So im doing well in lvl 4s making isk and earning lps. But i kinda wanna explore lowsec/nullsec. Do some ratting. Im still trying to learn the ropes of pvp but i wanna build a decent bankroll so i dont get disappointed when i lose a ship. So here is my dilemma. I have tech 2 small guns so do i just work my way to tech 2 mediums and take ruptures out to rat? Or do i go assault frigs and build up those core skills (eng at 4 and electronics at 4 currently). To get to tech 2 medium guns im 21 days away. Assault frigs im 22 days away. Keep in mind i want to rat so i can pvp with lots of isk.

Try Rifters first. A good rifter will be able to rat in lowsec easily, and losing one won't break the bank. Certainly work on the support skills like engineering and electronics, they will help you in every ship you fly.
After that, you could go up to Ruptures if you're still worried about the bank or go assault frigs if you have a bit of cash to spend. -------------------------------------------------

low sec ratting is crap, if you are doing well with lv4 stick to that you will get much more money.
and before thinking to pvp with lot of money buy youself alot of T1 frig and go learn with them

This. Low-sec ratting isn't terribly profitable. You're better off doing a couple lvl 4s, then turning that cash into something for pvp.

It is true. On the other hand, it is fun and different. Every 5-6 months I get so sick of running missions that I want to hurl. Getting to low sec is a nice break in the routine.

If you really want to experience low sec ratting, then get a thrasher and load it up with cheap T1 gear, with an AB.
If ya get in close, it can take out rat BSs easily enough.

This was my biggest mistake in thinking that I needed better mods (T2) and more skills to pvp. The ONLY way to learn pvp is to fit T1 mods and get out there and do it. Fitting best named/T2 mods while a noob pvp'er is simply a complete waste, every time. Just fit T1 stuff and learn wtf you're doing.

Edited by: Valea Silpha on 05/07/2010 13:19:57 All the advice about starting in t1 is the absolute gospel truth.
When anyone embarks upon a pvp career, they ALWAYS die a large amount, because the only mistakes you learn from are the ones that kill you in this game. Also, you can learn ALL the fundamentals of pvp in a t1 frig... Manual piloting, range control, cap management and when to fit a scrambler/disruptor. Learning in something paper thin will give you the right mind set about fighting, because it fosters caution and only fighting in what you can afford to loose. Over confidence is the main cause of comedy losses (see badger vs dramiel).
Outside of that, I suggest you get into a corp with a veteran and active pvp wing. That way you can participate in pvp under the wing and watchful eye of people who can tell you WHY you died. Also, when in a fleet, you can tag along with their pvping, and as long as you listen carefully you'll learn a lot. It also lets you contribute something to a fleet (tackling for example) without necessarily having all the pressure on you. It'll ease you in, and soon enough you'll be confident in your abilities. Also, coming up through the ***** hole (as the royal navy used to say) buys you some credibility with your FCs. Being a team player (holding a tackle even when it kills you) and willing to take criticism will bond you closer with your squad mates and that seriously is what makes the game what it is.
Personally, I'd say if you want to get into Pvp in a reasonably serious way, I'd suggest you go for Interceptors first off, and then into T2 fitted BCs. If you have both of those, you can be pretty damn useful, and then people will be happy to teach you how to use them properly.
Stick to missions as your isk maker for now. You can't get much better while you are an empire dweller. If you get into a 0.0 alliance (not hugely likely on your SP, but at a later date...) then you can make better money on anoms and plexes, but until then, stick with level 4s. Good solid money, and just don't fly anything pricey just yet. And keep grinding at those SPs. ATM it seems like forever away, but speccing out one race at a time is the way forward. Inties, then HAC/BC, then BS, then start over with a new race. Takes a long time, but every single second of it makes you a better PvPer.
TL:DR... Knowing you know nothing is the right place to start. You;ll learn the hard way same as everyone, but stick at it.

Edited by: Elton Murrow on 05/07/2010 19:42:21 Agree with the starting small and i'd also reccomend learning to use a cloaking device (no, that doesn't mean you need to train cov-ops) because that's vital for keeping yourself alive and supplied when you're in over your head (ie. when the mercs come knocking because you popped the wrong industrialist with deep pockets or when a neighboring pirates come to push you out of 'their' system).

If your already doing lvl 4's, why gimp your self and fit T1 mods when you can fit T2? Fitting a cruiser with T2 mods for pvp ain't that much more expensive than fitting T1/named, and it enhances your abilities quite a bit. |

If you're BRAND NEW to PvP, being in a ship w/ T2 versus T1 isn't going to make it or break it out there. At least this way when everything goes pear-shaped you'll lose a lot less ISK.
Of course, if you're rolling in billions of ISK I suppose it doesn't matter either way...
