So a couple of months ago, I started running lvl 4 missions. It was great that I finally had the skills and the standing and the ship. Not everything went according to plan all the time, as the fit for my ship was still a work in progress. I had to warp out a couple of times and completely screwed up a couple of missions.
And then of course the fit got better at what it needed to do. I fly a T2 fitted Dominix now and lvl4's have taken on a pretty familiar workflow. Warp in, get agro, deploy drones, make sure the drones don't get agro, go read a book.
Now, I never really 'got into' mission running, as it seemed far too formulaic and static. I'm more of an industry guy, tbh.
Some missions are a bit more dynamic, where you have to manage the drones aggression carefully to avoid sh*tstorms, but most are pretty dry.
So I mean, yeah, it's a drone boat, and drone boats probably aren't the most entertaining ships to fly. As we speak, I'm cross training to get myself into a Raven. I suppose my question to you guys is, can I expect anything different? If I find lvl4's to be not entertaining in the least now, are they gonna get better if I fly a Raven?
tl;dr: Do you guys find lvl4's fun? If so, why?

Fun? Dear god no. Reliable, easy, and 'safe' way to make ISK? Yes.
I fly an abomination of an arty maelstrom fit doing level 4s against the Angel Cartel.
Warp into pocket -> AB away from rats -> Load Depleted Uranium, snipe -> Zoom back towards the gate, load EMP -> Finish off rats on the way -> Next pocket
Keep a few Warrior IIs to zoom out and **** frigates approaching, keep a few Valkyrie IIs to take care of any rogue cruisers, have a shield booster for any unexpected damage, and that's about it. Zzzzzz. A droneboat would be an exciting improvement for me because I wouldn't spend so much time traveling around :/
Missions are not fun, I sort of go into a haze and space out, and when my my concious mind returns I'm a few hundred million ISK richer and too much time has gone by.
Seriously considering exploration to relieve that horribad boredom of aquiring ISK.
Also I'm a baddie pirate who then immediately goes and loses this earned ISK in several glorious and expensive explosions.

boring yes.
but good money, true.
Missile boats are great for lv4's especially raven, its variants and tengu.
As a current and hopeuflly not too much longer raven pilot, I Warp in and rarely have to move in most missions. Tank is barely used most of the time, and when it is the cap booster is win.

Is going to work fun? For a very small minority it is, and all power to them. Most of us work so we can do the thing we really find fun. Such is the same with level 4 missions.

Try ships that only barely make it. When in a maelstrom, I won't have much fun or effort. When doing the same mission in a Cynabal, things get interesting, when doing the same mission in an ishkur, I might lose the ship, such is life. ------------------------------------- I like to fly around and shoot stuff. |

Try shooting all the triggers at the same time in a Gone Beserk. That might get the juices running. Or actually running a courier through low sec rather than declining them. Or having a go in a Wolf. -----

^^ This. I've run L4s in a single-rep/gank-fitted Diemost, where I certainly can pump out an awful lot of DPS, but where I have to actually fly the thing to make sure my transversal is up against all targets in the field; have to make sure that any webbing frigates are disposed of early (and woe betide if they're both webbers and triggers!), and where the actual destruction of the rats is the easy part ù getting into a position to do any damage (without dying yourself) is where the manual input is needed.
Granted, it's horribly inefficient, so it's not something you'd want to do if you're just looking at the ISK/h, but it sure spices things up a bit. ——— “If you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡… you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.” — Karath Piki |

A Raven is probably the least fun mission ship ever, and it's pretty terrible dps too. Well maybe a Drake is worse. If you want engagement you need to fly something close-range fit that does absurd DPS and has a big chance of exploding if it goes wrong, and bonus if it costs a lot.
I enjoy Blockade, or at least I enjoy Angel Blockade, and there's a couple of other missions I've forgotten that I enjoy but obviously not that much. Usually though they're just something to fill a bit of time & top up the finances, or mostly now to figure out basics of how a ship or weapon system handles as you're in a predictable environment.

i find it relaxing to come home from work and watch the pretty explosions for a while. got a pretty good corp chat to fill in the time spent moping over to the next gate. guess i'm one of the few that enjoys doing missions for themselves.

Except games are MEANT to be fun. At least, they're meant to be in my book.
Frankly, it really is a pretty damn poor sign when people are comparing aspects of a game to work.

90% of mission runners are grinding lvl4s for the ISK to have fun with later in PVP.
Much akin to grinding away at work in RL for RL cash to go nuts with at the weekend.
I can see the link, although it is somewhat tenuous.
Not to mention the fact that any thread in which internets spaceships are compared to RL = epic fail.

