I have been grinding standings to get better R&D agents. I have noticed (repeatedly) a small standing loss when trading in an agent for a better one. When I contact an agent I often get the "I have encountered a problem", email, which I ignore. I don't request nor accept R&D agent missions, nor do they seem to appear in my journal. However, I suspect the standing loss is related to the mission connected with that email, and that quitting with an agent marks that mission as failed. At least the standing loss mentions mission failure.
This is not a big problem, but when grinding standing it seems best to build in some margins so your standings don't drop below the standings for the agent you're grinding towards.

There's an issue regarding this. When ending research with an R&D agent, if you haven't accepted and completed the daily mission (or outright declined it), it will act as if you accepted and failed the daily mission. This is likely what you're experiencing. I'd consider it a bug, and I'm sure it's been bug reported before. ---

This is a known issue. If you are concearned about the standings loss, then file a petition. A GM will likely reverse the standings loss.
In future, before cancelling research with an agent, first decline the mission offered by the agent. If you actively decline the mission, you will not suffer a standings loss.

Sigh So, with storyline missions, they show in the journal, and these will go away harmlessly as long as you ignore them. With R&D missions, they don't show up anywhere except in the email, and you need to actively decline them to get rid of them harmlessly (when quitting an agent). Not really consistent...

I was just going to forget about the loss I took when switching, but perhaps by petitioning for a refund of the loss, it'll add a voice to the issue. Learning... |

Ok, just got through with a petition. It is correct there is a sanding loss, and I got a reference to the wiki about being able to decline a mission every 4 hours.
The problem that didn't get addressed was the fact that the dialogs you get when quitting with an r&d agent don't mention a possible standing loss. I'll probably file a bug report when my next toon has grinded standings so I can try out whether declining the daily mission solves the problem. Sigh

In my opinion, it is better to simply do the mission everytime you visit a R&D agent. Then you never have to worry about the standing loss, and get an extra day's worth of RP for the effort.
I carry 25k Tritanium in my blockade runner at all times just in case I decide to visit my agents.

So it can also happen when you just talk to an r&d agent to pick up some r&d databases? Quitting with him is not the only trigger. Hmmm...

No: you only lose standings when you cancel your research without first completing or declining the mission. You will not lose standings if you buy datacores then let the mission offer expire.

Ok, if this is the only case then the dialogs when quitting research might be a bit more explicit about this.
