Instead of the weekly who's the best pirate corp, I thought i'd ask which corps are actually pirating and where? (hi-sec/0.0 doesn't count here)

Just out of curiosity why Aurohunen and Passari? I used to roam there looking for things to blow up, curious why you like those 2.

Same little pipe as Mara. Less busy. Got stations unlike Mara.
I've found Aurohunen to be hard to get a fight in. Mara is more reliable.

heh, I started (tried at least) pirating in passari, bout 4 years ago. Angel Deep used to run that area and really tore us a new one. :p I moved on to dudreda, few jumps off hek, which was quite active til ginger came along and dried up that well.

Yeah, I have been in dudreda for a few months, the little cluster is pretty quiet.
Been roaming between Evati and Dal, and if I am ever feeling reealy bored, can just jump into Amamake. Close to Rens too=) Space is fun! |

To be honest I haven't been up in Auro/Pass/Mara much recently but a year or two ago it was pretty swell. Plenty of targets both roaming around and coming through the highsec gates. Plenty of newbs who had no idea what they're doing along with plenty of coordinated PvP'ers who knew exactly what they were doing. Probably the most fun I ever had in Eve was living in that little pocket.

Does it count as pirating when you sneak into 0.0, cause macros to dock up, hit sites till the hold fills, and then sneak back to high sec?
I have not fired a shot at another player in over a year yet I get plenty of tears anyway.

I've recently started to pirate the Science and Industry forums.. However, just like in game, they dock up as soon as they see someone coming.

It's sorta like pirating. Who do I think I am anyway, not joining a corp, becoming an alliance pet or renter, but gaining the benefits of 0.0 space? How dare I not go through the gank pipelines and pay my fare share to other players by providing them modules and killmails. How dare I use the very tips provided in C&P regarding the use of scanners, the map statistics, alignment, and tactics to avoid getting popped?
yarr?
i've always considered real pirates, those who go -10.0, and profit purely from loot/ransoms. The rest (including myself), I class as griefers. :p When I kill people, unless there's faction/ds/officer loot, I just let the guy come back to reclaim it.

I suspect that the height of piracy was back in 2006. Then it was possible for new players to run missions in low sec with little risk (for what are they worth?) and ransoming, according to the old school, was an honored profession bordering on protection rackets.
The "what is a pirate" question rears it's ugly head yet again. I know I am not a pirate, but the way some people act about the concept of joining a corp and living in 0.0, it makes what I do in exploration feel like piracy.
Ninja salvaging is another one.
There is a free wrecks channel that runs counter to the concepts of the more hard-core ninjas. There is a thread about this. It is said that it's a profession, yet on their blogs and corp websites they relish in tears. I have ninja-salvaged in a manner that never brought tears: I book mark the room, wait for the mission runner to leave to get a salvage ship, and hit the site hard. How many have come back to their bookmarked mission rooms to find nothing and left wondering about wreck despawn timers? I lost count. So what is a Ninja salvager then? In the field we say "Never be seen in camouflage". It defeats the purpose of wearing it. Does a real ninja in black barge into your house, point a sword at you, and start eating your dinner or do you actually see him coming after you?
Perhaps the term "pirate" needs to be discarded entirely. It is not used properly. To some, this game is like a FPS and the clone vat a respawn point. There is nothing wrong with this pure PVP mentality with there being no dictate as to "what" you log in for. But these are not "acting" like pirates. They end up in low sec because of security status and called pirates anyway. Much of the difference in how the game is played is like bouncing a basketball and someone comes up and hits it with a bat, and that person gets run through with a sword, and the person with the sword gets tackled by an offensive line.
It's kind of like "Calvin Ball in space". And there is nothing wrong with that until someone complains about it. And when someone does, out come the people to whom this game is all about getting someone to complain about something. Hence the pirates not acting like real pirates, ninjas not acting like real ninjas.
For me, the best sport is in watching people learn that they are not entitled to anything. We have an epidemic, in the US especially, of people who grew up always being praised for nothing, always being told they are entitled to things without reason, and always being told they are special. When they come into this game thinking of things being a certain way with a total lack of the idea that they could be wrong, and then, when the consequences of that action come, they resist it, it is fun to watch. People like that have but one role in the real world: they provide a supply of bones to step over when things go horribly wrong in the world.

Why does it need to be discarded? A word is just that, a word. We have taken it and given it our own meaning within the context of Eve-Online and to me it simply describes a PvP centric player who lives and operates in lowsec with a negative security status.
More traditional pirates are those that actual make their living off of ransoming and have an honorable code. Some of those do still exist (Hi Tuskers and Bastards) but for the most part, "Piracy" in Eve is just blinky lowsec PvP.

Used to pirate in the Mara pocket as well, popular place for everyone, it's where i learnt how to shoot other people and been doing all around eve since. Mostly in low sec. I pirate just about any where. These days it's hard to find targets in belts, or atleast for someone with a blinky red sec status, so i often go on all day roams right around eve's low sec. --------------==============================-------------- Forgiveness is between you and god, im just here to arrange the meeting.

oh gawd here we go with the droning wtf is pirate diatribes I feel the textwalls coming on now all we need is more how to fix losec to perfect this thread
oh guess wat NONE OF YOU IS PIRATES. Let me elaborate.
New Century Dictionary of the English Language- D. Appleton-Century Co., N.Y., London, 1927
Piracy- n.; from the Latin piratia One who robs by sea, or by descent from the sea on the coast; one habitually engaged in such robbery; a sea-robber, buccaneer, freebooter, or corsair; a vessel employed by sea-robbers, in general, any person or animal that acts like a sea-robber.... (edited for brevity many more ridiculous synonyms for sea-robber follow)
There. Unless your dumb enough to argue with the dictionary, none of you is pirates. I don't see any oceans, wooden ships, parrots or other piratia related paraphenelia flying around internet outer space.

Posting to say Herzog's post was extraordinarily eloquent and worth reading and digesting. I don't consider myself a pirate but I prey on anyone I can catch in low sec. Usually (and I hope) they are there for pvp too, but if it's a foolish pve fit pilot then so be it.
I rarely ransom but nonetheless I am preying.

Hey spectre, thanks heaps for the systems. I've been trying to get the hang of lowsec for a while, and always sadly end up in really empty systems.
So far, systems around Amamake (Siseide), Huola, systems around Resbroko have been quite fruitful in my ventures.
