Haven't played Torchlight, so I'll go with that since Titan Quest was pretty terrible. It had some good ideas, but in the end it was just another Diablo clone.

Depends on what you like, both are hack and slash rpgs. Titan Quest has the cool graphics kick ass spells and awesome enemies. But core gameplay is the same for both, and I think I spend equal time on both of them.
The thing that really holds torchlight back is the lack of a cool magic class really, and only 3 classes.
Titan Quest has a demo IIRC so you could try that out first.

I have both and I prefer Torchlight, while both are Diablo clones Torchlight is just way more fun to get in and play I find. Torchlight is only single player though where TQ can be played MP.
In Torchlight you get a familiar too(cat, dog or ferret) who you can equip with some gear and spells and also doubles as a pack mule whom you can send back to town to sell while you continue fighting on. You can also fish in pools you find which yields some neat food buffs for you and your pet. Torchlight also has random maps that generate similar to Diablo unlike TQ which has a completely linear storyline so once you've done it on one character going back through again is exactly the same thing over.
Both games have some great skills and abilities but Torchlight character builds are not as in depth as TQ though. Only 3 classes to choose from in Torchlight (Ranger, Mage, Melee types) but they do have skill trees to work with though. TQ has a male or female character but their path choice is a lot more in depth. You choose between a primary and secondary mix of 6-8 different masteriesp acked with skills and abilities if my memory serves me right. It does take a while to get a decent build going in TQ though so expect to be auto attacking a bit at the beginning of the game which is a little boring. My biggest gripe about TQ is the insane inventory Tetris you have to constantly play and often have to leave lots of loot behind and run back to town to sell. Torchlight has town portals and you can send your pet back to town to sell if you don't want to go yourself which is so handy. Both games can be modded though and Torchlight actually has a better community for that than TQ from what I have seen.
I guess the big deciding factor between them will be the presentation. Torchlight has a cartoon like fantasy approach (turns a lot of people off..."cough" WoW) where TQ has the whole Mythological theme that's more realistic looking. Both the same games really (Diablo clones) so take your pick of what theme appeals to you more if you have to choose one.

Ah Sacred still holds a soft spot in my heart (preferred it over D2). Used to play the first one online, still have an 86 Vamp in hardcore somewhere. Quite a few of my clan moved on to Guild Wars when it was released and I went with them and got hooked there neglecting my Sacred playtime. I did hire Sacred 2 on PS3 but it didn't grab me in the short stint I had with it. Maybe If I can find a cheap PC download of it I might give it another shot.

I'd be tempted to try it but there's no demo for it on Steam and it's priced at US$29, which is much steeper than Titan Quest or Torchlight.

TBFH, both are very shallow. Mindless slashing, nothing else. " The Slayer walks the Earth" style games (a perk from Fallout).
If you're looking for something similar with true content then I recommend Neverwinter Nights, Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale in all their flavors.
Perhaps even Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura.
Diablo I/II are also quite mindless. They're popular only for two things: - they were very good at the time they were released (graphics and combat system) - they offered weapon upgrades
I could mention the Fallout series but that's sci-fi. -SIG- Ship comparison |