Missions are for making isk. Isk is for using to have fun.
Missions are only fun while your skills are low. When you lack the in game SP the human element becomes more important, meaning you have fun.
However, when your ingame SP catch up, the human factor isn't as important, you are reduced to a George Jetson button pusher. This is why missions are boring - they are too easy once you reach a tipping point of skills.
I suppose this must be my sig. I'll do something cool with it eventually. |

Mission running is like non-drinkers. the drunkards will always question their no-life's, and non-social life.
I love seeing my isk/hour steadily increase even when playing long hours.
Ive been using my same old CNR, same old skills, but i can still slowly push my isk/hour past 50m although i started with a mere 25-30. now going close to 60m / hour just by making myself more and more efficient, while still being able to chat with friends and corpmates and help channel.
This is an MMO afterall. Same as others, is about self improvement. be it pvp, pirating, pve, mining, whatever you are doing.
And the rewards? shiny ships , better modules, good times.
Fun has no linear formula to any variables. Its subjective beyond the rational understanding.

Edited by: Mael Sechnaill on 30/06/2010 21:23:06 L4's are fun when you do them in PvP fitted ships, as a small gang, in lowsec. Or were those L5's ?

maybe you should get you and your corp together and try and fight the whole thing in T1 cruisers for the difficulty in the fact you are flying cruisers instead of battleships and BCs

L4 missions in a Domi is as exciting as watching your dog sleep. Ok, even that is more exciting. So, go the next step, go isthar. Depending on the mission (lots of webbers), it can get interesting.
But even that gets boring after a while. So now I invite corpies that are running lvl 3s to come and run the l4 with me. He gets full share of the bounties and mission reward, plus I get more excitement trying to keep them alive, and they learn more about the game and have more fun too!
This game really has to be played with other people to have fun. Mining is mind numbing, but mining with friends can be pretty fun too.

Being a newb who has been playing for a month, this saddens me. I'm running Level 2's and I'm bored to death already.

No.
Missioning in the abstract can be fun for a brief while as you advance step by step through the upgrade path to flying an absurdly expensive marauder. After getting there, however, the missions in and of themselves are terribly boring. L5's are even worse than L4's because low sec pretty much short circuits the temporary entertainment you can find in building 'the ultimate mission-running ship'.
W-Space is pretty much the only part of EvE that has somewhat interesting (repeatable) NPC interactions.

I like to eat pizza. But, eating the same old pizza everyday gets stale fast.
So, I only eat the same pizza because I'm hungry and can't find anything better to eat.
Mining is boring and less profitable.
Trading goods is all fine and dandy but who wants to sit at screen all day and best your competitors by .01 every 5 minutes x the amount of items you're selling. Can you say insane.
HAHA PI, if I wish to send out a trace disruptor by bouncing the signal around the world several times I wouldn't be bothered with playing eve now would I.
Pirating and gate camping all day, no thanks. There are days you don't even get one stupid noob in to jump through the gates.
So, all you're left with is pvp. That cost lost of isk. How to get that isk. You have to spend even more useless time scanning and plexing only to get a **** drop.
Conclusion is eat the crappy pizza and use cheap ships for pvp. To think I have the skills for t2/t3 ships. But, hate the grind to use them. There must be a better way to have fun? Play a different game? It's not out yet... --

No.
Got so bored I started doing lvl 4's in my blaster enyo. That was fun for a cpl days and even that wasn't challenging. Just took forever.
And No to the raven if I must say for the fun factor. I fly all four races BS and right now I'm down with the amarr ships, but then again they are FOTM. rightly so though, good dps, fat tank, No ammo load time.
But i've done lvl 4 missions in all the race bs, It's preference and speed of completion I'd say. They all have good and bad. Though 8 guns is always good.

Level 4's Probably as fun as mining, especially if your trying to earn as much as possible. Salvage, loot and sell.. repeat for several hours. But i shouldnt complain, i regularly make 50mil a night without doing storyline missions

Before I got into drone boats, I used mostly rail fitted gun ships for missions and was usually bored with them. Since I got into using drone boats, and subsequently salvaging as I go along, I actually enjoy the missions now.
I like the fact that the rats are all popping left and right, and I have to work to keep up with the looting and salvaging at the same pace I'm (or really the drones) are killing them.
I can't really explain too well why it feels fun. But for whatever reason, seeing the drones just absolutely shred rats without me even needing to target them, all the while trying to keep up with the salvaging and the various convos in the chat windows is very appealing to me. Call me crazy, I guess, but at least I've found something that, at the very least, gives me a large degree of gaming satisfaction after a long day at work.
