veldspar asteroid that seemed to be the size of a small moon, so that attracted me (back then Veldspar was king).
My rule of thumb: If there are more people in local than asteroid belts in the system, move to another system!
I now own 3 Hulks, 2 Mackinaws, an Orca, a Rorqual, 2 Charons, and assorted other ships thanks in large part to mining.
Don't take losses personally. It's just a game.

This. General whining doesn't belong in the New Citizens Q&A section. That Q&A means questions and answers just in case you didn't know it. If you have questions, we will try to answer them and give advice. If you just wan't to whine and cry, take it to the general forum.

EVE only has one server and it's a PVP one. That's kind of the point.
So you want to know how to solve your problem or are you just here to complain?
Malcanis' Law: Whenever a mechanics change is proposed on behalf of "new players", that change is always to the overwhelming advantage of richer, older players. |

Since I am a new player, why not put it here? Where else should I post it? I tried WoW for a week, way too simple. You missing my point, it's not the game it's the attitude of the players. There seems to be a large core of jerks in this game that just want to make the new players feel un-welcome. Am I wrong in this? And yes, what are your suggestions to avoid this?

There isn't a large core of jerks or anything they just congregate in areas. Just move to a less trafficked system and enjoy the peace and quiet.

It is not so much that they want to make you feel un-welcome. Rather, they seem to enjoy the suffering of others, and this game allows them to inflict suffering. The world in general is full of people like that, and video games that allow them to vent their anti-social tendency are naturally going to attract them. Originally by: Tyrion Harcon And yes, what are your suggestions to avoid this?
Try following Tau's suggestion: Originally by: Tau Cabalander My rule of thumb: If there are more people in local than asteroid belts in the system, move to another system!
I would also suggest that you think of those types of players as another form of NPC: they just make the game a bit more interesting, but are easy enough to deal with once you are familiar with them.
There is an old joke: Two guys were hiking in the forest when they met a bear. One guy askes the other: "What do we do now?" "Run for it!", the other responds. "We can't out run a bear," states the first. "I don't need to out run the bear, I just need to out run you." answers the second.
You don't need to do much to deal with griefers other than make yourself less interesting to grief than someone else.

EVE is growing faster than most other MMOs, also steadily.
And 2 weeks ago we had 60,2k players or so online on TQ, breaking records for people online on a single server.

I've been lucky enough in the month or two I've been playing to have largely avoided players like the OP is referring to. Then again, I'm generally paranoid and I also don't usually go places alone.
This is an MMO. While you can do things on your own, the whole point is to interact with others, otherwise why not just play a single player game somewhere?

EVE is a pure PvP universe, with some rules to make it moderately fair. If you don't like that fact, you might have the wrong attitude for the game. That's ok, EVE isn't just for everybody. I hope you do change your mind though, this game can be so rewarding, no other MMO comes even close. And what you dislike right now about it is EXACTLY the thing that makes it awesome.
Quote: I just want to do my own thing and be left alone.
Find some deserted area of space with very few people in it. There are plenty of those around. Although, they're usually deserted for good reason, there's not much interesting stuff to do there.
Quote: Why does Eve let other players do this anywhere they like?
Because that's how the developers envisioned it from the very start. At the very start of the game, anybody could just KILL everybody else with very little punishment whatsoever. In fact, they keep making concessions on a regular basis when they feel the complaints are somewhat justified, so it's harder and harder to annoy other people every passing year.
Quote: How would you like to be brand new to the game and the other players are always trying to trick you into some way they can destroy you?
We all were that newbie player when we started. We got used to it. We learned to either avoid or enjoy it. Otherwise we wouldn't still be playing. In fact, my very first trial account, near the end of it (I wasn't going to activate it because of RL issues), f couple of days before it expired, I got into my trusty Rifter and started roaming lowsec and killing gate NPCs... where a nice little Ferox invited me to his gang, gang-warped me in the middle of nowhere and proceeded to kill then pod me, at the same time explaining to me why the things I did were a mistake. Did I go emorage on him or anything like that ? Nope. I learned a valuable lesson, afterall, which served me well later (even on the same trial account, but on others later again).
Quote: That's why this game sticks at 35k and doesn't grow.
The number of paying accounts is actually closer to 350k nowadays, and there have been over 60k accounts online AT THE SAME TIME not that long ago. The subscriber number has been (more or less) steadily growing, at a nearly linear average rate. No other MMO ever made can claim the same kind of success.

