Hey there, I'm sure people who love internet spaceships would love spaceships RTSs,
So... anyone played SC2 in beta? I never got the chance, just got around to 'opting in' and obviously, with servers going down in a few days or whatever is going on there, they aren't going to get around to sending me an invite.
Anyways... I'm just curious about what was thought about it. My preference would be from people who loved SC1, as that would most closely match my personal preferences, and give the best frame of reference.
I just want to know if you guys think it's worth the price... college kid here, money's tight, and I'm not sure if I can justify $60 for a new game, even one in a series as beloved as Starcraft.

Dunno, honestly. I enjoy playing it in the beta as much as I enjoy the original Starcraft. It does seem to stay true to each race's strengths and weaknesses and themes. It's basically a newer Starcraft with new units or modified units.
How much is $60 worth to you in terms of time? It's a solid game where its strength, as with its predecessor, is in balanced online gameplay (well, as balanced as Blizzard can get it at least). Personally, I might wait until I could get it cheaper, but that'll be awhile yet, considering the companies involved and the target audience.

I've played the original SC, about 12 or so years ago. Twas great fun, remember having player v computer fights on one of the various 'hunter' boards (and when 4x4 was not a fair fight for the players). And the group I hung out with was on a Diablo 1 channel, which was more amusing; That's actually how I ended up buying SC - that group was online when I logged into D1, we talked a bit, and I went to SC instead.
But with this new B-Net thing and the whole RealID debacle, I'm pretty certain I won't go near it. If the single-player campaign does not require any login at all (i.e. you can disconnect the network connection), then maybe. Also, if they decide to package it with Warden or something similar, then no thanks.

I'm sure I'll get it at some stage but not at launch.
It's goddam price gouging and there's plenty of other games to keep me occupied until then.

Let's see, 60 bucks for a game that comes in a episodic form, is region locked, online only and plays pretty much like the first with updated graphics. And the first game is apparently still played.

For $60 you get 1/3 of a campaign and multiplayer game built on old RTS formulas that have been surpassed. It's a rush contest.
No.

I was into buying this game, but after seeing it on youtube, I dont think it will be that much fun. I played a lot of Star Craft 1, and since this game is pretty much the same, I feel ive "been there, done that".
For new players, it may be worth buying though. The decision is yours, not mine. :)

Region locked, no LAN play, the first is just greed and a big f**k you from Blizzard, even with that in mind if it had LAN play I would've bought it, but it doesn't.
Just have to wait until it's cracked and someone finds away, Blizzard have said it's because they want battlenet to be only multiplay available and if there's no LAN they can concentrate their efforts on it, bull**** if you ask me, I think it's about piracy and the irony is people will probably not buy it who would've, like me, but instead hope a pirated version shows up that can be played over a LAN.

Edited by: Winged Crime on 18/07/2010 12:04:25 I just don't know why people would play a game like SC2 when you can play other RTS games that involve real strategy.
Company of Heroes and Dawn of War II are, for starters, massively superior games.
Plus as previously stated, you're getting 1/3 of a campaign experience. And if you only want multiplayer, there's better free games.
Where Blizzard + SC2 win: Amazing out of the box support for both Mac + Win PC platforms, and fantastic mod/map/scenario community and support.
The new map editor allows custom controls and things, i've seen videos of people making top down shooters, platformers, all kinds of nonsense.

Baseless assumptions are awesome. Did you not go see the first Lord of the Rings, claiming you were only getting 1/3 of a movie? Until you've played the entire game, shut your hole, you're talking out of your ass. Also, Dawn of War II was godawful.

Correct. SC2 MP is cheap, cheesy bull****. Out of the hundred games I tracked, I enjoyed maybe 5. Everything else was 6 pools, double gate rushes and tank turtles. I'm not planning on playing it with anyone other than friends.
I'm also a big fan of LAN play, but see no reason to get all sandy vagina over it's exclusion. Maybe if they make playing with friends on Battle.net a huge hassle, I'll start getting ****ed. For now, it doesn't have any disadvantages over LAN play.

Baseless assumptions? Blizzard has told us what we are getting and what their intentions are. (making us buy each campaign separately, we are getting the human one in this first 60 dollar purchase). Do your homework and quit talking out YOUR ass.
Dawn of War II awful? I'm curious what you didn't like about it, but don't really care. It's not the greatest game in the world but it continued/expanded on the new approach to RTS games seen in company of heroes, etc. In the least, it's better than SC / SC2's spam-clicking unit mobbing BS. We're past that, some of the younger kids grew up on SC, have fond memories and so forth, but there have been great advances in the genre.

