Edited by: Edam Galum on 10/07/2010 21:58:29 I know this has been covered like a bazillion times before... but still... worth having another debate over imho.
First off, I want to warn you all and say that I really dislike having local as a "mandatory" channel in eve. It's used as a intel-tool and it is "unrealistic" in that manner, IMHO.
This is my proposal: Remove local, this will also reduce lag slightly. Instead make Region-chat mandatory or eq. First off, this will solve the age-old problem of cloakers "harassing" other players by being afk. in local 23/7. Second of all, this will make low-population regions more social.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is how I suggest CCP do it:
Instead of... Changed channel to Jita local. [23:43:21] Edam Galum : text goes here....
...I would change it to...
Edam Galum has entered The Forge. <- Region name goes here, join/leave announcements optional. [23:43:21] [Jita] Edam Galum : text goes here...
And make it so that your system-specific location information is not made available until you say something in Region chat.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This would solve the problem of cloakers in local, local being used as an intel tool for detecting large incoming fleets and pirating/anti-pirating. IN MY HONEST OPINION. Now... flame on ;)

This is a good idea, just keep highsec local the way it is so that everyone in the Forge outside of Jita doesn't see fake Raven Navy Issues being spammed every other second.

I agree; removal of local and replacement with either regional or constellation chat (as regional may be too crowded) would be great. For one thing, it's always a bother moving one or two systems for a mission and having to leave any decent conversations that had been started. I don't think it would be a difficult idea to implement, so I'm fully with you on this one.

Slimy Worm : Ah, I hadn't thought about that. But no matter, how about if you where able to "block" out certain systems etc? Via a drop-down list or similar.
Example: The Forge: ... Kimotoro:
- Jita [Blocked]
- Kisogo [Enabled]
- Maurasi [Enabled]
- New Caldari [Enabled]
- Niyabainen [Enabled]
- Perimeter [Enabled]
- Urlen [Enabled]
...
Also, although Jita and other busy trade-hubs are sort of "special cases" I don't see why not one could make a Jita channel, or eq.
Besides, having regional chat would improve the selling power of trade-hubs considerably. And also potentially redistribute them across more space, instead of having 1200 people and about 2000 in nearby systems. It would all be one huge trade-region.

My only worry would be player numbers for certain regions - such as The Forge, where chat would likely be spanning so fast it would be extremely hard to keep track of anything. But yeh, it always feels like there's only a handful of players who spend the time reading other people's ideas, with everybody else feeling the need to just post their own "I want to be able to have everything at the same time" threads. I've started moving to regional to see how it might work out; generally it's not bad right now, but because it's not the default there's really only a handful of players online at one time.

Why not only remove player names and icons in local chat? once you say something in local your picture apears, just like in WH space. problem solved

This idea doesn't seem refined to me. To be honest, I'd prefer it if CCP brought something with Incarna in a sense that getting offline and engaging in some form of criminal behaviour to fake your death or such or drop off the grid for an x amount of time... either by identity theft or the like, doesn't matter. But the affect should remain that you no longer appear in local unless you speak.

I think the OP had some good points. I really hate that if you cov cyno with black ops and cov ops fleet. Which should be absolutely undetecable.. everyone sees the local spike and runs away before you can strike. Thats really stupid. I'd go for having WH local everywhere, maybe then more ppl would learn what D-scan is for.
Maybe they could add a gate fire detection messege that could be enabled. So you'd be notified that someone came into the system but now know who.
