You're amazed that Eve players assumed a basic level of competence at CCP. I doubt the point you are thus making was quite the one you intended. Yes, it's a complex task, but CCP's inability to come up with a realistic ETC is simply not good enough.
I haven't read every post in this topic, but the majority of the complaints are not, as you seem to think, about the length of time the changes are taking but the overrun. If CCP had originally given an ETC of 23:00, you would be making a valid point. They didn't. You aren't.

@ Ace - yeah my bad dude :P , but still I wasn't even expecting the site up on the deadline. There's a hell of a lot of unplugging and plugging back in to do with a setup like the eve servers.

Heh some of you guys really need to relax and chill out a little bit. What's the big deal if you lose one or two days of internet spaceships? If that's your biggest problem in life then I'd say you actually don't have nothing to worry about.

I hope they decide a goodwill measure of some sort. Micromanaging all the people whose Q's dried out because of misleading server estimates is perhaps too much, but a blanket 1 day credit? Well, they probably won't. But it'd be nice to see a gesture like this for once.

oh this is just gold. I need to get more popcorn. Although i agree with many responses about ccp setting a huge dt window for themselves next time. You can all keep dreaming about being reimburst. Personally i expected this delay and set a lonnnng skill. Keep up the good work ccp. Oh i cant wait to read the forums when the servers go down for normal dt 2moro. Thats if they get them up anytime soon.

try to understand about moving this stuff.
1-unplug all 2-move all 3-plug all 4-try to figure out which cord is not plug at the right place 5-Edit this post to tell people server is back online
It take time, YES They always tell server will be back at UTC X-hour, YES It's often reported, YES
But who know the work it represent to move those kind of server? Not much of us.
For anything else --> MasterCard XD
fly safe guys hummmm well when we will be able to go back IG :P

well ccp are not known for their timekeeping in general but still, the ammount of work that has to be done to acheive something like this is rather epic, but surely ccp you know that when you get an estimate of the duration of a down time to at least double it?

You have to pull each rack out, install power, network, do your cross links, hook up no less than 4 cables per server and cut your hands on sharp metal edges. This isn't "A" server, it is a cluster of servers. It isn't like you just move one unit and your done. Now keep in mind they are also overhauling their existing network as well. Frankly, doing it under 72 hours seems like a dream.
Kudos to CCP on this epic attempt to fix known issues :)
And any halfway intelligent person would have had the hardware already installed and warmed up, ready to load the current version of eve and the database. Only halfwits try to do a major server move on this scale the same time they pull the old server.
And only someone who has no interest in keeping their job would throw away millions of dollars just to move some servers by buying all new hardware for a 1 day job.
And FYI it's not a single server...

You have to have been idiot savants or extremely naive to think that this was going to go off without a hitch. Quit whining, go outside, go to the pub, whatever- it's your own idiotic fault that you wasted a day waiting for the server to come back up.
Personally, I'm back to listening to some of EveU's classes. They'll be back up when they are and... shock... there will be other issues to resolve after that. That's just the way things go with these types of moves, in my past experience.
It's a great game and a day or two lost for infrastructure upgrade is no big thing.
Damn Right!!! This post and Zen's are classic examples of us few gamers who actually look forward to enhanced stability. So it's taking longer than expected, don't be surprised as this type of move is more than the sum of their parts.

Hi i have no idea what this server move is about and what it is suppose to achieve. And i couldnt care less. CCP made an estimate that the move takes 6 Hours. Now we are at 3 times the estimated time. Sorry that doesnt sound like professional it to me.
Thats just inline with storylines that were meant for lvl5 and got distributed to lvl2 mission runners. Or the boot.ini deaster.
Remember this :
http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1329024
For me it comes down to trust in what CCP anounces. And if the vets in this thread are not even considering a timely end of the DT i would assume there is no trust left.
Might be no problem for CCP. But as someone working in the IT field i would be quite upset if our customers would voice such views.
At least i would review how my project management comes up with projected timelines.

It is very feasabile to plan changes like this that go off exactly as planned or even to no effect at all to the users. The problem is that more you re-enforce the plan(extra parts, redundants systems, duplicates, lab testing ect), the costlier it becomes. This is an internet spaceship game--its not a network for the police, a hospital, or for the world food program where people die during downtime. The appropriate preperation for an upgrade for this kind of service should weigh heaviliy on ecomonic coniderations not on availibility. The game has to be affordable.
Still, even when the mega-corps that I support in RL spend millons to get it right, its not uncommon for it to just go badly and extra down time can't be helped. Its the nature of the IT/Operations beast.
Patience folks, data center moves are incredibly expensive and complex and on the whole, CCP does a really good job of keeping the cluster up and chuggin.

I have a slight impression of you guys at CCP just doing random guessing when it comes to timelines.
That'd be fine for me, if communicated.
But: Shoving wrong data into customer faces over and over again is not fine at all!
Just setting new times in EVE motd message over and over again without any excuse is insulting, too.
As you're obviously having fun wasting my time having me read outdated twitter messages of yours and pointing me into the facebook desert. I'll probably remove all my bug reports reported so far as soon as possible and cease helping.
A company obviously not dedicated to deliver quality of service is not worth any spare time effort of mine.
You might learn the lesson of what it does cost to loose a supporting paying customer one day, telling his story here or there.
But I doubt it, as you do not even seem capable of having some random basic website of your own run 24/7. Some local craftsmen do better jobs at having their website run 24/7 than you "professional cluster management guys at CCP".

On the bright side, the new forum seems to be holding up under the increased emo rage posting quite well, there does not appear to be a local node failure on this thread yet. With this rate of bandwidth wasting whine, large fleet battles should be wonderful.
Two pencils, sharpened to a razor-like point, are my only defense. |
