Specific question on the Diplomacy skill.
As when I'm running missions I work mostly for Gallente - and furthermore as I never ever fly faction missions my standings with the Caldari State is exactly -5.00 (the limit of the derived standing loss)
If I were to train Diplomacy skill to V this would raise my standings iirc to an effective - 2.00 with the Caldari state.
Question - is it worth training Diplomacy to V as in will it allow me to accrue standing with Caldari Corps and access to their better agents?
I believe the break point for faction standings is -2.00 i.e. if your faction standings are above -2.00 you use your corp standings not the faction standings when determining which agents you access, while if your faction standings are below -2.00 faction standings override corp standings when determining which agents you can access, but I am not sure what happens when you have faction standings are exactly -2.00 (which would be the case).

If it's worth it depends entirely on what else you've got to train.
Personally, in your case I'd go with Diplomacy IV, and run level 1 missions for Caldari Navy in Isaziwa (use an Amarr frigate/destroyer with lasers, saves on ammo). You can still use the negative quality level 1 agents. This will probably raise your standing lots faster than training Diplomacy V.

Yeah, you really only need diplomacy to level 5 if you are shoot on site to a faction when you have diplomacy to level 4. I believ that means around a -7 or -8. I know I had to train diplomacy to level 5 so I could join Red Federation as my Gallante standing was horrible!
That said, even with a diplomacy of 5, if your standing is above -8 I believe or -8.5, diplomacy of 5 will not help and you will still be shoot on site.

Thank you for the replies.
I want to clarify a few things -
I am not seeking to raise my standings with the Caldari state - they will remain at exactly -5.0 base (then modified by Diplomacy)
So even if I run missions there I will avoid all storylines.
However for a number of reasons I want to have high standings with some Caldari corporations, partly to access high quality agents.
So would this be possible with effective standings of exactly -2.00 (which is I believe that Diplomacy V would give)?

I'm not sure on this one. I think having a faction standing of exactly -2.00000000000 should give you access to the agents. The only way to get that would be if your unmodified faction standing is at -5.00 because of derived modifications and you have not shot a single enemy ship since getting there. Note that rounding is an issue here; the game only displays 2 decimal places but actually uses unrounded values. It might show -2.00 while you're actually at -2.004.
(Sorry for the late reply)

You always use whatever is highest when talking with an agent, your standing with a corp or your standing with the faction, BUT you need -2.0 or higher faction to talk to agents above level 1 quality 0.
