What follows is not a rant but rather more of a brain dump, please forgive the long read.
I've recently gotten my drake to be able to effectively solo L4 missions and have spent the last few days grinding out isk for plexes and exotic dancers to put into cargo containers (it's not weird, don't judge me). However I ended up getting a cargo mission instead of the normal lucrative combat missions, this sucked but I'd already accepted the mission before reading it and since it only had me go 4 jumps I just decided to buy a Badger MK2 and run it while I played ball with my pup. I'm sure some of you can already see where this is going. Yup I brought up the market, sorted by price, saw the ship ran between 400 to 700 thousand isk, then sorted by jump distance.
Oh what luck there are a lot of sell orders in system for 500 to 650 thousand isk!
Ok pup, go get the ball! Go get it!
I'll I have to do is click here.
Good girl! Ok go get it again.
Right click there. Buy now.
Oh you're such a good puppy!
Yes I'm sure I want to buy this.
Ok, go fetc.... wait... did that 500 thousand or 500 million?
Crap!
Yes friends, I spent 500million isk to buy a badger mark 2. You know how this scam works. You buy up all the industrial ships in the area of a level 4 mission agent, then put a bunch of different sell orders up in the station of the L4 agent so when the sucker sorts by jump they only see you're sell orders and if they arn't paying attintion they won't notice the three extra zeros on all the sell orders and next thing you know, you're a half a billion isk richer.
So let this be a warning to the new and a reminder to the old, don't be a victim of distracted market browsing.
This message was brought to you by the foundation for Improving Pod Pilot Wallets.
IPPW: Encouraging CCP to expand the pilot wallet interface to include sub accounts for the better management of personal isk since 2010.

You know that little thing that says "are you sure you want to pay 10,000% over average cost?". Yea, read that, and always double check any market transaction you are making.
Also, you can set min/max prices in the market settings tab.
But yea, if you aren't paying attention in eve, you'll get suicide ganked/scammed/ect, it's the nature of the game.

The really cool part is that the one putting up that Badger for a ridiculous price isn't the one getting the isk. The sellorder with the lowest price sold that badger for you, at YOUR indicated (500 mil) price :P

Actually most of the times this is not the case and it's just a wannabe scammer who is as clueless as he hopes his customers will be. Or someone trying to transfer isk with a trial account while not knowing how things work.

2 things saved me so far from this 1) i can most of the time read 2) if i cant, i at least have the (still enabled) popup saying somethign like "warning! this item is like 5928% over the market average, are you sure you want to buy/sell ?"

It must be one of those new gold platted Amarr badgers.
Anyhoo, sort by price is the way to go.
As for scams...
when I first started out in EVE I accepted a 150 mill collateral courier contract to deliver to a player owned outpost.
So after surviving the trip thru nullsec, I found I couldn't dock. The item i was shipping: A small empty container.
Nowhere in the game does it say that you may not be able to dock at a player owned outpost. That is a major exploit of public contracts.
Lesson learned.

me neither.
It's not like any form of deception is involved - you get the good you wanted to buy at exactly the price it is listed for (and you even get a nice warning by the client that you might overpay).

Technically...nothing wrong with the transaction. Warnings were bypassed and the transaction completed. What it does do is prey on players lack of attention or distraction in the transaction:
5000000 50000000 500000000 5000000000
...when looked at quickly can easily be confused for 500,000 or 50 million.
It is a legal con in the game because the buyer is at fault.

Yeah it would be nice to know from before hand if you are allowed to dock or not in stations at 0.0, though its genarally no unless you're blue on the alliance owning the station. AFAIK that particular scam still works.

I agree that you should always sort by price.
Tricking someone into paying more they intended IS a scam.
For those who disagree this isn't a scam. You followed the rules, and didn't break the EULA, but in the end you manipulated a market mechanic to create a buying enviroment where an impatient mission runner might buy at a ridiculously high price. Because you manipulated the market window so lower reasonably priced units were deliberately not visible, it's a scam.

So tell me, at what price level does the status of a market order change from "overpriced" to "scam"? 10% deviation from average? 30%? 50%? What about 0.0 regions where it's hard to get to, do you factor in opportunity cost to those? How about the old market orders after a massive price fluctuation? Does the forgotten sell order that remains unchanged after a 200% drop in average market price count as a scam in your book?
