Yes, I want.
I know the range between me and object A. I know the range between me and object B. I cannot figure out the range between object A and B (due to no angle data and a missing function).

Possible? Anyhow?

I-¦ve no idea if this helps you (i m at work so i can-¦t spend to much time on it right now). Also i may use the wrong mathematical words due to translation.
NOTE:
I think a XY-System is good enough due to asuming that the x-axis is part of the plate.
You also know:
Your ship is the origin. The level (plain? i-¦ll call this "plate" for lolz) everything refers to is the circle of your combat-view (showing you the ranges). Let-¦s say object A is the left corner. so you know that |OA| = 36 (lenghts of that vector). Same for B.
About the point on the plate below A (let-¦s call it U). A goes perpendiculary down to the plate. so the point on the plate got a Y-coordinate = 0 and beween OU and UA is a 90-¦ angle.
O (0 / 0) U (U1 / 0) A (A1 / A2) |OA| = 36 also you know: OU-¦ + UA -¦ = 36
Well, this is most likely a whole lot of bull****. it-¦s quite some time ago since i had to solve such problems. |

Now do that, in your head, while trying to figure out if that wreck up there is more than 150km from that wreck over there so you can tackle that dude 115km off you.
before he warps out.

OP didn-¦t ask for a quick solution :P

No. I am talking about figuring out ranges between two points on grid.
You cannot figure it out atm. You might know 2 ranges (between you C and point A and between you C and point B), but you are missing the angle to figure out the range between points A and B.
There are several use cases that come to my mind. I.e. you are FC (cloaked and off of your fleet) and want to figure out the range between your fleet and a hostile fleet or a pos etc.
I think it would be nice to have a function in the tactical overlay or at least the data of angles to figure it out. |

You can, it-¦s just inconvinient. I think you got all information to calcualte A and B. After you did this you can calculate the lenghts of the Vector AB, which is perfectly the range between them. |

I'm not asking for a method to "estimate".
I am asking for an overlay function. Alternatively I am asking for angle data.
To calculate you need at least 3 parameters. Currently you only have 2. |

Scanning already does exactly this. Each probe returns only the (possibly inaccurate) distance to the signature, and the interface gives you an estimated position from that. This is why it shows a ring if only two probes hit, or a sphere for one.
Presumably the probes can't get directional readings because they are scanning through hyperspace (hence recieving a signature faster than the speed of light) |

@ Rordan:
It-¦s not working like this (sadly).
But this would be a way to fix the issue without f**** up overlay with angle data.
Quote:To calculate you need at least 3 parameters (ranges and / or angles). Currently you only have 2.
You are able to calculate the coordinates of A and B (not direct maybe, but still you-¦re able to). Just needs more than filling up a formula with values 1 time. |

People did this before scanner probes come into TQ. |

Simple fix: allow the player to refocus the tactical overlay, or add a secondary color-coded overlay if they view something besides their own ship. Want to know if those wrecks are 150 km apart? look at one, toggle the overlay (if necessary) and get a range on the other one.
Can't look at something because it's more than 100 km away? Get closer. That's a deliberate game mechanic and I don't see a reason to change it. The Skunkworks is recruiting. -áhttps://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=1540711#post1540711 |
