Hi!
I have been discussing this with some friends and it seems that our fears are true.
We did follow some production alts for month and 81% of them did stay online 23/7. They log in straight after server goes up and stay online untill server is closed due daily DT.
For example in module invention and building the modules, there is tons of tasks wich needs to be completed. People seem to use macros quite widely.
Our conclusion is that CCP still is losing the fight against macros.
Maybe the problem is the GUI, I don't know, I just hate to see this happening.
Same thing applies on 0.01 war on trading.
Or is there even chance to win the war against macros?

This doesn't necessarily make them macros, you know... for some of us downtime is peak evening period, and they may just not bother to log off overnight.
I think "they're online all the time" is rather thin justification for declaring a character to be macro-using.

Why would anyone leave their PC on while not actually using it?

I'm curious where the 81% came from, did you stalk these people and so spend 23/7 online yourself?
Other than that I can confirm that 92% of all manufacturing/Invention and selling is done by evil macro overlords. It's pointless to even try building anything these days, especially in minmatar space. Just save yourself the bother (unless you're selling under cost).

So you don't realise that you would use less electricity by just recharging the iPod without the PC?
Seems that angry macro users woke up.

personally my PC is on 24/7 sometimes eve is on 23/7( if i get war decced i log on an stay all day to annoy them)
that being said i have utorrent running , plus i run a media server i also use my pc to charge my
cellphone sons Nintendo ds wifes ipod headset and my little think geek usb missile launcher
I would like to point out that about 40 % of the power my home uses comes from a solar array. So i dont feel as guilty leaving my pc on all the time.

Lollerskates?
PI would be as easy as pie to macro, as long as the planet spins into the same position every time (my solution would be to have it spin differently every time).

i'm somewhat sceptical. How do you know they actually macro the invention and production part as you can't actually see and confirm that?

I leave my laptop running and my desktop running 24/7. Desktop since it runs as a file server for the network, and used to be a web server for a couple small websites I was running, my laptop because I like to wake up and just hop right on it without waiting for it to start. That said, I don't normally leave Eve running all the time, but I've been known to do it :) - "Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in SightblinderĘs eye on the Last Day." - Robert Jordan |

For about the past 10 years my computer(s) have ran 24/7. Only being shut down for upgrades, power outages, or moving around the room.
No waiting for some lame bull**** startup. Move the mouse and you can do anything you want within a second.

It's intriguing that you went right there as your first thought. Very intriguing indeed...
But no, I'm not that kind of a girl. The main reason I leave my computer turned on all night is that I use it to play sounds that help me sleep. I'm a chronic insomniac.
That, and it's nice to have it there all ready to go when I wake up.
And of course, there's my macro-science-alting. Because I really need a macro to set up research jobs - after all, if I did it myself, it would take me up to ten minutes a week.
Which is the other reason I'm bemused by your assertion - why would someone macro science alts?

could just like staying logged in...maybe afk'ing a long freighter haul. Know a few freighter pilots who push the envelope and set up long hauls and disappear for hours. Loads not worht much...just bulky.
On a tired night and alt tabbing alot, been known to leave a client logged as I slept, wnet to work, came back home and go ohhh, whoops.
And are you doing the add to contacts trick and then watching every second of every day for a month in shifts to see the window pop up with a contact log in and the log offs? Maybe you could have missed a log going to the bathroom, talking to a friend on the phone, etc. Protip: do this in real life when you have a potential romantic interest and you will creep them out. And you will probably be arrested aat some point

Derailing here a bit but you are obviously not an engineer. In marketing? Anyway, imma teach you some maths. Solar power does not work at night. In fact, it works very poorly a part of the day and about half the day not at all. This means that ALL of the time your computer is on and you are sleeping, it does NOT use solar power. It means leaving it on is exactly as environmentally bad as the guys not using solar.

Clearly you have newer heard that energy those solar panels capture can be stored and used later when sun is not shining. Or coverted to some other form of energy, for example hydrogen that is easy to store and then return back to electricity by simple fuel cell.

Well, it's the same behavior with mission macros and miner macros and tradebots.
If the character logs in straight after server goes up and always stays on untill it's closed, for 30 or more days straight... There is something wrong.
Also, all of these are well known alts to their main characters, some are part of 'MD elite'. And the corporations are well known alt corporations to build stuff.

Most people I know do.
Mac users can their mail, .ME and Time Machine syncs done when it does not impact them.
I think it is even more obligatory for Windows users: I don't want a virus update, virus scan, Windows update etc to happen when it can annoy me and I REALLY don't want a virus scan/windows update while I am in a game. Back when I had the misfortune to use Lotus Notes, the sync happened every 90 minutes.
In addition to bots, which do exist, some people stay on EVE for griefing purposes (wardecs or those evil AFK Cloakers)
The disheartening thing for me is the markets. There are things that seem to me simple and straightforward to address the 0.01 bots, and CCP does not do it. Although knowing MMO market players, I guess a lot of those are actual rule following humans who need help. ( Note: when I monitor an item it is dedicated gameplay.

Except that batteries were invented a long time before solar power.......and believe it or not, I run the lights in several rooms of my house entirely on solar power. Guess when peak usage for light isn't.....well it isn't during the day when the sun is shining.
Count Volta (the voltaic pile - precursor to modern batteries) and Plante (wet storage cell) probably had no idea that their inventions would be developed into today's solar systems.
Back to Macros: Why do people spend so much time trying to uncover macros. It's not something you can prove anyway, so it's a giant waste of time. CCP have the tools, reports are that they ban 1,000 accounts a month on average.
It's most likely the same few macroers that come back month after month, re-activating their accounts and getting banned again. (come to think of it, CCP are probably making more out of banning them and forcing them to reactivate, than they would by letting them go) ______________________ Agony Unleashed Home of the PvP University |

i don't have eve running 23/7 but i do run my pc 24/7 as i run boinc plus it also saves me the long shut down / boot up i seem to get with vista ultimate 64bit, i also believe some people use there pcs to do folding which is along the same thing as boinc.
must admit i sometimes wonder why i do when you factor in the extra cost of electricity i end up using just to run things like seti@home :/

The best way to find a macro is to convo them, can flip their goods, run RR or energy transfer and see if they agress. Sitting in station writing down all the peeps whos on local and when they got on is not a effective way of finding a macro.
