hi cat here
i was wondering earlier if eve were open source what would the things be
like obv there is the potential to fork it but then how would we enjoy all the lag that comes with a single sharded thingmy? people could run their own stuff and it would be like macro heaven for sure
but i wonder as well, if the code were open for review, would that mean more or less bugs? i hate bugs, but luckily i have an electric fly zapper lol :D
if i spotted a bug in the code, i could perhaps solve it! but then again, if i spotted a bug in the code, i could perhaps exploit it! lol
ccp run all the databases and stuff and thats coo i suppose id recommend something other than mssql lol but i dont have a bottom line to think of and it dont make no matter if i use a scalable standard as opposed to some propriety lock in lol
anyhoo i digress; if the client were open source and ccp retained the servers, ip, copyright, etc., do you think this would be good or bad for eve?
xx

In most cases I believe it would be bad.
Eve is competitive, it is not Second Life where there is no competition, no strive to get better, no real achievements to work for. Sure open source works for a chatroom, but when it comes to people pushing what they have to gain a tiny advantage, a small exploit or even the order or way something is processed can give people advantage over others, skewing the balance in their favor.
Another reason is, as you mentioned it, other servers. nobody wants to pay 15 bucks a month when free servers exist, as evident in ragnarok, redmoon, and even wow private servers. big enough communities can get this game to work on a smaller scale, say 100-200 systems with all high-low sec
"custom" clients. because if botting is not enough when the bots just click on certain places in the interface or select from a list, complete custom clients can be created like the ccp 'lite' client, where a single computer can run hundreds of clients. eve markets collapse, people lose all will to play when their hard worked ships and investments are suddenly worthless, etc.
tl'dr: the balance of eve is ruined in every sense.

It's never going to happen, but you can hypothesize I guess.
You can be sure of these things: - People would automate everything they can think of, which has many bad side effects such as people getting miffed seeing bots everywhere, and server load increasing dramatically. - People would abuse bugs found in the source. They already do, open source only makes it easier. - People would (more easily) develop their own servers (bad thing). - People would fix/report bugs found in the source.
And I don't want EVE to become a "who can write the best bot" game.

There are two eve private server software out there, one is quite actively being developed, both are open source and at a degree that you can fly around and pew pew using the old Acrophia client.

Bad as in macro city.
A related story: An establish sci-fi game had a bunch of typos in the game manual. The forums said, hey, publish the material ahead of time and we the fans will check for typos. (Many eyes theory.)
The lead writer did release some material for fan review. Guess what happened?
Nothing. None of the fans could be bothered to proof the material. Moral of the story is, unless someone is getting paid, they're most likely not going to find your bugs for you.

It's nice to see the old cat back. The new one, complete with no "hi cat here lol x", and good grammar/spelling was getting old.

If Eve were open source? DIKU/MERC.
It would go just like that, fragment into a thousand forked projects, none of which work properly, none of which have any population to speak of and all of which are broken and exploited to death.
Also pretty much nobody would have the resources, fiscal or material, to run Eve as a single persistent world.
In many ways the fact that things don't happen quickly or with finality in the Eve development process is probably why it has survived for so long.

I think cat means the client, which would just lead to FOK how many bots --

Ahh. My bad. Sorry! Haven't had my coffee yet.
Community designed UI skins/themes/icons etc would be very welcome!
