During the recent long downtime, I re-watched the Babylon 5 series. For those of you who never saw it, Babylon 5 is like a space novel which is remarkably like Eve-online should be. In particular, things like the Jump Gates and jump effect match Eve (old jump effect.) Seeing as how this series was made 15 years ago, I'm wondering if it was the inspiration for Eve.
All the episodes are viewable online for free at Watch Babylon 5

Although I don't condone watching things for "free" online when you obviously should be paying for it, I must admit I thought the same. the front of the new Premae ship reminds me alot of the Omega-class destroyers of the Earth Alliance xD

Actually, that's the Warner Brothers website and they made Babylon 5, so its completely legit.
Yeah, the ship types and fleet battles look just like Eve. And I want a Shadow vessel real bad.

Damn it not viewable in the UK :(
Yes there are comparisons that can be made. Jump Gates and stuff. I rather liked the shadow earth vessels that were in the later seasons.

I think this is one of the inspirations for eve and know it has been mentioned before. I have an unopened copy for the Amiga CD32 I keep at home. Cool game with a lot of similar grinds.

Tbh there aren't many similarities between Elite 2 and EVE except that both games are about spaceships. Almost 20 year old Elite 2 features realistic newtonian physics, world is completely seamless, it was possible to land or fly above planets, ships were manually piloted (aka twitch based gameplay) and so on. I was quite disappointed when I found out that EVE doesn't have any of these.

I agree but I think the Centauri are more Akin to the Amarr in racial behavour, with lords and ladies and enslaving ^^ Minbari are probebly Jovians xD

Come now, it's not all from Babylon Five. There's a lot of older works that could probably be said to be the roots of Eve.
Star Flight anyone? That was my first PC game, and well... the combat was definitely similar to Eve, though only 2D. Still, what do you expect on a game that ran on Hercules Monochrome graphics.
I can't think of the name, but there was another sci/fi space game. Sort of a precursor to maybe Mass Effect and Eve in a sense. It was back in the days when games came with a Paragraph book. Anyone remember those?
I'm pretty sure there were other games that could be viewed as roots or helped inspire aspects of Eve.

I've seen references to B5, the Homeworld games, as well as the obvious Elite inspiration.
On the other hand Eve is it's own world when it comes to lore and background. The technical details are just that: details.
