You'll pretty much just get the kiddies trolling the forums and the "adults" (read as people that actually own stuff and have real jobs) not participating b/c of the potential damage that could be caused to their lives.
In essence Blizzard is going to make their forums more of a troll-wasteland than it already is.

I don't see why. If I act like a gigantic tool in real life, I run the risk of getting harassed and/or getting my face kicked in. That doesn't stop me going outside, it stops me being a tool.
And in real life I can defend myself against such acts of retaliation. On the internet not so much, and as Barakkus mentioned above, on the internet people are much more willing to be a tool because they know that their level of accountablility is so much lower then in the real world and will therfore mess with innocent people just for the shetsngiggles.

It's much much more difficult to track down someone who is harassing you if they know what they're doing too, especially when law enforcement doesn't give a ****, or at least won't do anything until something serious happens.

Oh this is grand!
I have been following the 8000 post strong thread on the WoW forum for lulz.
It seems that a Blizzard CM has already revealed his name to the general WoW public as an act of good faith.
Within minutes, the community has looked up his phone number, his age, his address, his parents names, phone numbers and addresses, and have posted them in the thread.
They are now bashing him for living with his mother at 28.

Perhaps that might get him to re-think his "strategy" for cleaning up the forums lolol.
Hopefully he starts getting phone calls at 2am.

It took awhile - and it cost some pocket change - but seriously - if people know what they are doing there is nowhere on earth you can hide without constantly altering the little information you use to interact, and constantly relocating where you live.
And this guy speaks the truth. It's not very hard either if you have a friend/relative etc working for a governmental agency or a telco. It's equally as trivial to steal someone's identity if you know what you're doing.

Perfect solution fallacy. I wish I could remember the name of the counter argument but it's something along the lines of: if you make something difficult enough, it becomes impractical so as to remove a large portion of the problem to the point that the remaining amounts are manageable.

"A subcategory of False Dichotomy, the Perfect Solution Fallacy is arguing that a course of action is no good because it isn't perfect. This essentially assumes the opposite of the Golden Mean Fallacy (see below); rather than assuming the extremes cannot exist and the middle is correct, it assumes the middle cannot exist and a solution is either absolutely perfect or entirely without worth. This is then used to argue that the hypothetical perfect solution must be used, or that a solution is useless because some part of the problem will remain after it has been implemented. "

Sorry if I was unclear. I meant that arguing that with enough time and effort someones personal info was fully available and therefor giving more info isn't a big deal is essentially the perfect solution fallacy. I then was trying to phrase the argument against that because I favor maintaining privacy.

It's fantastic, the ******s will be punished for being ******s and perhaps mend their ways. The *******s, like me, are less likely to be targeted. Lets face it, all you internet nerds don't have the balls to **** with my RL, and being an ******* isn't enough to attract the attention of the cool people over at Anonymous. I think that this could fit this: "Those who sacrifice freedom for temporary security doesn't deserve both".
Or better said, those sacrificing Privacy to make a more pleasant forum experience do not deserve both :P

I don't want to sound like an *******, but this particular example is egregious.
Deserve neither is the correct ending to both sentences, sounds better.

You're missing the point, it's not necessarily what you might say that will make you a target, it's the availability of the information is enough to make you a target.
There are plenty of instances where people are targeted for harassment just because they put their personal info out there for ****s and giggles. You could post something completely innocuous and get targeted just because it's funny...look at all the tear extraction that goes on in this game, there are plenty of people that would love the chance to take it to r/l just because it amuses them.
Not all gamers are like that, but there are plenty that would do that.
I had an instance where somehow an ex from almost 20 years ago and her husband decided it would be awesome to harass me and got my phone number, which I'm still trying to figure out how it happend since I hadn't used that home number for ANYTHING, and I mean absolutely ANYTHING, no one knew it, not relatives, no one, it was even unlisted. I'm not even sure it was them, but the fact that the number they called from was in Florida, and I tracked her down to about the same vicinity that the exchange the number is from. There are some other people that I could see doing it, but none of them are/were in Florida at the time. What boggles my mind is the fact they went through the trouble of finding me to begin with, I hadn't talked to the crazy ***** in almost 10 years...then again it could have been some random person from EverQuest II that decided it would be funny to harass a SOE forum moderator too...but highly unlikely since my real name hadn't been exposed, just my in game characters...still there's all kinds of ways to track down people if you REALLY want to and only have their real name.
In that WoW thread, there's a few school teachers that posted, you KNOW if they were found out they'd be targeted immediately by the kids at their school.
There will be many tears once this is implemented, I guarentee it.

I have nothing to hide and in Denmark, you can't fake an identity like in e.g the US.
If the forum rules permitted it, I would glady post my name and address. (Have done so a some danish forums, nothing ever happened, despite previously threats about bodily harm to me...and my muh-hammed cartoon) But since you started with an ad honinem, let me return the favour:

They should honestly modify it though, instead of making it an all-encompassing policy, make it the equivalent of the punishment that would happen if you walked up to someone and started telling him what a ***got he is IRL.
If you do it IRL you get punched in the face, if you ****poast your name is revealed to all, if you ****poast some more, your address, if you ****post moar after that, your phone number.

Ah, resorting to NTHNTF "argument" An axiom for the ignorant.
Consider, for example, being a woman, now potentially harassed by any creeper who heard your voice on vent/TS and looked you up on the forums.
The bottom line is that people play video games to relax, and escape briefly (or not so briefly) from the stresses of everyday life. The majority of those people would rather do so anonymously, and the majority of them have nothing to hide.
