Hey, I have a reoccuring problem, especially in PVP.
I have an extremely high resolution screen. If I need to run away in a hurry (I hate running but sometimes you gotta..), I get all nervous, my chest pounding and my hands shaking... and I can't click the things I need to click!
How the hell do people click those tiny dropdown boxes and stuff in a hurry?
I wish to death you could hotkey EVERYTHING in this game, it would be so much better than feeling like i'm checking my email in space, but I'll work with whatever I've got. Any tips?

the shaky hands is maybe a lesser concern than the inability to click those AWEFUL dropdowns quickly. Though it certainly adds to the problem.

When trying to warp in a combat situation, never use the dropdowns. Left click a warpable object to select it, then spam the warp button on that selected items menu above the overview. - - - Dian'h Might - C&Ps resident "internet kleptomaniac" |

I know exactly what the OP is going through.
What I do when stuff gets 'though' is more or less center the 'selected items' window on my screen, which is located usually top right. Select on the overview a gate/planet/whatever then mass spam the warp to or jump button, depending on what's needed atm.
It' amazing what a bunch of spaceship internet pixels can do to you mentally. Maybe that's part of its addiction.

they're so tiny and hard to click though :\
tiny little circles for planets or whatever that are easy to miss or don't register a click all the time... and overview is kind of unreliable as it can be filled with other things..
A change in overview settings would probably be the first step in all of this though.

I used to have this problem in another game long ago. A solution that worked for me, and might well work for you, is to die. A lot.
Invest in a dozen or so of the cheapest ships you can find and go out and attack people. Just grab a frigate and a weapon and get crazy. Do this for as long as it takes for you to become bored with it. In this other game, even after getting over my major nerves, I would still begin each day's PvP activities by killing myself. One quick death and I was good to go. Sounds stupid? It worked for me.
As for the time issue, a key thing to keep in mind is that you have a lot more time than you think. Everything seems to be very fast because you are wasting brain computational "cycles" on panic. Once you cure the panic everything will slow down.

1. Fix your overview so you have a tab where all you can see are targets (war targets, outlaws, potential pinatas, etc.).
2. Learn the various ships types, their capabilities, and understand how they match up against whatever ship you are flying at that moment.
3. Holding down the "Ctrl" key and clicking things on your overview makes you target it.
4. Depending on where you place your active modules; F1, Ctrl-F1, and Ctrl-Alt-F1 will make your modules activate.
5. Ctrl-Space will make your ship stop.
These are pretty much all the commands and tricks I know. _______________________

Set up a new tab on your overview and label it GTFO. On this tab change your overview so that it ONLY shows planets.
When in a situation where you need to escape in a hurry, click your new tab, pick a planet in your overview, spam warp to and well..... easy peasy.
I suggest using just planets in this view as planets don't have sentry guns in case you've been up to something you shouldn't have been.

I have the same thing, though with the addition of Sun, Stations, and Gates (the last two can have sentry guns though). Moons are also bad (POS sentry guns).

Just quoting for truth. This is the problem I still have, I need to get killed much more often for some practice. Any offers?

Edited by: whiteshark12 on 24/07/2010 18:18:59 try going to amamake, thats a sort of hub for PvP. warp to the top belt and either die, get lucky and kill something, or wait and someone will warp to you.

Left-clicking an object in space and holding it brings up a circular selection menu, one of the options being "warp to". Much faster than the menus, though you have to swing your camera around and actually click the object.

I have an overview tab which has in it: All planets, all asteroid belts, all stations and all gates, nothing else. If I know I will have to warp my pod or ship out I just switch to that that and depending whether I have a GCC or not will warp to planet/belt/station/gate. From there you can warp to a safe etc.

Edited by: White Ra on 25/07/2010 03:52:43 In every competitive game online- chess etc. this happens its the element of competition and thrill; everyone gets this.
However on what you've said- my reply to that is to try to understand the game mechanics and them work you're way efficiently, understand how the map works and you can travel easy with the map.
There are ways to sort out overview objects so you can correlate better unfortunately this isn't a really quipped game that can let you do hot keys, blast and command like other games and hopefully they put more effort into developing this
Funny how the first poster always posts something useless and fights/get angry when someone notices
This is a different place; get the adaptation and learn how to get your own fun out of it- because it's pretty vast! and that's the good thing
High resolution is best to enjoy the nice space graphics of this game, just get used to pvp and practicing and such there's guides for it too |

I've been playing for a little over a year and I still get shook up sometimes when things go bad, but it isn't as bad as it was at first.
I guess the only suggestion I have is pick the easiest possible thing to do first, like select a planet from a custom overview filter, and use the procedures described above.
I was really proud of myself the other day when a Dramiel got after my Sigil in 0.0. It followed me through three planets, but I could tell it was losing ground. My advantage was that I could select my next destination before I got to the one I was warping to. The Dramiel pilot apparently wasn't a mind reader.
He got 27% of my shields at the first planet, but never hit me again.
Incidents like this will also build your confidence, and sometimes that confidence helps me. Of course, the rest of the time it's over-confidence and gets me killed.

Edited by: Dr Reinhold on 05/08/2010 15:37:18 Yeah, right clicks and drops downs are sluggish and finicky. Better to click an object and then click the warp button. It helps to actually practice it so it will come naturally if you otherwise freeze up. Practicing mouse clicks might sound a bit weird but it really can help. If you don't have to search for buttons then you will be more confident and you can concentrate on suppressing the fear and adrenaline, choosing what you need to do and then letting your hands find the clicks for that choice naturally.
The other thing you might do is lower the resolution or sensitivity on your mouse a bit. That way it wont jump around the screen so fast. Adrenaline makes fine muscle movements difficult. It will take time to get used to though and you will need a bigger mouse mat.
Finally, if it is really a matter of the boxes are so small you could look at lowering your resolution. A drag if you like things to look good but it is a possibility. alternatively, if you can afford it, buy a physically larger monitor with the same resolution to make the boxes bigger. Expensive but possibly the most satisfying solution.

One other thing that can make life easier is to not have your windows right on the edge of the screen.
Drag them in a bit to the snap to distance and you will be able to see the objects in space that aren't in front of your camera around the screen edge. Quite often you will find that there is a collection of them in the corners. In a tight spot just left click in the corner and spam that warp to button.

I keep an overview tab with planets. In emergency situations I can randomly click a planet and hit warp, I'll figure out where to warp next while in warp to that planet.
Very rare tho, as usually im aligned somewhere all the time. + You get used to pvp after a while, so the shaking chest pounding stops :P

All the above but especially this.
You might find Louis's epic overview settings handy, it's got a dedicated travel (read GTFO) tab.
When it comes to PVP I always assume that I will lose my ship and concentrate on killing theirs, this helps to relieve tension.

Just a minor tip, warping to a belt is often better especially if you are fighting something that can warp faster than you. Warping to a planet at 0 just to land next to the 'ceptor that saw you run and came after you sucks ('ceptors warp fast). Have died this way, have killed this way. Learnt to use belts