Harassment is just one of the things you have to learn to deal with. A griefer who hangs around 1.0 systems is pretty lame, so, if you let him push you around, you're probably not going to enjoy Eve very much.
I know what it's like. The person who taught me to mine, and was very generous while doing it, decided he didn't like me any more one day. 4 months later, after killing off more than two generations of characters, I managed to drop out of his sight. I'm still hoping it's permanent.

The quote "EvE is essentially a PvP game" says it all.
Who would want to PvP a new player? They don't have anything to take that you couldn't earn yourself quicker. There is no reason to do it other than to harass.
Why do people play EvE? Number one reason is its the only decent space sim.
Very close #2 reason is because its one of the only, if not the only non-carebear games out there. they love to cry "carebear" in EvE but fail to realize there's not a single carebear in eve, because anyone can be pvp'd for a loss if they decide to undock.
Anyway, that's why it happens in EvE. Because other games don't let people harass you like EvE does. they arent strong enough to log onto a game like Wc3 where pvp is equal. They have to harass you, the noob. there is nowhere else to go. This is clearly a signature. |

This game isn't for everyone, it takes a certain kind of testicular fortitude to be successful. Maybe you should try a single player game. I hear the only griefers there are npcs.

I'll give you a hint for peace and quiet (at least when my main was based there). Bring out the Ombey maps. Look for Jita Look for the nearby Gallente space in Sinq Laison Look for Faurent and two jumps further out - there it is... No griefers, no flippers, lots of ore, almost noone in local, commuting distance to Jita ... perfect =)
There *is* a catch though, which I leave for you to find =)
EDIT :: Oh too late , well the advice is still there if anyone wants sanctuary with a catch.

Well apparently there isn't a lot of them then .. :)
Sorry to hear what happened, it's not really representative for a new player's experience though. You could try and move a few systems away or even make a new character, there's a 99% probabilty it won't happen again. And just don't mine in jetcans, no-one does that, it's asking for trouble.

There are two issues here....
1. Eve does contain players who will use any game mechanic to blow up your ship. Learn and survive.
2. You need to understand the word Jettison.

o/ Buh-bye.
EVE is not a game for people who can't rise to a challenge. Go play WoW, or one of the clone army, it'll suit you better. Though you'll have to get used to paying out the nose for each expansion. _

/slaps wrists and reminds himself this is the New Playyers forums.
Seriously, if this got to you then it is probably best to move on. But any other game you find will be a total waste of time compaired to EvE.
Yes; in EVE, you can lose something that took you a lot of time to aquire, thus making it seem like that loss is devastating, which it may be, but that is the true beauty of EVE. You own none of the pixels to begin with, but the adrenaline rush you get when you are about to lose something is what most people in EVE pay for, that and the friends you make. Could you imagine playing a game of chess when every game is a draw and no one loses? Such a bore.

To OP although departed: Using the search function on the forum would be a good place to start looking for answers. Not complaining in local as it feeds the griefer. Anchoring a secure can in the asteroid belt stops can flippers. Taking an industrial around all the roid belts in 1.0 sec space can also be lucrative in picking up unanchored cans from other newbs.

When I'm mining and minding my own business I have a habit of checking who is in system? Are they affiliated with mercs/pirate corp? Who were their former employer? Do they have a low security standings? who do they make contracts out to? Are they affiliated with mercs/pirate corp? Most neut alts will still make contracts out to their main. Then when they fly into your system. Look at the ship are their weapons? Is suspected ship align to your ship? The point is always ask questions. Never let your guard down.

Press charges?
@OP: There are plenty of jerks in this game, just like everywhere else on the internet. The difference is that Eve game mechanics allows them to be more jerkish. You can move to a different system, log off for a bit or just wait them out - they'll eventually get bored.
Meh, sometimes I think 'pvp game' and 'sandbox' is just code for 'lazy' and 'too cheap to hire more GMs.'

I'd pay for Eve expansions if they had lots of new content. The reason they are free is because they aren't worth paying for (kinda like minor updates in other MMOs).
