Edited by: Marko Riva on 20/07/2010 10:53:54 There's a free shard that has been going for years, it runs classic DaoC with old frontiers, no overpowered or "we must be like WOW" expansions. On peak it has about 800-1000 people, it's quite active and admins are running a tight ship. The PVP can be solo, small group or blobbing, it all happens and it's actually very well done.
For the people unaware of DaoC; it's an old (2001 release, but the graphics are updated) PVP/RVR MMO where you actually have to think a bit about what you're doing, grouping happens properly (and encouraged due to the "no buffbots" rule on the server). Classes are interesting, things take some effort and planning so none of that hand holding like in "that other MMO". It's still very good and should have been a template for other MMO's, the choices they made with this one are just very good. The game kinda died out as Mythic did an ~NGE~ kinda sorta but that is not implemented on this server.
Go here for more info, if you have questions or need some help (remember, I haven't played in 5 years so it's all a bit rusty :P) just ask.

You know that practically all free private servers are a con with embedded key loggers so the scammers can get your login info, right?
Um, wakey wakey. It's not only illegal, but a scam. You don't get something for nothing in the world.

Okay....
when you create a new account, to log into their server, don't they have your login info, and isn't that the whole point?
Or am I missing something?
(Interested in trying out classic DAoC, never tried it, but heard old was good)

Old daoc was the best mmo i ever played :) played from day one. i just loved Darkness falls pvp when the dungeon became available for one of the other factions. and you would rush down and kill the mobs to get to the other side so you could kill them. Or that real rvr where your one group could take on about 7-8 groups in a blob when you used the right tactics and your uber RR10+ chars. guess it wasn't so fun for the zerg getting there ass handed to them when they had the number advantage 8 to 1 :P

My point is that once you have a key logger in your PC, it logs ALL your logins and passwords, not just whatever unique login you use for this scammer shard. And hackers who typically host this kind of thing then go after your paying accounts with that information to raid them and sell the in-game gold online....
Well, forget I said anything. I wouldn't think in this day and age that there'd be any MMO gamers left that are ignorant to this kind of thing, but I guess there are. Just don't whine when, next thing you know, your other game accounts are getting hacked (and usually subsequently banned for gold trading). Have fun with that.

, you must have played on some pretty shady private servers, I generally don't recommend playing on the ones that are in Chinese.

I haven't played on any myself, but I know quite a few peeps who have, and not all sleazy servers are in Chinese by far. But most of those illegal, "free" servers harbor similar scams.
Again, you don't often get something for nothing in this world. Are you really that hard up for fifteen bucks a month anyway? If so, then maybe you should get another job and forget gaming until you can legitimately afford it.

Edited by: Marko Riva on 21/07/2010 08:01:42 Normally yes, but if you knew what you're actually talking about (and it seems you don't have a clue) then you'd know that current/live DAoC is crappo due to silly updates no one asked for but got anyway. As said, Mythic did an NGE and tried to be like WOW.
This shard that has been running since 2003 runs OLD DaoC, for a REASON. The reason is that it's a better, more pure game this way. No underlying problems, no hidden agendas. It does get updated with balance changes and everything but it's old Emain, not the #@$32ing stupid New Frontiers. There's no buffbots allowed and PLing is impossible as they changed the code for lvling lowbies when having higher lvls in the group.
In other words; people actually PLAY on this server instead of being PLed to 50 in a day, on their own with 3 lvl 50's. It's better than the live DAoC.

Been playing on Uthgard since 2004 (though much less frequently nowadays), and can assure you I have never gotten any keylogger, especially since you use the retail client and just make it connect to a different IP.
Also they have helpful GMs and almost no custom stuff that would ruin gameplay. They did have custom events which were awesome, though, don't know if there are any aside from 2 custom zones nowadays... Ah, memories... *goes digging through his old screenshots*

While the server you mention may not pose a security risk, there is always that possibility of shadiness in such a thing. Considering that many players use the same login info across multiple MMOs, I'm going to err on the side of caution here.
I'm closing this thread and removing the link in question. *click*