Quote: How long is each of the campaigns?
StarCraft II's terran campaign will consist of approximately 26 to 30 missions, and each expansion set will include a similar number of missions. This means that the complete StarCraft II Trilogy will include as many as 90 single-player missions. This allows us to create a truly epic story experience with a great variety of unique missions and gameplay types.
How many missions did the original Starcraft have? Oh, right, wasn't it 30 per game?

30 missions total (not counting the expansion), for 10 per race. So in that sense they're keeping the size format about the same, just moving 2 of the 3 races to expansions to give them more time to develop the story of each faction. (and also earn more money, but they're a business, no surprise there).
I have a collectors edition pre-ordered, which I'll be quite happy to pick up on release day.

This still odes not change the _fact_ that you are getting only 1/3 of the whole campaign experience. For someone who plays games for their SP content, like me, this is a huge shaft, to which I respond with a Jolly Roger

No LAN play.
$50 for one third of a game.
If you want to have access to all units in multiplayer, you have to buy all 3 campaigns at $50 each.
RealID.
Dreadful support for modding (go read up on it, it really is).
Activision/Blizzard.
What more reasons do you need to not buy it? If you want StarCraft, you're better off sticking with the old one.
edit: If you want a good SF RTS, i'd suggest Supreme Commander (not 2). While it also builds on an old formula at least it expanded on it.

Source? Because as far as I understand, all units are available from the get-go in MP.

"And of course, Real ID is totally optional. By enabling this, you can set up your Blizzard Entertainment social network, communicate and play games, and best of all, carry your network forward to future Blizzard Entertainment titles."
What exactly do you think Real ID is? And tell me, do you hate Steam, too? Something tells me you do.
Originally by: Reiisha Dreadful support for modding (go read up on it, it really is).
Really? Because the people here seem to think, and I quote,
Quote: Honestly though, Blizzard you have outdone yourself this time.
I have been toying with Galaxy for the past few hours and I think I can safely say that this will change the face of modding. The sheer number of possibilities is astounding. (feel free to quote me on this).
The data editor is intense, in a very good way. Triggers are fantastic (and I haven't even started custom scripting yet). The sheer amount you can do with just the GUI functions is really something to be proud of.
I absolutely love how everything is an object and can be customized, all the way down to the weapons a unit gets.
I forsee "weapon packs" as being a great modding feature (custom created weapons that will then be "equipped" to units).

When you're this utterly wrong, I'm not sure I can take your advice as a valid counterexample. You think I hadn't done all the research into these common claims?

Freinds, partying, 3rd party additions and control over your own tournaments are perfectly valid reasons for having LAN support. Being reliant on a service you have no control over is also not acceptable with some events. Without LAN support SC2 just isn't an option for such situations.

Somehow, I think the new Battle.net system can handle all these things just fine.
And 'friends'? Right, because you can only play with friends on LAN? Spare me.

I wonder how many blizzard marketing alts are in this thread spinning away? It's getting pretty damn deep in here..

I don't understand how LAN play can be dismissed out of hand for battlenet, sure it's there but I often had friends round and we played original SC why should it be different for SC2.
Of course if there's no LAN play then you cant use Hamachi to play against friends who have a different region copy, probably the real reason there's no LAN play, people will have to buy multiple copies.
Lets be honest how much money do they want, WoW is far and away the biggest MMO in terms of money made and subscribers, SC2 would still sell in massive amounts but they just want more, yes it's a business and yes they have to make money but ffs there has to be a limit.
Like I said in a previous post all the other so called moans don't bother me, episodic release and region locking I can live with, hell they could release it with LAN that only worked with other editions of the same region I wouldn't mind but no, greed and only greed has been the motivation behind some of the decisions that are causing people to turn their backs on it.
This isn't even open to doubt, end of.

It's Blizzard, so yeah I'll buy it, they haven't failed me yet. And the whole 1/3rd of a campaig is such bull. It's a full length campaign, you just get to play one race in it. The other races will get their own full campaigns as well. Which is fine by me since I want it for the SP experience anyway and that means I get a ***ping 3 full campaigns at some point.
