Does anyone have much success using drones as temporary meat shields for gate or station guns? I know they won't last more than a volley or two but is that enough damage off my ship to make it worthwhile? I'd use t1 warriors so the ISK lost isn't an issue. |

I have no clue about gate guns. However, during a mission... well...
My friend was flying a Drake. He was using Hob 2s, and I was in a Raven, using Medium Shield rep drones on him. I was a little let getting into the mission and he had to run before my drones could help him.
He ran, but left his Hobs behind. I was able to lock one of the hobs and send my shield rep drones to repair it before the AI could pop that drone.
For the rest of the mission, that Hob took all the aggro. I've never seen a better meat shield. My drones kept repping it's shield and it just took the damage happily while I killed everything with my Raven.
The funny part... this was the bonus room in the level 4 version of Angel's Extravaganza.
So my guess... if you can get the gate guns to target the drone, it can take just a little heat off you before it pops.

gate guns cycle aggro at regular intervals. It will work for a few seconds before they retarget ---------- Who, me? |

Edit: Stupid timer... it causes nothing but havoc, I forget about a post I wrote then come back and remember it, then post it and then QQ moar. I'm special. -Jin Nib Trading on behalf of Opera Noir since: 2009.03.02 03:53:00

I'm aware the gate guns cycle. What I don't know is if they have a lock time to wait out (since locking drones would take a while). I thought that even if it only saved my ship a few volleys that could mean the difference between life and death. |

I don't stock t1 drones for such a purpose but if push comes to shove, I have suicided t2's and saved my ship as a result. They won't pull sentries off for long, lights have a lifespan of around 5 seconds (1 sec per drone really). T2 hammerheads take about 2 seconds to go down so they last around 10 seconds. Obviously you don't want to make a habit of this, but it can turn the tide in a very close fight.
Thus far you shall read, but no further; for this is my sig. |

So allow me to dispense of my knowledge
For starters, try as hard as you can to never have gate guns *against* you. Make them shoot you, or only kill pirates. Going -10 is a decision I find myself regretting every couple of days (when my Thorax gets killed by a Harpy for example, or when my friend's sniping Tempest got pointed on a gate by a Dramiel, and died horribly and slowly to gate guns).
On the other hand, losing all that sec was a lot of fun
But, you can certainly use drones to tank gate guns. I have a Nano-Shield-Myrmidon that fields 6 Heavy Neutron Blaster IIs, so I just launch drones and keep them out as gate guns kill them to keep heat off of me. As a corp, we have seen times when we'll all aggro GCC with drones in the air, and not one of us will ever get hit by sentry guns - 5 pilots + 25 drones = rarely shooting the pirates.
I would suggest using T1 drones unless you have the ISK to spare. Any time I *plan* on engaging on a station I bring T1 drones. The rest of the time, though, I fly with T2s and hope not to lose too many.
tl;dr: Yes, you can do it. Not a wonderful tactic, but it can buy you precious seconds.
Edit: to answer your question about lock-on times; I have noticed that they do have a lock on time, but in my Taranis with my MWD off, I still wasn't able to warp off after killing a pod before getting a volley from the gate guns. Take your light drones, turn their MWDs on, and they get cycled through pretty quickly.
